Welcome to SID Guardian!

A banner for the SID_Guardian comm on Dreamwidth

Hi, and welcome to SID Guardian!

[community profile] sid_guardian is a noticeboard/community for:

  • linking Guardian fanworks of all kinds

  • linking to Guardian-related news (incl. info about the actors and their other roles) and meta (incl. serious meta, squee, picspams, episode reactions, writing-meta)

  • making Guardian recs, and

  • making fanworks-finder/rec-finder posts.

  • ETA: You can also post content directly to the comm.

Which is to say, it's for letting Guardian fans find each other on Dreamwidth. :)

Please link your Guardian-related posts here! Whether novel or drama, this is the place for it. Don't be shy, and please encourage other Guardian posters to link as well. You can also link to/rec things that have been posted by others.

As the comm develops, we hope to introduce social, discussion and/or prompt posts, but given it's December, we thought we'd start small and manageable.

To kick things off, if you feel like it, tell us a bit about how you ended up in Guardian fandom! Or let us know your favourite character or scene from Guardian, or what your power would be if you were Dixingren.

And remember, there's no tension that can’t be relieved with a lollipop. And if there is, try two lollipops.

Hi, I'm china, one of the co-mods.

I've been in fandom since 2004 and watching Kdramas since 2013, but Guardian is my first Cdrama. [personal profile] naye kept posting about it and in October she linked me to this vid, and I realised that Zhao Yunlan the show was extremely relevant to my interests. I started watching and fell in love.

I'm a ficwriter, iconner, occasional recapper, and even more occasional vidder.

My favourite scene is when we first discover what a trainwreck Zhao Yunlan's apartment is. His fridge, bwahaha! And Shen Wei's furiously exasperated reaction to same. *heart-eyes*

but I honestly couldn't say why I decided to actually start watching that day.

FATE! :-)

(I'm supposed to be a writer myself, but still haven't finished my first fic. ARGH!)

You'll get there! There's plenty of time. :-)

but the best part's the empty bottles lying around.

I know! Like, HEAPS of them! Someone really needs a babysitter!!

Hello comm! What a wonderful idea!

At one point this summer all of my old Nirvana in Fire mutuals on Tumblr were all suddenly screaming about Guardian in a very, very effective sort of way.

The first gifset I saw was incredibly spoilery and made me go "I need to find out what happened to that one guy the other guy was so worried about!" (Oh sweet summer child. Current me can tell past me she's not going to like it.) (It was from episode 39. I mean not to spoil anyone who's wandered in halfway through watching the series, but. Yeah.)

And the post that got me real interested was this flailing by Lazulisong, and then the non-spoilery gifset I saw that made me go oh no I must watch this right now was this one of the taxi scene in episode 8.

Because. Oh. That tenderness...!

So I watched it all and I have rewatched most of it and also read as much of the novel as is translated (without skipping ahead, though, so I guess that's chapter 69 or so now?).

Guardian has sparked my creativity in amazing ways, and I am so grateful for it. ♥ I've made quite a few gif sets on Tumblr (including some with original poetry?? I've never done that before...), and I write a bit of fic. (Including my first explicit m/m!)

I talk a lot about the WIP that ate my life - also known as
A Twist of the Kaleidoscope. It's a massive fix-it with extra everything that follows canon up until episode... well, mostly until 29? But then it really veers off in 33. It's tagged as a Nobody Dies/Everybody Lives AU, and also Angst With A Happy Ending. And after 93k words, I am almost there. Almost, but not quite! The first four chapters are up, and this fandom has been so amazingly generous with comments and feedback. <3

Anyway. Yeah, I have it bad. (And by that I mean I am so happy here!) I've got a background in Japanese, so I can puzzle out the meaning of written Chinese, but my comprehension in general is pretty much nil. My wife, however, is a native Mandarin speaker, so I tend to force her to tell me what Zhu Yilong and Bai Yu are saying in their ads and interviews, much to her amusement. (I don't think she'll ever be over Bai Yu's KFC Chicken Taco. ...the chicken is the taco?!)

Haaai! Yay, you're here!

and then the non-spoilery gifset I saw that made me go oh no I must watch this right now was this one of the taxi scene in episode 8.

I remember you posting about that at the time. \o/ \o/ \o/

Also, NINETY-THREE THOUSAND WORDS, WOW!!!!

Of course! I came as soon as I saw it~!

Ahhhhhhh the taxi scene. And then after, in Yunlan's apartment...! I mean, I was pretty well and truly hooked before then, but that scene just. My heart. ♥

93k?! I know, it doesn't feel real to me either. I have no experience with fic this long?? But I just finished the massive parallel to episodes 38-40 (it goes... quite differently!) and it's been amazing fun. I am looking forward to being done, because I am literally doing nothing else right now - but also because it will be so interesting to see what happens. (I do a bit of plotting, but a lot of writing happens when I just let the characters run with a scene.)

I was pretty hooked before then too, but at episode 8 I kind of lost it and was clutching myself going, "I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS OMG!"

This is very exciting, thanks for starting the comm!

I first heard about Guardian from the wonderful AvenueX's first video about it, but I didn't start watching until a friend watched the first episode and told me that it had an excellent meet cute. Then I spent the rest of August (and most of the time since, frankly) obsessed with it!

Favourite scene is tough because there are so many to choose from, but I'm a big h/c fan, so I remember first watching the whole stomach ache/taxi/putting to bed/ZYL wakes up the next morning and SW's still there scene with a sort of stunned glee...

Other than our two leads obviously, I'm a big fan of Da Qing! I find him and Zhao Yunlan being beffies super cute, and I love the way they're sort of casually affectionate with each other and also how much Da Qing takes the piss out of him for being obsessed with Shen Wei. I also think Li Wei does a really good job of playing the physicality of a man who's a cat without it ever being cheesy.

I also like Zhu Hong a lot, and wish she could have got a slightly better plot line than being hopelessly in love with ZYL.

Yay, so glad to see you here! :-)

Ahaha, right?! Everything about that scene!

And yes, I really love Da Qing's little feline gestures and moments, too. <3

I also like Zhu Hong a lot, and wish she could have got a slightly better plot line than being hopelessly in love with ZYL.

I'm so glad to see this place exist! :D

It's so awesome that you guys fell into Guardian by chance - it's such a lovely place to be!

And YES let's all praise Bai Yu for the taxi scene and everyone else for really going all out with it. ♥

I hope you keep being inspired after you've finished your WIP!

Me too! There's so much more I want to write!

Your first? Wow! I would never have guessed that.

Ahahah~. Thank you, that's lovely praise! But yeeah. I'm more of a gen fan, normally? And I found it quite challenging to write explicit stuff - mostly because I felt like hiding under a pile of blankets until I'd stopped blushing. (Though to be fair, it's not my first explicit fic - I do have 17k words of M/M/F/F to my name from Dragon Age 2...)

... is it very bad that my first thought at this is how much I envy you? LOL.

I try not to abuse the privilege! But just today I showed her a video of Bai Yu and wanted to know if he was using his Beijing accent (Zhao Yunlan sounds quite Beijing, normally) - and he wasn't! So now I know. (I didn't ask her to translate the whole interview, though I may spring it on her later...)

Guardian comm – yay!!! :)

I first saw people talking about Guardian on [community profile] fail_fandomanon. And finally in August I thought “I have nothing new to watch, it’s easily available on youtube, I don’t have to torrent anything, let’s try it.” I liked it from the start and enjoyed the prettiness of the cast very, very much. :) And then came episode 7 and that scene in the beginning with Zhao Yunlan “saving” Shen Wei from the thugs, and I knew I was in love. The fandom is great for me because I love both the big paring Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan and the smaller pairing Chu Shuzi/Guo Changcheng. And Guardian inspired me to write fanfic again, which is such a nice feeling, because I missed it a lot.

I took a while to warm up to Xiao-Guo - the first couple episodes, his scenes came too close to hitting my embarrassment squick

I understand perfectly, I found Guo Changcheng very annoying in the 1st episode, too. But I changed my mind pretty quickly. Can't really remember now when exactly, but again by episode 7 I already liked him a lot and I shipped him with Chu. :)

They are so cute?! I kind of bonded with Xiao Guo after reading the novel - his social anxiety is so relatable, and yet he tries so hard...! The show writing doesn't do him any favors, but he's just the most adorable puppy? And his Chu-ge who is so gruff and angry with everyone else just ends up treasuring him so much it's adorable.

I love the novel's description of GCC as a depressed mushroom, because it fits him so perfectly! The start of the story where he's meeting/being horrified by everyone at SID is just so funny.

Xiao Guo really is a very likeable character in the novel, in my opinion. Actually, the one who has a truly good heart and genuinely thinks of others first. I hope the rest of the translation will go apace so that you can read the scenes that inspired GCC's ability in the last parts of the TV series (trying to avoid being too spoilery).

I don't remember exactly how I ended up watching Guardian (my memory is going down the drain thanks to never getting a full night's sleep anymore), just that I somehow got it confused with Nirvana in Fire? I was late enough in watching it on Youtube that I only got to ep 16 when it was suddenly taken down for a while. I watched the next few eps without subs (it was okay, I can speak enough Chinese to get by) and then [personal profile] china_shop helped me out ;)
It took me awhile to finish watching and I read the novel alongside it. Because my ebook reader hated the file, finishing the novel took ages (1 minute to turn a page in a 600 page document... *grumble*). I remember being hooked from the start, though. The romance is so incredibly obvious, I thought that something like that would never make it onto a screen in China and in that format. Anyway, it's been the spark that I've been missing and it's rekindled my passion for learning Chinese. I've actually started reading another BL novel in Chinese by now.
It's hard to choose a favorite scene, but I concur that the scenes in Zhao Yunlan's apartment are shipping gold.

For me, Guardian started out on a whim. Several people mentioned it on my DW friendslist, but I had no real intention of watching it. Still, when I was visiting a friend, I suggested we check it out. And now, I am hooked, she is hooked, several others have also been infected at this point... it's spreading like the flu. ;-)

Thanks to Guardian, I've started writing fanfic again - and it's been years! I really can't tell you how wonderful it is to be writing slash again, even though I do still feel rusty.

I honestly love both Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei. Still, Yunlan does have a slight edge in my heart (even though I find Shen Wei more physically attractive).

Yunlan's just so sharp and insightful and competent. He can hold his own as a human facing inhumanly powerful people - and he's also so open-minded and kind and passionate about protecting *everyone*, not just humans. I also love his flippant, irreverent, cheeky ways, and the streak of recklessness and lack of care for himself, and how none of it can conceal how much he truly *cares*.

And I admire that he became this remarkable person all by himself, without the help of a guiding hand when he was young. He became the amazing person he is despite, not because of his environment.

My Dixingian power would probably be keeping tea warm indefinitely. Or subjectively stopping time while reading a good story.

(Hi, everyone! I am a fannish slash dinosaur who started out in fandom back in 1998, when I found Mulder/Krycek X-Files slash. Since then, I have been in a myriad of fandoms from Eroica, Saiyuki, Utena and Tokyo Babylon / X1999 to X-Men, Smalville and Supernatural. I've most recently been devouring Bucky/Steve stories. And I watch kdrama - mostly romcoms!)

I love that scene - that entire episode, really! The way Yunlan *lounges* on the bed in front of Shen Wei.

And both of their apartments are done so well. It makes me happy that the show pays such attention to details like this - that it successfully characterizes them both through their living environment.

(That shield and swords on Shen Wei's wall... that really does not belong in a genetics professor's home. But I am sure nobody would be too surprised, given that the rest of the place is so genuinely professorish...) /ramble

YES! The bottles! And the tools on the wall, as though they are deco! He would put that ridiculously macho truck in his living room too if he could...

Also, I feel your writer's pain. I have finished one story, but it's a weird crossover, so I don't know if it really counts. ;-) Meanwhile I have... 5 wips. *headdesk*
