Pic Spam: Episode 39 The Wrong Hei Pao Shi
I wanted to do a picspam of Ye Zun pretending to be Hei Pao Shi in episode 39. It’s one of my FAVORITE YE ZUN moments!!
Let us begin!
Here we have Zhao Yunlan in the bar noticing the arrival of Hei Pao Shi.
And then we see with the barest narrowing of Zhao Yunlan’s eyes that possibly just possibly something isn’t right :D
The first glimpse of Hei Pao Shi!!!
The music at this point has been very soft in the background but as soon as HPS steps into camera it plays super strong and intensely deep notes. I also like the drums they sound very militant (that’s how my brain interprets it!)
I think in these first few frames you know SOMETHING is wrong but the façade that Ye Zun presents doesn’t immediately strike as off? 
I really love this shot. It’s a little hard to tell but Ye Zun is stepping from the darker part of the bar and into the light, where Zhao Yunlan and the bartender (does he have a name? I wasn’t sure!) are at.
Going from darkness to light. I love it :D Same intense MUSIC.
Zhao Yunlan looks worried/concerned/uncertain to my brain here. The little furrows in his forehead, the slight upward tilt to his eyebrows.
Zhao Yunlan looks down. What do you think he’s thinking here? Does he know this isn’t Shen Wei.
Some kind of decision is made here, I think. 
Wide angle view again! Hei Pao Shi take the steps and Zhao Yunlan turns toward him.
The music really intensifies into SOMETHING TERRIBLE COMES THIS WAY. I love this shot of Hei Pao Shi looking downward.
Zhao Yunlan watches the approach of Hei Pao Shi.
Zhao Yunlan stands as he greets Hei Pao Shi and we focus on another pretty shot of Hei Pao Shi, looking down. (Admiral Ackbar just screaming in my head: IT'S A TRAP!)
LOOK AT THAT SMIRK LOOK AT IT. AND THE EYES AND THE EYES.
And here we see Ye Zun deciding to show who he really is.
Zhao Yunlan finds himself with a collar of dark energy. He doesn’t seem surprised to me. 
Predator eyes on full display here! And also 'I have won' eyes too :D Can I also say how much I love this shot too?! Such pleased smug cat expression for Ye Zun here.
The last pic of this pic spam! This pose is just so interesting to me. The casual aggressiveness in Ye Zun’s hand on Zhao Yunlan!

The smug cat look IS so chilling and it's played so well!
Oh, Zhao Yunlan's faaaaace when Hei Pao Shi first enters. I always think he has a tiny, irrational moment of hope -- could it be?! -- before reason kicks in and he knows it's not Hei Pao Shi. But I could also equally believe he knows immediately it's not Hei Pao Shi and his face is him reacting to the awfulness of Ye Zun pretending to be. - AHHH I have to agree that there's that irrational moment of HOPE of yes, is it him, before reason kicks in. Which is so heart-breaking!! Oh that makes me rethink when he looks down. Instead of deciding something, perhaps he's just composing himself!!

I feel like Zhao Yunlan realises immediately what's going on. He's deliberately lured Ye Zun here to take the booby-trapped Lantern, so I think all his reactions are about how to bluff and not give away that it was on purpose. (I love that he has a plan!) It probably hurts that Ye Zun is dressed up as Hei Pao Shi, but also, Zhao Yunlan is in so much pain about Shen Wei that he's probably kind of overloaded and can't even process it right now, is just doing what needs to be done? Idk.
As a viewer, I think I initially had a moment of hope, like, could this possibly be Shen Wei?? Is it a Gandalf-back-from-the-dead moment? But as soon as the music kicks in, it's clear that it's not, and I think visually, from the first hint of a smile, it's clearly Ye Zun.
Anyway, I love your caps, and especially how you've cropped them to really bring the characters into focus. <333

It's so wonderfully sinister! It always reminds me strongly of the Isengard theme from Lord of the Rings. :-)

But as soon as the music kicks in, it's clear that it's not, and I think visually, from the first hint of a smile, it's clearly Ye Zun. - I too had that initial hope, but once that music hit I was like: Welp, that is not HPS XD XD XD AND YES to Gandalf-back-from-the-dead moment, I love it :D
Anyway, I love your caps, and especially how you've cropped them to really bring the characters into focus. <333 - I'm so glad you enjoyed them LOLOL. Whenever my brain watches his show it's constantly yelling in caps about Ye Zun being false HPS XD I have to say again that the camera men and women and the directors/producers really set up shots so well in this show. Such great framing of characters and places!

When I was grabbing the screenshots I of course couldn't help but rewatch it and when the music came on my kiddo paused in what he was doing and asked: Are you watching a bad guy movie? Idk, I feel like seeing Ye Zun in Shen Wei's robes like this is really hard for him to handle in this moment? Like Ye Zun is gleefully rubbing it in. (Which he is!) And Zhao Yunlan needs a moment to pull himself together.

Yes I think so. He just watched Shen Wei be eaten, and even if he somehow escaped, why would he casually stroll in in Heipaoshi regalia? Into the trap Zhao Yunlan set specifically for Ye Zun, no less.
And as you said, Zhao Yunlan doesn’t seem surprised to be violently attacked by “Heipaoshi”.

I think he looks hurt. He knows it can't be Shen Wei, he knows it must be Ye Zun – he's deliberately set up this trap to lure Ye Zun here, even – but seeing Ye Zun like this has to be painful. I think he's really struggling at this moment, until he pulls himself together.

That is a great shot! - I LOVE this shot too. One of my faves. For one it shows the mask off so nicely and up close and also the hood! I know I struggle with hood draping when I'm drawing so having awesome close up shots rock. :D

I had mentioned in another reply that I rethought how I saw that scene after someone said something similar and it's SO TRUE. He is HURT and it's PAINFUL seeing Ye Zun pretend to be HPS. Which just makes me go MY HEART! :D And he for sure pulls himself together with that little downward look.
