Announcing the Guardian Slo-Mo Rewatch, coming to a [community profile] sid_guardian near you, starting 5 September. We'll be watching half an episode a week (about twenty minutes) so we can talk and squee about our beloved 镇魂 | Guardian drama.

For those who remember our last rewatch, this time we're aiming for a lighter touch. Posts will be on the minimalist side - a brief summary, one quote, one screencap, maybe one noteworthy detail and some discussion-starter questions.

We're looking forward to some fun discussions as we revisit Haixing, Dixing, and the SID.

Fans of the novel, the drama, or both are very welcome! You don't have to keep up with the rewatch – it's absolutely fine to dip in at any time. We want to hear what you think! Those of us who've just finished the Readalong or are otherwise familiar with the novel are likely to compare and contrast the two canons, but it's 100% okay to focus purely on the drama.

Please consider hosting a post or two, if you're willing and able to! Comment with a date from the schedule below! Posts should ideally be made sometime on the Friday or Saturday, in any time zone.

Starting 9 November, [community profile] sid_guardian is hosting a read-along of the Guardian novel by priest. Each week someone will post a few excerpts to start things off. Feel free to pop in and join the discussion, whether or not you're keeping up with our reading schedule.

Hi, all! *waves* We had a poll back at the start of June about what to do next for our weekly discussions/picspams/etc, and then [personal profile] trobadora and I both got bogged down in Wishlist modding and life stuff. We tried kicking off a Case of the Week series a while ago, but it seems to have fizzled, so we were wondering: where to from here?

One possibility, now that the official novel translation has been published in full, is to have a Guardian novel read-along/book club -- maybe two chapters a week, with a discussion post that just contains a few excerpts. As you've probably noticed, [personal profile] trobadora and I generally lean drama-focused, and we're mostly interested in the novel as the Ur-text, and how it was adapted. But this comm is for all Guardian fans, and we’d love to see more general novel discussion too!

Like we said in June, we both really enjoy and value having discussions, picspams etc. here and just overall revelling in our Guardian love, so we want to keep having regular posts on the comm. Which means it's important to know what you all want more of (and what you'd be willing to sign up to post about).

Please take a minute to think about what you'd like to see on [community profile] sid_guardian, and what you might be willing to post about and/or engage with! It would really help us to know. ♥

Welcome to sign-ups for the Case of the Week Series! In this series, post hosts choose 1) a weekend slot, and 2) a case from the list below (or any other Guardian case we’ve missed, novel or drama). On your chosen weekend, post anything related to the case. Post ideas:
  • silly polls
  • reaction posts
  • speculative discussion starters
  • picspams
  • meaty meta
  • case recaps
  • comparisons between drama and novel versions of cases
  • serious polls
  • fanworks rec lists
  • translation thoughts or questions
  • worldbuilding thoughts
  • anything else you can think of!
We’re not doing this in any particular order, so feel free to pounce on your favourites. And cases can be done more than once, so it’s fine if you want to just focus on one small aspect or scene. (We’ll link posts under the case in the list below.)

All degrees of familiarity with canon are welcome, from first-time watchers/readers to those with an unofficial Diploma in Guardian Studies. Come play with us, and roll around in the sleeve-garter-, tooth-necklace-, and cigarette-or-lollipop-strewn glory that is Guardian.

Want to host a post? Choose a case and claim a date from the slots below.

Note: The case list below is based on the drama only because that’s what we’re familiar with, and we understand the novel doesn’t have cases of the week in the same way. For the cases that do have parallels, you’re very welcome to sign up to post about the novel version, or make a comparison between novel and drama! And if there’s another case or case-like part of the novel you’d like to post about, please feel free to claim it!

Thank you so much to everyone who made posts in round 5! ♥ ♥ ♥ And oodles of thanks to everyone who commented and helped keep the conversation going, too! *\o/*

Here's a list in case you missed any of the posts from round five. Further comments (and poll votes) are always welcome.

Also, thank you so much for all your votes and feedback on the poll about future discussions/picspams/etc. We appreciate your thoughts so much! Unfortunately, [personal profile] trobadora and I haven't had a chance to sit down and talk about what comes next, so in the meantime a) the poll post is still open for votes and comments, and b) we're continuing with the piscpam/discussion series. Please sign up below to post a picspam, a scene discussion, or more general meta -- or a hybrid of all three. :D :D :D
  • Picspams:
    • You can base your picspam around any topic: illustrate a character, a relationship, an arc, a meta theory, a setting – or simply revel in a favourite scene.
    • Add as little or as much commentary as you like. (Minimum is brief alt-text for images.)

  • General meta and scene discussions:
    • You can write about any scene or moment in Guardian (novel or drama), or anything else Guardian-related (novel or drama). Squee and/or analyse and/or ask questions as you prefer.
    • There are no minimums – make your post as long or short as you like!
    • If doing a scene discussion, please check the index to make sure your chosen scene hasn't already been covered.
    • If you want to include screencaps and can't make or find your own, we can help with that. Just let us know!

  • Post anytime in the weekend, Friday to Sunday, according to the schedule below.

  • Come and admire/discuss/flail in the comments.

So, who's in? Comment here to claim a slot or two by saying what kind of post you're thinking of making, and a date. (Or you can claim a date without having yet decided what to post about.)

Hi, everyone! Things seem to be winding down a bit on the picspam/scene discussion front, so [personal profile] china_shop and I have been tossing around alternatives to keep things humming, and we thought we should consult with you all. ♥

Ideas we've had so far:
  • Parallels: a series looking at some of the parallels and resonances between the cases of the week, on the one hand, and the drama's overall themes / Shen Wei's, Zhao Yunlan's, and Ye Zun's journeys on the other. Posts could point out one or more parallel(s), and people could talk about more in comments.

  • Polls: anything from serious questions about canon interpretation to choosing favourites to complete silliness. These could be either proper Dreamwidth polls or makeshift text polls.
Then we wondered about a mix of case discussions and polls, or maybe even one case per month, one poll per month, and some open slots of picspams and scene discussions.

We both really enjoy and value having discussions, picspams etc. here and just overall revelling in our Guardian love, so we definitely want to keep having regular posts on the comm. Which means it's important to know what you all want more of, and what you'd be willing to sign up to post about. (Unfortunately, we can't commit to making all the posts ourselves!)

Please close your eyes and take a minute to think about a) what kinds of posts you'd like to see on [community profile] sid_guardian, and b) what kinds of posts you might be interested in making for this comm. And then let us know! There are no wrong answers! It would really help us to know. ♥

For members, this means some extra perks - most importantly:
  • polls - any member can post a poll to this comm now, even if they themselves don't have a paid account
  • comment search - you can now search not just for posts, but also for comments on this community with Dreamwidth's native search

Please do take advantage of it! :D

As you'll have seen, the Rewatch has just kicked off! YAY! \o/ It's time to watch episode 1, meet the SID and see Zhao Yunlan encounter the beautiful, mysterious Professor Shen for the first time, and then go join in the discussion - or you can just join in the discussion cold, if you prefer! (You can actually join in anytime, but the rewatch will be more fun if we're vaguely in synch.)

Promotion
Please spread the word about the Rewatch - to your friends here on Dreamwidth, and to Guardian fans and potential Guardian fans on other platforms, too. Feel free to use the graphic or not, and here's our post on [community profile] fandomcalendar, if you want to reuse our words. :)

And while we have you here, we're still looking for people to host episodes. Posts can be as short and minimalist as you like. Go here to sign up!

Hey, everyone! Round Eleven of Scene Discussions and Other Meta is wrapping up soon. As well as enjoying the top quality meta and the chance to revel in Guardian for its own sake, we really love having scheduled weekly posts to keep the comm active and feeling lived-in, and to make sure there's Guardian content on our reading pages. We've noticed sign-ups have slowed lately, and we wanted to check in with you all to see if that's just a seasonal thing, or whether, after eleven awesome rounds, people are running out of scenes/meta they're interested in posting about and we should change it up a bit.

Please complete the poll regardless of whether you've hosted a scene discussion, commented, or prefer to lurk. Comment with any additional thoughts, too, or drop us a private message. We'd love to hear what you think. This is a comm for all of us.

We still have slots free in round 10 of our scene discussions/other meta/etc. posts, including the coming weekend. Anyone up for a post?

Besides scene discussions, this is open to meta, squee, rarepair or friendship manifestos, recs, polls, etc. - and as usual, novel or drama or both, as you prefer. (Reminder that you don't have to write a long post! Some of us like to, but there's no minimum. *g*)

Go here to sign up, let's talk about Guardian together!

Our comm subscribers list has just reached 300(!!!), and we want to welcome everyone who's arrived since we last flailed gleefully at you! We're so delighted to see you all here! Guardian is a friendly, active small fandom covered in sparkles and hearts. Please make yourselves at home, say hi on the Welcome Post, consider signing up to meta about a scene (three slots still open in this round), and link to -- or post here directly -- any and all Guardian-and-adjacent-related content (fic and other fanworks announcements, meta, recs, squee, picspams, etc). (Or not, if you prefer to lurk!)

If you're running a Guardian fandom event, feel free to use this comm for that too.

We welcome content related to the drama, the novel, the actors and their other roles, and RPF.

And a note to our more established members: the fandom is at a size where many of us know each other and follow each other's journals, so linking on the comm may feel less necessary. But there are always new people coming in, and it would be great if you could keep linking here so people can find you and your shiny Guardian-related posts!

Thanks to everyone who weighed in on the previous post! We thought there might be concerns, which is why we asked first, and after reading everyone's comments we won't be going forward with this.

Please continue sharing your fic, art, meta, squee, etc. on the comm!

*waves to you all*

Hey, so it turns out that, with a bit of setup, there's a way to automatically crosspost from Dreamwidth to Twitter (much thanks to [personal profile] glymr for this info!), and we're thinking of setting that up for [community profile] sid_guardian, but we wanted to check in with you first. The tweets would just include subject lines and links to new posts on the comm, with some Twitter tags added.

ETA: Thank you all for weighing in! We definitely don't want to make people uncomfortable by crossposting against their wishes, so we won’t be going forward with this.
