Welcome to SID Guardian!

A banner for the SID_Guardian comm on Dreamwidth

Hi, and welcome to SID Guardian!

[community profile] sid_guardian is a noticeboard/community for:

  • linking Guardian fanworks of all kinds

  • linking to Guardian-related news (incl. info about the actors and their other roles) and meta (incl. serious meta, squee, picspams, episode reactions, writing-meta)

  • making Guardian recs, and

  • making fanworks-finder/rec-finder posts.

  • ETA: You can also post content directly to the comm.

Which is to say, it's for letting Guardian fans find each other on Dreamwidth. :)

Please link your Guardian-related posts here! Whether novel or drama, this is the place for it. Don't be shy, and please encourage other Guardian posters to link as well. You can also link to/rec things that have been posted by others.

As the comm develops, we hope to introduce social, discussion and/or prompt posts, but given it's December, we thought we'd start small and manageable.

To kick things off, if you feel like it, tell us a bit about how you ended up in Guardian fandom! Or let us know your favourite character or scene from Guardian, or what your power would be if you were Dixingren.

And remember, there's no tension that can’t be relieved with a lollipop. And if there is, try two lollipops.

I don't remember exactly how I ended up watching Guardian (my memory is going down the drain thanks to never getting a full night's sleep anymore), just that I somehow got it confused with Nirvana in Fire? I was late enough in watching it on Youtube that I only got to ep 16 when it was suddenly taken down for a while. I watched the next few eps without subs (it was okay, I can speak enough Chinese to get by) and then [personal profile] china_shop helped me out ;)
It took me awhile to finish watching and I read the novel alongside it. Because my ebook reader hated the file, finishing the novel took ages (1 minute to turn a page in a 600 page document... *grumble*). I remember being hooked from the start, though. The romance is so incredibly obvious, I thought that something like that would never make it onto a screen in China and in that format. Anyway, it's been the spark that I've been missing and it's rekindled my passion for learning Chinese. I've actually started reading another BL novel in Chinese by now.
It's hard to choose a favorite scene, but I concur that the scenes in Zhao Yunlan's apartment are shipping gold.

Haaai! Yay, you're here! *waves*

I'm still so incredibly impressed by/jealous of your language skills!

Relatable -- my sole motivation for learning Chinese (other than heritage reasons) is reading Chinese BL novels and fanfiction, whoops.

What novel are you reading right now, and is it any good?

I'm reading 魔道祖师. It's great because there is an ongoing translation available online which I checked a lot during the first few chapters, and then I got into the swing of things and mostly only read the Chinese version. I read on my ebook reader before going to sleep and so often can't be bothered to look anything up (names ;_;), so this way works well for me.
There's a recs post for Chinese BL novels here: https://fictional-fans.dreamwidth.org/11187.html

ETA: The novel is a page turner! Be aware that it's not exactly fluffy, though.

Oh, that's Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, right? (What a mouthful!) I started reading the translation a while back and really liked it but fell behind. I should give it a try again... after finishing Guardian-the-drama at the very least.

Thanks for both links, I'll check them out.

Sorry, this is getting more and more tangential

Yes, that's the one. I've finished just about the first third and wow, the story really doesn't pull its punches ;_;

The goodreads link really just includes an unorganized list of novels. I've seen [tumblr.com profile] foxghost mention they really liked this one: The Peach Blossom Debt (桃花债).

I've also found out that the (somewhat less good) TV series S.C.I 谜案部 is also based on a 耽美 novel series. I'm planning on checking that one out, as well. We'll see. Based on my current progress, I might get around to that next summer ;)

I actually have a hard copy of 桃花债, after I heard that a very popular cdrama my mom was watching was possibly based off of it. Unfortunately the difficulty of the novel is way over my head... I'm keeping it as motivation to learn more Chinese :P

I'm really surprised so many cdramas (i.e. any) are based off of 耽美 novels, even if they did take out the romance. You'd think they would instead say "no, gay stuff is banned, what are you even thinking?" And who even finds the novels in the first place?

That being said, I'm glad Guardian exists, it's so different from so many existing shows!

Initially, I also thought that I wouldn't be able to understand Guardian, or Modao Zushi, etc. I find that watching the adaption and reading parts of the translation really helped me get started. After a while, one sort of figures out the style and it gets easier, somehow, especially once you've looked up a few words that keep turning up again and again. (That list is quite long, for me. I didn't know so many words that are used all the time, like 仿佛, 闪, 皱眉... the list goes on and on.)

Ah, right, I also bookmarked this list of 耽美 novels on goodreads, no idea if that is something you'd find helpful/interesting:

Heeee! Really, you thought it was Nirvana in Fire? This is so interesting to me... there seems to be a huge fannish overlap between the two series, and I am still thinking about why that is.

The romance is so incredibly obvious, I thought that something like that would never make it onto a screen in China and in that format.

YES! I felt the same way! I know it's theoretically bromance, but - it is so not. The entire series revolves around the relationship, and it's so passionate and exclusive and romantic (and sexual too)... I honestly can't think of any on-screen m/m romance that has ever satisfied me more.

That's it exactly!
