A banner for the SID_Guardian comm on Dreamwidth

Hi, and welcome to SID Guardian!

[community profile] sid_guardian is a noticeboard/community for:

  • linking Guardian fanworks of all kinds

  • linking to Guardian-related news (incl. info about the actors and their other roles) and meta (incl. serious meta, squee, picspams, episode reactions, writing-meta)

  • making Guardian recs, and

  • making fanworks-finder/rec-finder posts.

  • ETA: You can also post content directly to the comm.

Which is to say, it's for letting Guardian fans find each other on Dreamwidth. :)

Please link your Guardian-related posts here! Whether novel or drama, this is the place for it. Don't be shy, and please encourage other Guardian posters to link as well. You can also link to/rec things that have been posted by others.

As the comm develops, we hope to introduce social, discussion and/or prompt posts, but given it's December, we thought we'd start small and manageable.

To kick things off, if you feel like it, tell us a bit about how you ended up in Guardian fandom! Or let us know your favourite character or scene from Guardian, or what your power would be if you were Dixingren.

And remember, there's no tension that can’t be relieved with a lollipop. And if there is, try two lollipops.

Our lovely fandom continues to grow beyond our wildest expectations! Comm membership has just hit 100 98 (and we got impatient)! *shameless champagne and ballooooons*

A few small notes and reminders:

  1. The Welcome/Intro post and the Fannish Resources post are still alive and kicking. Feel free to drop in at any time and say hi, or give us all your resource links (even the ones that might seem really obvious)!

  2. Lurking is also totally fine, of course! *waves to lurkers*

  3. Please tag your posts to the comm so other users can easily find what they’re looking for. In particular, it would be great if you could use the canon: drama and/or canon: novel tags, since it’s not always obvious to us mods which should apply, including for fanart or vids that use drama visuals but draw on novel elements. This is our current list of tags, and we’ll add more type tags as the need arises.

  4. You can find the full (updated) comm rules on the profile page.

  5. Feel free to promote [community profile] sid_guardian on your journal or elsewhere. (Here's a graphic and text.)

And now, without further ado...

The SID team smiling at each other, with a banner reading "Guardian Friending Meme".

Since some of us are new to Dreamwidth, and some of us are new to Guardian, it seems like a good time for a Dreamwidth friending meme. Come and meet new people! (Re)Populate your DW circle!

To participate, just copy the text below, paste it into a new comment and tell us about yourself. (All information is optional.) Then read through other people's comments and say hi / follow them as desired.

Hi! 11 wishlists are now live and ready for gifts on [community profile] guardian_wishlist! :D :D :D Come and check them out!

Wishlists are tagged for fandoms and media. Previous years' tags are labelled with their respective years, so check the plain fandom and media tags at the bottom for this year's wishlists.

We've also put together a spreadsheet for your convenience, and we'll be updating it as more wishlists go live.

The Guardian_Wishlist_2026 AO3 collection is open for posting.

A change for 2026: You can post gifts either in a comment on the recipient's wishlist or in the AO3 collection. That is, AO3 gifts no longer need to be linked on Dreamwidth (though of course you’re welcome to). Recipients are expected to check their wishlists for non-AO3 gifts, and a few days after reveals, we’ll also post a round-up to make them easier to find for other participants and the fandom at large. Gift comments on wishlists can be anonymous or signed in. Comments are screened until reveals.

And remember, sign-ups are open until 4 September. The sooner you sign up, the more time people have to make fills for your prompts!

Come and join in! The more, the merrier!

Hello, Guardian Rewatchers! Thanks so much to all of you who've been part of the discussion, or have been reading along. ♥

Come join us for round 5 of the Guardian Slo-Mo Rewatch. We're watching half an episode a week (about twenty minutes) so we can talk and squee about our beloved 镇魂 | Guardian drama. With the fifth batch of episodes, we have the start of the Merit Brush arc, the blindness arc with all its domesticity, culminating in the Sundial Exchange, another visit to Dixing, a video game, and the personality switch.

For those who remember our last rewatch a few years back, this time we're aiming for a lighter touch. Posts are on the minimalist side - a brief summary, one quote, one screencap, maybe one noteworthy detail and some discussion-starter questions. Minimalist comments are more than welcome, too!

We're looking forward to some fun discussions as we revisit Haixing, Dixing, and the SID – and of course you can always drop in on any of the previous discussions at any time.

Fans of the novel, the drama, or both are very welcome! You don't have to keep up with the rewatch – it's absolutely fine to dip in and out. We want to hear what you think! Those of us who participated in the Readalong or are otherwise familiar with the novel are likely to compare and contrast the two canons, but it's 100% okay to focus purely on the drama.

Please consider hosting a post or two! Comment with a date from the schedule below! Posts should ideally be made sometime on the Friday or Saturday, in any time zone.

Hi, welcome back to our Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch! Watch half an episode a week, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!

Here is the first half of episode 20. On to the second half!

Episode 20 from 22:26:

Summary:

Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei are en route to the Inspectorate when Zhao Yunlan has a vision of Xiao-Guo unconscious and Zhu Jiu at the Hallows. He stops the car and insists Shen Wei go ahead on his own. Importantly, Shen Wei grips Zhao Yunlan's arm, and Zhao Yunlan pats Shen Wei's knee. Meanwhile, Ye Zun has psychically woken up Zhu Jiu. Xiao-Guo (inexplicably left alone to move him) unties Zhu Jiu to let him use the loo, and they have a philosophical debate about the merits of humanity. Then Zhu Jiu attacks.

Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan in the car, touching each other

Zhao Yunlan calls Zhu Hong and tells her to move the Hallows, then runs back towards the SID. Zhu Jiu finds the Hallows gone, but manages to prevail in a confrontation with Chu Shuzhi, Da Qing and Lin Jing. He escapes and offers his energy to Ye Zun as the last bit he needs to (temporarily) escape the Sky Pillar - where the Regent and the Attendant are watching. Zhao Yunlan meets up with Zhu Hong, who has the Sundial and the Awl, but they're accosted by Ya Qing, who takes them to meet Ye Zun's energy projection. Ye Zun tries politeness, philosophising about the need to let go of human desire, arguments about the oppression of Dixingren as well as flattery to turn Zhao Yunlan to his side, but his various self-justifications are not convincing. Zhao Yunlan calls him on killing both humans and Dixingren. When Ye Zun realises it's not working, he attacks, and Zhao Yunlan defends himself with the Sundial. Meanwhile, Shen Wei has arrived at the Inspectorate - only to immediately zoom away again because his Hallows alarm went off.

Zhao Yunlan taunts Ye Zun, who demands the Hallows. Slowly Ye Zun starts winning the fight against the Sundial's shielding. But then Shen Wei arrives, cutting the energy stream with his dao. Everyone is blasted back; Zhao Yunlan ends up unconscious on the grass. Shen Wei sends Ye Zun back to Dixing, and rushes to Zhao Yunlan's side. They hold hands. But when Zhao Yunlan opens his eyes, he's blind.

Quote:

The Attendant: "This summoning isn't enough to completely destroy the Pillar seal. Should we help him?"

The Regent: "Young man, it's not a good habit to be passionate about taking sides."

Detail(s):

The detail I want to highlight today is a parallel [personal profile] china_shop pointed out during the last rewatch:
parallels between Zhu Jiu's death with the bottle and Zhao Yunlan's death with the Guardian Lantern
Questions:

Which this your favourite part/scene/moment in this half-episode? Any favourite lines? Why would anyone leave Guo Changcheng alone with Zhu Jiu? Why didn't Zhao Yunlan tell Shen Wei about his premonition about Zhu Jiu escaping? What's the best part of Zhao Yunlan's confrontation with Ye Zun? Which is Ye Zun's best/worst argument for why he's totally in the right? What do you think Ya Qing makes of all of this? What does Ye Zun mean when he says Shen Wei is "still the same"? Which is the best Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan touch in this half-episode? Any thoughts about more parallels with other parts of the drama? Any thoughts about how any of this connects with the novel?

(These are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in!)

Here is our schedule for the current batch of episodes - please do sign up to host a post if you can!

Here are the previous weeks' rewatch posts.

Episode 20, up to 22:26

Summary
Zhu Jiu's backstory of workplace bullying. Under Ye Zun's influence, Zhu Jiu murders the bully, and Hei Pao Shi punishes him for this violence by slicing his cheek. Back at the SID, Zhu Jiu is unconscious and so can't be interrogated about the lab's location. Meanwhile, the Inspectorate are detaining Lin Jing and Cong Bo for turning off the city's power. Zhu Hong injects Zhu Jiu with Snake revivification juice, and it works but not quickly enough, so they go back to the one piece of evidence they have: the video message from the lab. They find a lead.

The three at the lab wake to find the power outage has reset the lab's temperature controls. Meanwhile, Da Qing arrives at the Inspectorate in a good suit to retrieve Lin Jing and Cong Bo.

Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan break into the zero-degree lab, where everyone is alive and well, though Guo Changcheng is faint with hunger. Minister Gao is furious about the whole stunt, but Zhao Xinci arrives to back the SID's play. Minister Gao settles for summoning Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei to reprimand them.

In the lab, Professor Ouyang shows off his pretty serum but says safety concerns are slowing the project down. Zhao Xinci tells him it's urgent. Zhang Shi tries to reinstate the safety concerns but is suppressed.

The Reunion Feast! Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan tease each other delightfully at the head of the table but then are called away to see Minister Gao. As Zhao Yunlan gets into the taxi, he hears Ye Zun calling him, and once they're on the road, he tells Shen Wei that he's always known that he (Zhao Yunlan) isn't built for love.

Quote
Minister Gao: I do personally appreciate Yunlan. But he has boundless imagination and loves to employ surprising ideas. This is totally unlike you, Brother Zhao.
Zhao Xinci: Yes, he's not like me. He is too obstinate.

Detail
By the time the rescuers arrive, Chu Shuzhi has not only retreated to the front of the lab, but taken his clothes back from Guo Changcheng as well.

Questions
Do you have a favourite scene or line of dialogue from this half episode? What do you make of Shen Wei's part in Zhu Jiu's backstory? How good is Da Qing's suit (and did he tie his own tie, or did Lao Li do it for him)? Why does Chu Shuzhi withdraw from the others in the lab, once the danger has passed? Do you enjoy the little fake-out about Changcheng being dead? Any sympathy for Minister Gao? On a scale of 1 to 10, how lovely is the Reunion Festival feast? What does it mean that Zhao Yunlan can still hear Ye Zun calling him? Any thoughts about what Zhao Yunlan says in the taxi?

Did you see any parallels in these scenes with other parts of the drama? If you're familiar with the novel, any thoughts about how the drama adaptation compares, if at all?

(As usual, these are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in. We'd love to hear your thoughts!)

If you're linking to fanworks you didn't create yourself, please clearly mark these "REC", so there's no confusion about authorship/creatorship.

(And please still do link your fanworks, meta, etc. separately, in their own post, at any time!)

Hi, welcome back to our Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch! Watch half an episode a week, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!

Here is the first half of episode 19. On to the second half!

Episode 19 from 20:18:

Summary: In the lab, Guo Changcheng gives first aid to Ye Huo while Zhu Jiu attempts to recruit Chu Shuzhi. Zhu Jiu is momentarily taken in by Chu Shuzhi's mad laughter, then furious at Chu Shuzhi's rejection and taunting, but a phone call interrupts them: Zhao Yunlan wants to trade the Hallows for the kidnapping victims. Zhu Jiu leaves the lab, but not before explaining that it's an absolute zero lab and setting it to cool down. Meanwhile, Shen Wei meets with Fourth Uncle, trying to convince him to keep Ya Qing busy while they trap Zhu Jiu. It takes the combined effort of Shen Wei, Zhu Hong and Ying Chun, but eventually Fourth Uncle agrees. And elsewhere, Lin Jing and Cong Bo are working on the trap for Zhu Jiu, both worried about the gravity of what they're planning.

Chu Shuzhi laughs at Zhu Jiu

In the lab, Xiao-Guo finds a "stop" button but then immediately manages to make it inaccessible. Ye Huo attempts to use his fire for warmth, but his powers fizzle out. Ya Qing, called in for a Yashou meeting, arrives at Fourth Uncle's house and lets herself be convinced to stay. On a rooftop, Zhao Yunlan, Shen Wei and Zhu Hong get ready to meet Zhu Jiu. Shen Wei uses the Hallows to project a signal into the sky. Meanwhile in the lab, Guo Changcheng tries to say good-bye, then passes out, and Chu Shuzhi wraps him in his own coat. On the rooftop, Zhao Yunlan confronts Zhu Jiu, and Cong Bo cuts power as Zhu Jiu attempts to leave. In the dark, Shen Wei cuts him with his dao, and Zhao Yunlan handcuffs him. Shen Wei asks why Zhu Jiu hates him so much, and Zhu Jiu dramatically brushes back his hair.

Quote:

Ying Chun to Ya Qing: 青姐,我就知道,你心里还是有亚兽族的!
"Qing-jie, I knew it! You still care for the Yashou tribes!"

(Talk about completely missing Ya Qing's actual concerns and motivation!)

Detail(s):

Both Chu Shuzhi and Ye Huo are well educated, and explain physics and biology to Guo Changcheng:
  • Ye Huo knows about thermodynamics and explains absolute zero
  • Chu Shuzhi knows about the nervous system and explains its responses to hypothermia
Did they learn those things in Dixing or Haixing? We don't know, but my headcanon is Dixing. :)

Questions:

Which this your favourite part/scene/moment in this half-episode? Any favourite lines? Why does Fourth Uncle immediately recognise Shen Wei as the Envoy, when Ying Chun didn't? How does Zhu Hong feel about teaming up with Shen Wei to convince her uncle? How can one single person be simultaneously so brave and so frustratingly hapless as Guo Changcheng? Why does Zhu Jiu think he can turn Chu Shuzhi against the Envoy so easily? Why does Ya Qing stay with Fourth Uncle and Ying Chun, rather than rushing off to save Zhu Jiu? Do you like how the plan against Zhu Jiu comes together? How great is it that they put an armchair on a rooftop for Zhao Yunlan to sit in? Any thoughts about parallels with other parts of the drama? Any thoughts about whether (or how) any of this connects with the novel? And finally, a poll:

Additional Tags: Episode 16, Missing Scene, loyalty test, Secret Identity, Anti-Dixing Bigotry, Zhao Xinci’s A+ Parenting, Summary:

In Zhao Xinci’s day, he’d never have countenanced one of Them on his team. When races mingled, discord and divided loyalties were inevitable. But of course Yunlan thought he knew better, was apparently willing to bet Haixing’s security on the strength of the Dixing Envoy’s judgement and so set in place the perfect conditions for his own downfall. Zhao Xinci’s hand clenched on his tea mug, unthinkingly borrowing some of his stowaway’s strength.

Careful, murmured Zhang Shi, you’ll break it and give us away.

Next month, Guardian Wishlist 2026 will open for business at [community profile] guardian_wishlist!

This gifting fest runs along the lines of [community profile] fandomtrees and its ilk, but is specifically for Guardian (show, novel, and RPF) and related fandoms (main actors' other roles). It works like this:
  1. People sign up with a wishlist of prompts and things they'd like to receive. Requests can include any media, including transformative works like fic, art, icons, vids, podfic, and also picspams and meta, translation advice, related music links, lollipops, dried fish snacks, powerful ancient artefacts anything.

It's been really fantastic the last five years, and we're looking forward to another round to celebrate this year's Reunion Festival (Mid-Autumn Festival) - so start thinking about what kinds of things you want to ask for. (Don't hold back! Your wishlist could prompt someone to finally make the thing they've been meaning to make for ages - or something they hadn't realised they were dying to put together!)

Our schedule starts at in the middle of August, so we'll be back closer to the date with updated rules and guidelines (all announcements and such are crossposted here on [community profile] sid_guardian), but we wanted to let you know the timeline now:

Hi, and welcome back to the Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch. Watch half an episode a week, at your leisure, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!

Here are the previous weeks' rewatch posts.

Episode 19, up to 20:18

Summary
Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng are taking Ye Huo's proteges to safety when Zhu Jiu ambushes them. He puts Chu Shuzhi out of action and claims responsibility/credit for Bo Bi's brother's death. Ye Huo arrives and fights Zhu Jiu. Between Ye Huo and Chu Shuzhi (now back online), they get the upper hand, but Zhu Jiu explodes the fight club prize belt, knocking everyone out.

At the SID, despite knowing all the reasons not to, Zhao Yunlan contemplates using the Hallows to find Zhu Jiu. The Awl activates, and he takes it as a sign. It gives him a vision of being in a freezing lab where Guo Changcheng, Chu Shuzhi and Ye Huo are laid out on guernies, frozen and possibly dead; Chu Shuzhi wakes up and starts choking Zhao Yunlan while laughing maniacally. The nose bleed scene! Shen Wei is furious to find Zhao Yunlan unconscious again! The SID receives a ransom demand from Zhu Jiu: he wants the Hallows in exchange for the hostages.

In the lab, Ye Huo is badly hurt. Changcheng defies Zhu Jiu to insist on giving Ye Huo first aid. Chu Shuzhi distracts before Zhu Jiu can kill Changcheng. Meanwhile, Shen Wei and Zhu Hong head to the Snake village together; on the way, they talk about Zhu Hong's crush on Zhao Yunlan and the science of love.

Quote
Shen Wei: I don't know too much about love. But based on the aspect of bioengineering, at least three days, at most three years, dopamine and norepinephrine will stop secreting. Maybe at that time, you won't have any affection toward him anymore.

Detail
Zhao Yunlan's previous visions have just been flashes of the past or future; this is the first one where he's entered the vision himself and interacted with it. He even shields his eyes against the glare. Is this a symptom of dark energy corruption, the Awl trying to be helpful, or something else?

Questions
Do you have a favourite scene or line of dialogue from this half episode? (If it's the nosebleed scene, do you have a second favourite as well? ;-) How much better would Chu Shuzhi's day have gone if Guo Changcheng had just done what he was told? Which part of the fight did you enjoy the most (Chu Shuzhi vs Zhu Jiu, Ye Huo vs Zhu Jiu, etc)? Why does Zhao Yunlan persist in hoping that touching the Hallows will be at all helpful? What are the best things about the nosebleed scene, for you? What does Zhu Hong think about Shen Wei being the one to go and talk to Fourth Uncle? On a scale of 1 to 10,000, how brave is Guo Changcheng? Any thoughts about Zhu Hong and Shen Wei's conversation about love?

Did you see any parallels in these scenes with other parts of the drama? If you're familiar with the novel, any thoughts about how the drama adaptation compares, if at all?

(As usual, these are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in. We'd love to hear your thoughts!)

Hi, welcome back to our Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch! Watch half an episode a week, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!

Here is the first half of episode 18. On to the second half!

Episode 18 from 23:38:

Summary: Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei chase Ye Huo, but stop at a T junction. Lin Jing and Da Qing catch up, and the black energy detector shows both Ye Huo and another black energy signature. Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei follow Ye Huo, and a fight ensues, but eventually Ye Huo concedes defeat. Zhao Yunlan asks about Zhu Jiu, but Ye Huo doesn't know the name. Meanwhile Lin Jing and Da Qing find Ye Huo's base. Bo Bi also turns up, and all three of them get jumped by Ye Huo's friends. And at the fight club, Zhu Jiu kills one of the manager's flunkies and then the manager himself, but not before being extra-dramatically threatening at him.

Shen Wei watches as Zhao Yunlan uses a pallet to protect himself from Ye Huo's fire

Zhao Yunlan, Shen Wei and Ye Huo arrive at Ye Huo's house. Zhao Yunlan gets a phone call about what happened at the fight club. Ye Huo's friends demand Ye Huo's release, threatening their captives. Zhao Yunlan quips that they should be in school instead, and he and Shen Wei start discussing the Dixing education system, then segue into whether or not Zhao Yunlan will be allowed to go to Dixing again. Then Ye Huo tries to talk reason into his friends. In flashback we learn that Ye Huo discovered Zhu Jiu's life force-stealing scheme and has since been trying to protect people from it. Then Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng arrive to free the hostages. Ye Huo expects to be taken back to Dixing for judgment, but is granted mercy. Shen Wei tells him to leave the city, and Zhao Yunlan tells Chu Shuzhi to take the human boys somewhere else too. Lao-Chu gives the trophy belt back to Ye Huo. Meanwhile Ya Qing reminds Zhu Jiu of the three missions Ye Zun gave them, and Zhu Jiu struggles with his injury from the black energy gun, which is getting worse.

Quote:

Ye Huo to Chu Shuzhi: "Actually, I envy you, for being able to live freely and easily here."

Chu Shuzhi: "Yes, true, but my boss is a bastard who's full of himself."

Detail(s):

When Shen Wei summons his dao, ending the fight with Ye Huo, at first he holds it with the edge against Ye Huo's neck - but then he turns it, so it's the blunt side pointing at Ye Huo. He threatens Ye Huo, but only so far, signalling that he's not out for blood, and he's careful with the sharp edge of his weapon.

Questions: Which this your favourite part/scene/moment in this half-episode? Any favourite lines? Why do Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan stop at the T junction? How does tracking Ye Huo via the trophy belt work? Why does Ye Huo stop fighting back eventually? What do you think is the best way of getting schools in Dixing? (Is it removing the Regent? *g*) How confused were Ye Huo's friends by Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei not taking their hostage-taking very seriously? Is Ye Huo as a masked saviour a parallel for the Envoy? What exactly does the black energy gun do, that Zhu Jiu seems to be dying from his injury? What is the third mission Ye Zun gave them? And finally, any thoughts about whether (or how) any of this connects with the novel?

(These are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in!)
