Hi, I'm china, one of the co-mods.

I've been in fandom since 2004 and watching Kdramas since 2013, but Guardian is my first Cdrama. naye kept posting about it and in October she linked me to this vid, and I realised that Zhao Yunlan the show was extremely relevant to my interests. I started watching and fell in love.

I'm a ficwriter, iconner, occasional recapper, and even more occasional vidder.

My favourite scene is when we first discover what a trainwreck Zhao Yunlan's apartment is. His fridge, bwahaha! And Shen Wei's furiously exasperated reaction to same. *heart-eyes*

Hee! Guardian was my first cdrama, too. And I still don't quite know how I ended up there.

That is to say, I'd seen people talk about it, but I honestly couldn't say why I decided to actually start watching that day. I only know that once I'd started I couldn't stop, and I mainlined the whole thing in two days.

(I'm supposed to be a writer myself, but still haven't finished my first fic. ARGH!)

Hello comm! What a wonderful idea!

At one point this summer all of my old Nirvana in Fire mutuals on Tumblr were all suddenly screaming about Guardian in a very, very effective sort of way.

The first gifset I saw was incredibly spoilery and made me go "I need to find out what happened to that one guy the other guy was so worried about!" (Oh sweet summer child. Current me can tell past me she's not going to like it.) (It was from episode 39. I mean not to spoil anyone who's wandered in halfway through watching the series, but. Yeah.)

And the post that got me real interested was this flailing by Lazulisong, and then the non-spoilery gifset I saw that made me go oh no I must watch this right now was this one of the taxi scene in episode 8.

Because. Oh. That tenderness...!

So I watched it all and I have rewatched most of it and also read as much of the novel as is translated (without skipping ahead, though, so I guess that's chapter 69 or so now?).

Guardian has sparked my creativity in amazing ways, and I am so grateful for it. ♥ I've made quite a few gif sets on Tumblr (including some with original poetry?? I've never done that before...), and I write a bit of fic. (Including my first explicit m/m!)

I talk a lot about the WIP that ate my life - also known as A Twist of the Kaleidoscope. It's a massive fix-it with extra everything that follows canon up until episode... well, mostly until 29? But then it really veers off in 33. It's tagged as a Nobody Dies/Everybody Lives AU, and also Angst With A Happy Ending. And after 93k words, I am almost there. Almost, but not quite! The first four chapters are up, and this fandom has been so amazingly generous with comments and feedback. <3

Anyway. Yeah, I have it bad. (And by that I mean I am so happy here!) I've got a background in Japanese, so I can puzzle out the meaning of written Chinese, but my comprehension in general is pretty much nil. My wife, however, is a native Mandarin speaker, so I tend to force her to tell me what Zhu Yilong and Bai Yu are saying in their ads and interviews, much to her amusement. (I don't think she'll ever be over Bai Yu's KFC Chicken Taco. ...the chicken is the taco?!)

I first heard about Guardian from the wonderful AvenueX's first video about it, but I didn't start watching until a friend watched the first episode and told me that it had an excellent meet cute. Then I spent the rest of August (and most of the time since, frankly) obsessed with it!

Favourite scene is tough because there are so many to choose from, but I'm a big h/c fan, so I remember first watching the whole stomach ache/taxi/putting to bed/ZYL wakes up the next morning and SW's still there scene with a sort of stunned glee...

Other than our two leads obviously, I'm a big fan of Da Qing! I find him and Zhao Yunlan being beffies super cute, and I love the way they're sort of casually affectionate with each other and also how much Da Qing takes the piss out of him for being obsessed with Shen Wei. I also think Li Wei does a really good job of playing the physicality of a man who's a cat without it ever being cheesy.

I also like Zhu Hong a lot, and wish she could have got a slightly better plot line than being hopelessly in love with ZYL.

Guardian comm – yay!!! :)

I first saw people talking about Guardian on fail_fandomanon. And finally in August I thought “I have nothing new to watch, it’s easily available on youtube, I don’t have to torrent anything, let’s try it.” I liked it from the start and enjoyed the prettiness of the cast very, very much. :) And then came episode 7 and that scene in the beginning with Zhao Yunlan “saving” Shen Wei from the thugs, and I knew I was in love. The fandom is great for me because I love both the big paring Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan and the smaller pairing Chu Shuzi/Guo Changcheng. And Guardian inspired me to write fanfic again, which is such a nice feeling, because I missed it a lot.

It's so cool that we all sort of stumbled into this and then ended up totally obsessed. :D

The whole scene with "saving" Shen Wei is so cute. ZYL is so delighted to be able to show off, and has no idea who he's showing off to, I adore it. :D

I took a while to warm up to Xiao-Guo - the first couple episodes, his scenes came too close to hitting my embarrassment squick - but I adored Lao-Chu and his 100%-done-ness with everything from the start. They end up being surprisingly sweet together. :D

Also, yay for writing fic again, that's great!

I don't remember exactly how I ended up watching Guardian (my memory is going down the drain thanks to never getting a full night's sleep anymore), just that I somehow got it confused with Nirvana in Fire? I was late enough in watching it on Youtube that I only got to ep 16 when it was suddenly taken down for a while. I watched the next few eps without subs (it was okay, I can speak enough Chinese to get by) and then china_shop helped me out ;)
It took me awhile to finish watching and I read the novel alongside it. Because my ebook reader hated the file, finishing the novel took ages (1 minute to turn a page in a 600 page document... *grumble*). I remember being hooked from the start, though. The romance is so incredibly obvious, I thought that something like that would never make it onto a screen in China and in that format. Anyway, it's been the spark that I've been missing and it's rekindled my passion for learning Chinese. I've actually started reading another BL novel in Chinese by now.
It's hard to choose a favorite scene, but I concur that the scenes in Zhao Yunlan's apartment are shipping gold.

I don't remember how I ended up watching it, either! So strange how that happens! It was already down by the time I got to it, but I'd seen the Mega link around. The first five episodes were still available on Youtube, and by the end of those I was hooked, so I immediately tracked down the rest.

Totally envying you for actually speaking Chinese, btw! I started out not knowing a single word, and everything I know now (which isn't much, obviously) I learned from Guardian. *g* I definitely wish I could read all the Chinese fanfic - there's so much of it!

Anyway, it's been the spark that I've been missing and it's rekindled my passion for learning Chinese.

For me, Guardian started out on a whim. Several people mentioned it on my DW friendslist, but I had no real intention of watching it. Still, when I was visiting a friend, I suggested we check it out. And now, I am hooked, she is hooked, several others have also been infected at this point... it's spreading like the flu. ;-)

Thanks to Guardian, I've started writing fanfic again - and it's been years! I really can't tell you how wonderful it is to be writing slash again, even though I do still feel rusty.

I honestly love both Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei. Still, Yunlan does have a slight edge in my heart (even though I find Shen Wei more physically attractive).

Yunlan's just so sharp and insightful and competent. He can hold his own as a human facing inhumanly powerful people - and he's also so open-minded and kind and passionate about protecting *everyone*, not just humans. I also love his flippant, irreverent, cheeky ways, and the streak of recklessness and lack of care for himself, and how none of it can conceal how much he truly *cares*.

And I admire that he became this remarkable person all by himself, without the help of a guiding hand when he was young. He became the amazing person he is despite, not because of his environment.

My Dixingian power would probably be keeping tea warm indefinitely. Or subjectively stopping time while reading a good story.

Oh, wow, now this is totally unexpected -- I popped into fictional_fans while checking out DW (I'm new here, btw!) and ran into Guardian, of all things! I had a brief but intense obsession with Guardian a few months ago while I was looking for material to practice my very limited Chinese on. I loved how much it catered to fanfic tropes despite being "bromance", heh.

I got up to around episode 12, couldn't stand not having someone to talk to about it (the taxi scene! that whole episode! Zhao Yunlan finding out about Shen Wei because the man is so bad at being discreet! :P), and then got the notion to fix ALL the subs so I could watch it with my roommate and squee about it with her. That didn't pan out, of course (updated the subs from eps 6-8, don't know if they were approved). School got in the way and I never did get around to finishing it. I also got spoilered while looking up Zhu Yilong on the wiki. Sigh.

I do intend to read the novel in the original Chinese with a pop-up dictionary, but that's going to take a while... (I tried the English translation on Wattpad, but found it's missing a lot of content and the tone from the original novel!)

Anyway, hi! I'm Vii, avid consumer of fanfic. I write (original stuff, mostly) and draw (sporadically). Maybe this will be an encouragement for me to finish the drama over winter break!

Hi, I'm Solo and rheasilvia brought me here. Seriously, it's all her fault. She made me watch it and I couldn't stop! (So I made two other friends watch it. One of them is working on fic now...)

Guardian hooked me for so many reasons: the cool monsters of the week, the amazing CGI, the wonderful ending... okay, wait, where are my meds?

The romance. I haven't seen anything this obvious since I was in Starsky & Hutch fandom (yes, I am that old). And the way Shen Wei just cannot stop looking at Zhao Yunlan ever (and that LOOK!) and how he is so beautifully fail at pretending to be a normal human (I fell off the roof. I guess... my back twinges a bit?) and how Zhao Yunlan is sharp enough to cut himself and just keeps digging and analysing until he's got Shen Wei figured out... and Zhao Yunlan's irreverence even before he's figured him out... and that whole thing where Shen Wei can flip into Black Cloak mode even while wearing those ridiculous sleeve garters... and so many other things. #coherence

I've been watching Jdramas for years now but this is my first Cdrama ever, and if I'd been told I'd become a fan of one, I'd have laughed. I don't normally like watching stuff in a language where I don't understand at least a little bit but since I speak lots of languages this is not usually a problem. Mandarin... is a problem.

I've been in fandom since 1979, covering Starsky & Hutch, Highlander, Due South, TokyoBabylon/X (also rheasilvia's fault and most recently KAT-TUN/Akame.

I'm so new to this I don't even have an icon yet.

Yeah, ALL the things you mention! But I also do love the cases of the week (Dixingren of the week?), and I'm one of those rare people who actually likes the ending. What can I say, the way they both end up plotting their own demise as a strategy just speaks to me, and their final scene is hopeful enough to make it not a sad ending for me. But:

that whole thing where Shen Wei can flip into Black Cloak mode even while wearing those ridiculous sleeve garters...

THIS, so much. It's so compelling to watch - the way the person beneath comes through, in both roles. Sometimes like flipping a switch into Envoy mode, but sometimes just the subtle steel underneath the mild-mannered surface, or the unexpected kindness under the mask. Seriously, I love that SO MUCH.

And everything you say about ZYL, of course, because I adore him and his irreverence and cleverness and persistence, and also the way he knows how to back off sometimes. Because he pushes boundaries a lot, but that's not all he knows how to do. ♥

My friend simboo who is into all kinds of Asian dramas got me hooked on Asian BL. At first I refused to watch Guardian, because *no textual BL*, but she kept raving and I caved and the rest is history. ;)

I still have misgivings about them never being able to kiss (argh, it pains me, every single scene!), but it is the first show I have ever seen where the romance is text and just not shown explicitly. It's the opposite of the US crap where they never commit - on Guardian they're doing everything they can and I love how different that is. It's (almost) enough for me.

I have not even finished watching (am now on ep 29), because a) it's so tragic and b) I don't want it to end.

My favorite scene is when Zhao Yunlan goes blind and the first thing he says is "Shen Wei?" and Shen Wei holds his hand and says "It's me." The absolute best!

Of course, once I started, I fell in love with Zhu Yilong. There is no getting out of this ditch anymore now.

a list of things I do
- write fic as foxghost on ao3 but not for this fandom ok ONLY this short thing on my PF and if i write more they'll probably go on here and PF
- draw fanart but I haven't for this fandom yet (foxgh0st on dA)
- translate things and write the occasional meta. (linked off the sidebar of my tumblog, @foxghost)
- translate fanvids. So far, 151 of them.
- answer any naming / cultural question that end up in my msg/inbox on tumblr

I didn't watch a lot of c-drama before Guardian, since I came from a traditional-chinese-reading background, so i mostly read danmei novels (i love 大風颳過!) and watched the occasional TW or HK thing. But Guardian --- which got recced to me by a youtube algorithm bc taiwanese drama obsession, probably --- made me learn how to read simplified. And now that i've opened that door it's all over for me.

Currently making my way through SCI謎案集 (it is so good actually) and all four of the completed books.

hi, I'm dt / dtriad @ tumblr / Dayadhvam @ AO3. Rather belatedly found this comm, but thanks to the mods for setting it up. :)

I saw chatter about Guardian in NiF fandom etc. and decided to check it out--and then the next thing I knew I'd blown through the whole drama and was brushing up my rusty reading skills to tackle the novel. While the drama and novel have different characterizations, relationship dynamics, and tropes, they just happen to appeal to different parts of my fannish id and I LOVE THEM BOTH. (They're diff enough that I do prefer the 'verses kept strictly separate and am a bit meh about priest's fix-it extra 4. I'd say novel!ZYL wins out as my fave by a hair.)

Favorite drama scene: "Worth it." SW's bitterless smile! ZYL's confused anger! plus every other scene where SW looks at ZYL with suppressed desire, plus every other scene where ZYL looks at SW with blatant desire... so, discounting the scenes where they look at each other in pain at the thought of losing each other, 95% of their on-screen shared scenes :D?

Guardian made me want to try my hand at Ch->Eng translation for the first time, so... yep. (Maybe in the future I'll revert to my past fandom participation norm and actually write fic. XD)

Hi - belatedly commenting because belated to the comm; all the introductions were a lot of fun to read, and I'm glad there's a noticeboard like this on Dreamwidth! I'm one of the people solo got into the show, and she pointed me here too.

solo showed me the first three episodes in August, and I was intrigued, but then we moved house and went on a long vacation and it took me a little while to pick the show back up. Then episode 6 happened, specifically the mugging scene at the end and its continuation in episode 7, and... doom. :-) (So many layers in that scene! So much happening in the silences! Sudden intimacy over ongoing prickliness!)

I remember very little about October/November except "I went to work and then I went home and watched Guardian". That last weekend when we mainlined first Chu's dream arc and then the final arc was... a trip. Guardian was the first cdrama I ever watched (though then it didn't stay the only one) and I don't speak any Chinese, so that added to the whole "going down the rabbit hole in a rollercoaster" sensation.

I've read parts of the novel translation and I'm intrigued by the second strand of canon, but it also feels a little strange to see the differences and contrasts to the show. I'm only just starting to discover the fic that exists for the show.

I've been in fandom since the mid-1990s but I spent about the last 10 years basically mono-fannish (in Jpop/KAT-TUN/Akame fandom), so now I feel quite wobbly venturing into a new and active fandom and doing such things as... joining comms and introducing myself and trying to find out where the coffee machine is. *g* But it's also very exciting!

I'm only on ep 10 of the series, and I think I'm going to at least try to not rush but savor it. I'm also going to read the translation, although I'm bummed I won't be able to read the original.

I first came across the show from rheasilvia's journal, and I was kind of immediately on the ship. It just brings together so many of my bulletproof tropes from every fandom I've ever been in. It's been a dizzying descent since.

It just brings together so many of my bulletproof tropes from every fandom I've ever been in.

I think it's magic like that! It does the same for me, and they might well be a completely different set of tropes (I mostly come from a background of buddy-cop fandoms, with some Kdramas thrown in for good measure). It's like the intersection of all fannishness or something! :-D

I am very new to Guardian but I have binge watched all 40 episodes in a week and am a bit overwhelmed. I kept hearing about this show (e.g. from trobadora and the Be the Serpent podcast) and checked it out. You know how the rest goes.

I rewatched episode 1 today and tried to find out what cinched the whole thing for me (of course I also needed some comfort after the finale):

1 - Shen Wei's first smile right at the start
2 - Zhao's general octopus manner with Guo
3 - the lollipop moment, that's the one that made me sit up and take notice
4 - Shen Wei's heart eyes when he meets Zhao Yunlan

hello! i'm no_detective on pretty much every platform (tho not active on tumblr) and i'm here because bonibaru reeled me in with a certain ship recruitment vid of hers she posted on twitter. then i watched the entire show in 2 days, and... now i need a support group because weilan ate my brain :)

the moments that got me hooked in the pilot ep:
- shen wei's sleeve garters
- zhao yunlan's weaponized lollipop use (i mean omg)
- obvious team-as-family dynamic; gotta love that, plus the general isle-of-misfit-toys vibe of the group
- shen wei's obvs historical hearteyes and zhao yunlan's near-immediate obsession with figuring him out
- and let's not forget the show's ~subtle yet firm commitment to passing along the novel's m/m even in subtext - e.g. less than 15 minutes in, carefully making sure to frame zhao yunlan against the backdrop of a bit of ancient dick (ARTISTICALLY):



aaaaaaanyway :D i've been in slash fandoms since smallville and, while i don't write, did a lot in beta and cheerleading in a bunch of fandoms since (all the usual suspects from SGA to teen wolf and beyond). however, i haven't really had a fave show or pairing in quite some time, so this feels like a revival of sorts. i mean, i made a playlist so my friends know this is already super serious ;)

the weilan d/s dynamic, paired with the unique circumstances of their meeting each other and affecting each other's lives (...is this non-spoilery enough?), hits a spectacular number of my buttons. and while i'm generally not into angst, there is so much vagueness and hand-waving of plot points in the show itself that i feel comfortable with its, uh, implied open-endedness, shall we say. unfortunately i don't speak/read mandarin, but i'm genuinely blown away by the work that fandom has done in making this show accessible beyond the language barriers. ♥

I'm delighted to find someone else who was also compelled to watch the whole show in two days! It's a personal record for me, but OMG, I couldn't stop.

Personally I see the ending as open and hopeful, so I'm very happy with it. And the whole show. My only grief is that, like you (and too many of us) I don't speak Mandarin. But yeah, so much subtitling! For the show and the fanvids and the interviews! It's really great.

And DAMN, that screencap! I never actually noticed that, but OMG. This show is just delightful in so many ways. *stares*

Hi! I'm Ami, and I binged the show last week and fell in love.

Both ZYL and SW are adorable and my favorites, though all the members of SID have a special place in my heart.

I'm usually a writer (though idk how much Iwill be able to contribute) and a devoted reader and commenter, so you'll probably see me squeeing over fanfic either in DW or AO3 (in which I'm AmiLu).

Guardian is my first Cdrama and it will probably drive me to learn Chinese, because that's just who I am.

I don't yet have a favorite scene, because all the scenes are so fantastic (particularly the ZYL/SW ones) that it's difficult to choose. Maybe once I rewatch the whole show I'll be able to mention one.

I've been lurking for a bit, but never properly introduced myself. I fell into the Guardian pit via a fanvid recommendation during the summer, and I still haven't crawled out of the hell basement! I genuinely think Guardian is the best romance I've seen/read across all mediums in 2018.

Shen Wei with his repressed, stoic pining and steadfast, self-sacrificing loyalty/devotion. Zhao Yunlan with his endless patience and his devil-may-care attitude hiding his more sensitive and deeply intense emotional core. Shen Wei being young and open, falling head-over-heels for the older man who offers him friendship and affection. Zhao Yunlan going from suspicious (but thirsty) to adoring (but thirsty) when it comes to Shen Wei. The found family dynamics of the SID team, and Zhao Yunlan’s loyalty/protectiveness of them is something I love as well.

Favourite Scene:

(Serious) - The kitchen scene at the end of Episode 23. That look in Shen Wei's eyes. The way his gaze falls to Zhao Yunlan's lips. So much heat and tension.

(Less Serious) - The lollipop scene. Please somebody let me see the script for that scene, because the script directions cannot possibly say: Shen Wei performs fellatio on a lollipop.

I have asya_ana to blame for getting me into Guardian because she kept posting about it on my flist and I finally succumbed to her promises of tropes and love and awesomeness (it did not disappoint).

I really don't think I can pick a favorite moment because there are just so many! Every episode gave us some Zhao Yunlan/Shen Wei deliciousness. So I'll pick my favorite moment that doesn't have to do with them, which is when Old Li is petting Da Qing and feeding him dried fish when Da Qing has been hypnotized.

I'd love something like the First Reader comm that used to exist on LJ, but I'd honestly be happy with a page where people volunteer for beta reading Guardian fics and talk about what they are/are not willing to read, kinds of beta they can do, formats they want fic in (word, etc).

I'm a fandom fan, a lurker, and whatever picks my senses make me come to a fandom to see what it happens. I'm multifandom. I don't usually create content for any of them, but lately I did in English (I'm Argentine and Spanish is my language so) and I really miss doing icons.
Like I said in tumblr green sell me this short so I can't choose a favorite scene or character of this madness, but I suppose Shen Wei and Ye Shun are my favorites, but DAMM! they put it hard!

Hi :) So I've been lurking for a while now, but only recently decided to take the plunge and join this community. It made sense given I was lurking and refreshing for new posts on an almost daily basis!

I don't remember how I got into Guardian - I think there was a rec post somewhere that I left for later viewing and then weeks later somehow I got sucked in and never really came back out... It's pretty much the first fandom in *years* to make me feel fan-ish again.

I have too many favourite scenes - I guess if I were to pick, I would say the first episode where Shen Wei wouldn't let go of Zhao Yun Lan's hand and then they hinted at the history/backstory because that set off the spark of fan-ishness and made me go '???' because it was so *obvious* and it hit all of my favourite tropes (meet cute, pining, secret mysterious backstory, soulmates meeting (again??) and adorable extrovert/introvert pairing, complex dynamics)... the list goes on and on!

It's been, uh, around 10 years since I was last active in fandom, I think, so I'm a bit rusty. I guess this is the power of Shen Wei and Zhao Yun Lan - pulling people back to fan-ish glee since 2018! It's been fun seeing some familiar names around here though. Hopefully I will be less of a lurker, it's been tough dusting off these cobwebs ;)
