Welcome to SID Guardian!

A banner for the SID_Guardian comm on Dreamwidth

Hi, and welcome to SID Guardian!

[community profile] sid_guardian is a noticeboard/community for:

  • linking Guardian fanworks of all kinds

  • linking to Guardian-related news (incl. info about the actors and their other roles) and meta (incl. serious meta, squee, picspams, episode reactions, writing-meta)

  • making Guardian recs, and

  • making fanworks-finder/rec-finder posts.

  • ETA: You can also post content directly to the comm.

Which is to say, it's for letting Guardian fans find each other on Dreamwidth. :)

Please link your Guardian-related posts here! Whether novel or drama, this is the place for it. Don't be shy, and please encourage other Guardian posters to link as well. You can also link to/rec things that have been posted by others.

As the comm develops, we hope to introduce social, discussion and/or prompt posts, but given it's December, we thought we'd start small and manageable.

To kick things off, if you feel like it, tell us a bit about how you ended up in Guardian fandom! Or let us know your favourite character or scene from Guardian, or what your power would be if you were Dixingren.

And remember, there's no tension that can’t be relieved with a lollipop. And if there is, try two lollipops.

Ooops, why did I skip the introductions?

My friend [personal profile] simboo who is into all kinds of Asian dramas got me hooked on Asian BL. At first I refused to watch Guardian, because *no textual BL*, but she kept raving and I caved and the rest is history. ;)

I still have misgivings about them never being able to kiss (argh, it pains me, every single scene!), but it is the first show I have ever seen where the romance is text and just not shown explicitly. It's the opposite of the US crap where they never commit - on Guardian they're doing everything they can and I love how different that is. It's (almost) enough for me.

I have not even finished watching (am now on ep 29), because a) it's so tragic and b) I don't want it to end.

My favorite scene is when Zhao Yunlan goes blind and the first thing he says is "Shen Wei?" and Shen Wei holds his hand and says "It's me." The absolute best!

Of course, once I started, I fell in love with Zhu Yilong. There is no getting out of this ditch anymore now.

I have made a Guardian rec post here: https://tinny.dreamwidth.org/514216.html

I speak a little Chinese (20 semesters of evening school didn't get me far, but I remember some things).

I am still looking for someone who speaks better Chinese than I to work together on translating some of the fic that keeps streaming into the Ao3. Especially the RPF stuff that nobody seems to be writing in English.

Anyone?

Hi! *waves*

I have not even finished watching (am now on ep 29), because a) it's so tragic and b) I don't want it to end.

Ahhh, I know that feeling! My viewing slowed dramatically around episode 30 too.

Yeah... but now I want to read naye's fic, so I have to continue at a somewhat higher pace again. :D

All the talk about these cool fics is making me want to hurry up and finish the drama, too... Can't wait until I'm on break!

I'm up for translating anything! Weilan is totally fine with me. But I don't speak Chinese well enough... :(

I can translate about 90% of any given fic using Google translate and doing manual fixes later, but there are just some phrases that escape me and I'd feel wrong selling that as a good translation. *sigh*

The other problem is that someone would have to choose which fics to translate. Someone who can read them at higher speed than I can and decide which ones are good.

I also suspect that there are many more good ones somewhere we can't get at them? The ao3 only has one extreme end of the bell curve, i.e. all the noncon, abo and rpf. I would like to think that there are more "mainstream" ones in the Chinese part of the fandom somewhere. I want to read (and translate) those! :D

Yes, maybe I should make a separate post about that here.

Is the AO3 stuff really all noncon, a/b/o and the like? Alas, not really my thing.

Yes, it skews heavily in that direction. Look at the tags. (And that's only the ones that are tagged, the rest is still noncon more likely than not.)

The worst one I found was for a strange pairing that looked interesting (they mix and match all of ZYL and BY's roles willy nilly), and it turns out it's straight up hentai tentacle rape and one of the characters only appears at the very end, saying "so how did you like the monster I made, nice rape, no?" O_O

I'm telling you, it's a pit.

I read somewhere else that many Chinese fanfic writers use AO3 for their smut that they don't feel safe to upload anywhere else ;)

Yes, they do.

Their main hub is lofter.com, it seems to be very similar to tumblr. It's completely unorganized and you can't find a thing in it, but authors post serialized fic there. (I can't even find the parts that belong together :( ) . For all the stuff they can't get through the censorship, they either take pictures and post it as an image (which is the worst because then there's no way to translate it at all anymore), or they post that snippet to ao3.

I mean, I am very sympathetic to their plight, let them all come to the archive! But maybe they should just post the whole story to the archive and not just snippets? And there should be an automatic way to fix not only the tags but the language, too?

I have been meaning to contact someone at the ao3 about this, so we could maybe write an automatic fix script for the language at least, because flagging the wrongly tagged fic with support and abuse is not getting us anywhere. But I have so many other things to do right now, it keeps slipping off the top of my todo list.

I have a feeling that Asian fandoms are heavy on the non-con, so there is no way around that, I'm afraid. I hate it, too.

I think it has to do with gender stereotypes, like non-con was the 1960s excuse for women being shown to have sex at all, and I think this applies here, too.

The thing that bothers me most is how those gender stereotypes are mapped onto slash as well - like "the taller person has to top", "the bottom has to hurt"... aargh. None of this is my thing, and finding good, consensual fic with the partners on relatively equal footing is like the needle in the haystack.
