Slo-Mo Rewatch: Guardian episode 5, part 2

Zhao Yunlan sprawled on a couch, grinning at his phone. The background shows a purple sky with stars. Text reads, "Slo-Mo Rewatch. Guardian - half an episode per week @ sid_guardian.dreamwidth.org"

Hi, welcome to this week's instalment of the Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch! Watch half an episode a week, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!

Here is last week's half-episode. On to the second half!

Episode 5, from 23:04

Summary: By the lakeside, Wu Xiaojun appears in front of his father, accuses him of wanting him dead, and reveals the truth of what happened to him. Wu Tian'en is shocked, but begs him to let the kidnapping victims go, and eventually convinces him he's sincere. They reconcile - only for Wu Tian'en to take an arrow for his son. Wu Xiaojun goes after Papa Huang, but Zhao Yunlan catches up with him and tells him to worry about his father. Guo Changcheng wants to use the Sundial to save Wu Tian'en; Zhao Yunlan takes it instead - but once the Sundial activates, the Envoy appears. Everyone begs the Envoy to save Wu Tian'en - Shen Wei notes the SID has changed.

Shen Wei, Wu Tian'en and Wu Xiaojun at the Dragon Gate

The Envoy takes Wu father and son to Dixing, has to immediately protect them from an attack by palace guards, and questions Wu Tian'en about what happened with the Dixing team he used to be a part of. Wu Tian'en knows nothing, but when the Envoy mentions the captain wasn't dead as he thought, he tells the Envoy the captain's wife was pregnant.

In Haixing, in the SID lab, the Sundial projects an image of the Mountain-River Awl, Shen Wei has moved into Zhao Yunlan's building, and Guo Changcheng tries to learn how to tail someone from Chu Shuzhi. And we head into the next case - where there is another bathroom disappearance, and Guo Changcheng very reasonably wonders if Wu Xiaojun has returned. *g* Zhou Weiwei's fiancé remembers her fighting with a woman in their bathroom, except then the woman disappeared. And now she has disappeared too.

Quote:

Chu Shuzhi: "Since time began, no matter the country, or whether human or not, wherever creatures live in groups there will always be a hierarchy. And that is why there will always be killing and oppression."

Detail:

Wu Xiaojun's ring (this case's significant jewellery representing his connection with his father) gets thrown away twice.

The first time, he himself throws it into the lake as "proof" that he doesn't care about his father - but in the scene following their reconciliation, he promptly has it back.

The second time, in that very scene where see he has it back, Huang Chaoyang takes it away again, mocks its worthlessness and throws it into the pool. But again, in the following scenes - at the SID (though it's hard to see there), and in Dixing - Wu Xiaojun promptly has it back. :D

Questions:

What's your favourite moment in this part of the episode? What happened to little Wu Xiaojun after he was abandoned? How does Zhu Jiu find all these people? Do you think the Huang and Li fathers suffered any consequences for what they did? Do you think it's meaningful which of the SID members beg the Envoy to save Wu Xiaojun (Guo Changcheng, Lin Jing, Zhao Yunlan), and which don't speak up (Zhu Hong, Chu Shuzhi, Da Qing)? Is there anything in the Wu Xiaojun case that comes from the novel? Why is Zhao Yunlan suddenly insisting on jogging? Is Guo Changcheng uniquely bad at tailing people, or are Chu Shuzhi and Zhao Yunlan bad at teaching him? How many different kinds of bathroom disappearances can there be?

(These are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in!)

And here is our new schedule for the next batch of episodes - please do sign up to host a post if you can!

I forgot to mention in my comment -- great choice of pic! The Dragon Gate, so cool!! This is our first glimpse of Dixing, isn't it? So the first-time viewer doesn't know yet that it's always dark.

Wu Tian'en is so glad to see his son

He really is!! It's so heartbreaking to see him so happy, and his son so angry.

All his reactions mirror Ye Zun's reactions to Shen Wei so much, thinking him guilty, seeing any care for anyone else as proof that they themselves have never mattered ... even the laugh is a less extreme mirror of Ye Zun's.

Yes! It's such a good parallel.

I'm confused, because the earlier conversation between him and Papa Li said they were Papa Li's goons, but now it sounds like they're his. Maybe he sent more goons after them, and they took shifts. :p

Maybe they co-own a private security firm? (I wrote a fic where the Li family did, anyway.)

And then Wu Xiaojun goes after Papa Huang, and that guy turns out to be a) ingenious, using electricity against him, b) even more awful and cruel than we already knew he was, as we see him laughing at Wu Xiaojun, mocking him before he gets his goon to beat him up.

Yes, that was so awful! So very Rebel Chief. /o\

I do wonder how that little arrow left Wu Tian'en in the condition he ends up in. Is it poisoned?

Either poisoned or it hits him in a vital organ? (I think Dixingren generally avoid Haixing hospitals, don't they?)

and Chu Shuzhi, who is sitting in the background but watching intently - still separate from the rest of the SID. So fascinating!

Right? I was very aware of him sitting back and watching. I wonder if he's waiting for ZYL to hand over Wu Xiaojun to be delivered to the Envoy...

And Zhao Yunlan isn't just affected by it all, but goes so far as to personally take the Sundial and try to use it on Wu Tian'en - the chief of the SID trying to save a Dixingren.

I feel like ZYL is like, he knows he can't let Xiao Guo do it (because ZYL has to protect him from the consequences), and then he realises/accepts that it has to be done... by him. For ZYL, the SID chief's role is to protect everyone, but it's not until Xiao Guo shows him that "everyone" includes everyone that he gets it. Or something like that. :-)

And we have our first "is it worth it?" scene

Our second, I think? There's the Li Qian & Shen Wei conversation in ep 1.

then Xiao-Guo speaks up (of course!), and then Lin Jing follows Xiao-Guo's lead.

How do you know it's Xiao-Guo? I've just watched it a few times, and I can't see him asking. His lips move but I don't think I can see him actually speaking -- I think it's just the end of a grimace of self-control.

And of course that's true, except it's not literally true, because those words have crossed his lips, right here in episode 5. Where asking that question isn't actually about whether it's worth it or not, but about Zhao Yunlan's stance towards Dixingren.

Ha, yes. Good catch. I think he's really saying, "We never ask ourselves if it's worth it." Not "we never ask other people/each other."

Now, we know the Wu Tian'en and Zhou Weiwei cases have a connection through Wu Tian'en's old team captain who was mirrror!Weiwei's father - but how the hell did Zhu Jiu figure that out, and what exactly is his plan that connects the two? I honestly have no idea right now.

Ohh, do you think that Ye Zun could have originally arranged for the Hallows to go missing, a hundred years ago, and then had agents in the search team? Or someone back then who knew what was going on and arranged for the Youchu to escape? Or something like that?

Also delightful, and I don't think I ever paid attention to this before: it's Da Qing who questions Ji Xiaobai, and he's taking notes! Actually working, good kitty! :D

Yes, ditto! I wonder why ZYL delegated that to him...

and 1) we know the Envoy does take people away but lets them stay in Haixing anyway, as seen with Wang Yike

Yes, but it's not ZYL's fault he doesn't know that -- it's supposed to be a secret. And I don't think he knows enough about the Regent yet to have an opinion about him?

Dixingren might, but why would the SID? Or why wouldn't they get a doctor?

The SID might not be allowed to take Dixingren to civilian institutions. I wouldn't be surprised if that was forbidden, especially given ZXC would have had a hand in writing up their rules. And it seems like Lin Jing has enough medical expertise that a doctor would be redundant.

And then the Envoy comes and he immediately drops his feet from the desk and stands up! ♥

Yes!! :D :D :D

The camera is still on Shen Wei when Xiao-Guo speaks, but I can hear his voice.

I'm impressed by your ear! I honestly can't tell one semi-whispered plea from another. /o\

I think Ye Zun was already after the Hallows back then

I wondered if Ye Zun might have tried getting rid of them in an attempt to weaken the seal/pillar. But otoh, he might not have been conscious/communicating until after they were lost...

Maybe the youchu attack was arranged so the captain could go off on his own and bring the Awl to Ye Zun

Maybe! But oof, that's pretty cold. /o\

It looks to me like that's nothing unusual for either of them, tbh, so there wouldn't need to be a special reason.

He hasn't even been present for an interview before now. It seems new to me -- I think it's part of ZYL getting his team in shape.

Yes, I wasn't implying it was ZYL's fault! Just that there's a lot going on that he isn't aware of yet. He doesn't have the full picture, and that influences his views on things/people.

Oh right. Yes, absolutely. It's so great seeing him get better. :D

"And with Wu Tian'en revealing the captain's wife was pregnant, we lead into the next case, hee! Great transition."

So, who is this captain? Surely not the grocer with the pregnant wife?

I can't see what Ye Zun and his minion are hoping to achieve through these various cases they claim to be setting in motion. Are they just trying to rile people up against HPS/Haixing/SID?

I don't suppose it would be very hard for someone with power over water to find his ring after it had been thrown into his element.

Finally, Zhao Yunlan again: "Ordinary person or Dixingren, a person is a person."

I guess I'm just struggling to notice references to the Hallows in some of the cases - I guess I get caught up in the action/personal relations and miss things!

Some of the cases, like the Shadow Man, are going very directly after the Hallows. I think others, like Wang Yike, are Zhu Jiu auditioning people for henchperson/minion status, or in the case of the face-stealer couple, using them to target the SID.

I don't suppose it would be very hard for someone with power over water to find his ring after it had been thrown into his element.

Ha, true!

Yes!!!! I love that he gets there just in the space of 5 episodes! :D :D :D

Yay, great post!! :D

1. This is really from last week, but: I wonder where Wu Tian'en went without his son. He's packed as if for quite a long trip, and Huang Snr says he came back early. Is he involved in the Huang business, rather than just being a butler?

2. Changcheng: Chief was even able to guess that he can travel through water! I really want to know how he deduced it.
me: He asked Shen Wei on the phone call.
(I kind of love Changcheng being impressed like this makes CSZ grumpy -- it plays into my little subtext headcanon about CSZ being jealous of Shen Wei usurping him as ZYL's partner. Heh.)

3. Wu Xiaojun calls the kidnapped couple Romeo and Juliet even though their marriage was literally arranged by their parents. ;-p

4. Changcheng is so brave and determined to use the Dial. I love him! And then ZYL is spurred to do it himself, even though he's scared too. *hearts so much* I also love that yelling at the Dial wakes it up. :D

5. ZYL: "A person is a person."
me: \o/ \o/ \o/

6. Shen Wei brings yet another person back from the brink of death! \o/

7. In Dixing, the guards are murderous, but Shen Wei still has to take Xiaojun to the palace? That doesn't seem right.

8. The VIKI subs say, "Among the many Dixingren, some harbor malicious intentions. Even the Dijun's Palace has been infiltrated by them. They aim to silence you." Original subs: "Among the many Dixing people, some harbour malicious intentions. Even the Palace is affected. They aimed to kill the witness." My question: witness to what? Silence why? Is this so SW won't find out about the Youchu attack on the search party, or is it something else? (Presumably he already knew Youchu had escaped to Haixing, since he was the one who banished them.) And if the captain was shot dead in Haixing, does that mean Zhao Xinci did it?

9. The Dial randomly generates an image of the Awl. Awww, it's lonely!

10. Why is Shen Wei assuming the captain's descendant is in Haixing, not Dixing? *confused*

11. It looks to me like Weiwei got up in the night to have a shower? Weirdo.

12. Jogging, yay! I think this is partly spurred on by the increase in cases, and ZYL's need to shape up. I wonder if he's also dragging Da Qing along because DQ's being taken hostage last episode shook ZYL up more than he'll admit.

13. I don't understand Da Qing thinking (in voice over) "How hard can it be to find an address?" as if it's significant. It would have felt much more natural if he'd just muttered it aloud.

14. While training Changcheng, CSZ goes into a shop with a "Happy Valentine's Day" sign in the window. LOL, he must have stuck out like a sore thumb in there! :D :D :D

15. SO MANY BATHROOMS!! Also, Ji Xiaobai saying "she hates sunlight" sounds so suspicious to me, and I don't know if it's just because I know about the shadow thing.

16. CSZ's philosophy is so pessimistic. I wonder what Shen Wei would say if he heard CSZ saying that?!

What's your favourite moment in this part of the episode?

Changcheng determinedly getting the Dial to save WTE, and ZYL throwing himself on that grenade. I love a) GCC having this direct influence on the attitudes at the SID, and b) both of them trying so hard to be good and self-sacrificing. "Guarding" as GCC wrote in his diary in ep 3.

What happened to little Wu Xiaojun after he was abandoned?

I don't want to think about it; the Ye Zun analogy is too real. /o\

Do you think the Huang and Li fathers suffered any consequences for what they did?

I always wonder. Li Snr was at the wedding...

Do you think it's meaningful which of the SID members beg the Envoy to save Wu Xiaojun (Guo Changcheng, Lin Jing, Zhao Yunlan), and which don't speak up (Zhu Hong, Chu Shuzhi, Da Qing)?

Oh, I didn't notice that! Only the humans plead for Wu Tian'en! I'm guessing CSZ doesn't believe in asking the Envoy for anything or trying to influence him, and Da Qing says something flippant about mortality at the start of the next episode so maybe he's more matter of fact about death. I'm surprised by Zhu Hong, though...

Is Guo Changcheng uniquely bad at tailing people, or are Chu Shuzhi and Zhao Yunlan bad at teaching him?

LOL! Both? I think CSZ and ZYL expect so little of him that they don't really bother tailoring their teaching methods to their pupil.

How many different kinds of bathroom disappearances can there be?

HEE! <3

1. He came back earlier than expected, so he must have had a fair degree of autonomy, whatever it was.

LOL! You're not wrong, but also, I really don't think it's hard to guess at this point!

I think it depends how used you are to the laws of physics being mutable. I think even ZYL is still getting his head around what's possible?

But either way I can definitely see him think "I could have told him/you that too!" Aw.

Ha, yes. *pets CSZ*

3. Oh, thanks! I really should check other subs before assuming it's a literal translation. /o\

I think the guards aren't actually working for the palace, they've been suborned/brainwashed/are under Ye Zun's control. They're actively stopping the Envoy from bringing the Wus to the palace, after all. If it was the palace itself, they wouldn't need to catch them in the street.

True, I guess. (The palace is a bad enough prospect without it being full of Ye Zun's soldiers!!)

I've been thinking about that, and I think it has to be connected to the clue for the Awl that the mirror girl will remember from her father.

Ohhh, that makes a lot of sense! Thanks! And yes, good point about Xiaojun being recruited, too.

I thought after hearing about this from Wu Tian'en, he'd look into the family in Dixing, find nothing, and then conclude the father - who was hiding on the surface at that point - got his family to join him.

That makes sense. I am very vague and handwavy about all of this, tbh. None of the logic stays in my head. /o\

I don't see the difference between thinking it and saying it out loud?

I think voice-over thoughts are usually ~significant~ -- like SW thinking about the price of his powers in ep 14, for example. Whereas muttered asides can be anything, like Lin Jing muttering about being left behind at the Huang house. I can't think of any other voice-over thoughts that are just throw-away lines -- can you?

Maybe they have goth valentines!

LOL!

but Papa Huang wasn't, which does stand out a bit. Maybe they managed to pin it on him at least.

He was the most obviously involved. I can imagine Li Snr weaseling out of it with an expensive lawyer. /o\

I keep telling myself I'll catch up with the rewatch, but fall further and further behind! Woe me.

The Envoy takes Wu father and son to Dixing, has to immediately protect them from an attack by palace guards

I love the foil here of Shen Wei noting the SID/Haixing has changed for the better, only to be confronted with the ways Dixing has become increasingly corrupted soon after.

Do you think the Huang and Li fathers suffered any consequences for what they did?

No.

Do you think it's meaningful which of the SID members beg the Envoy to save Wu Xiaojun (Guo Changcheng, Lin Jing, Zhao Yunlan), and which don't speak up (Zhu Hong, Chu Shuzhi, Da Qing)?

Oooh, great question! Interesting that the three speaking up are exactly the humans. Chu Shuzhi would be hesitant to tell Heipaoshi what to do I guess. Are the Yashou too jaded to expect help from Dixing's Envoy? Or too proud to be begging?

Why is Zhao Yunlan suddenly insisting on jogging?

He wants to show off his new jogging gear. Looks handsome indeed!

Is Guo Changcheng uniquely bad at tailing people, or are Chu Shuzhi and Zhao Yunlan bad at teaching him?

Kinda both. Xiao-Guo is ill-suited, but they could make him at least a decent tail by patiently teaching him. Neither of them has that patience (or likes to explain anything to the newbie in general).

Clearly you need to marathon Guardian

Don't tempt me!

it's always great to see your comments here!

Thank you, kind of you to say♥️
I really need to get caught up though...

Yeah, the only reason I think maybe at least something might have stuck to Huang Senior is because he's not at the wedding.

I'm assuming nothing happened since it isn't brought up. And it would be the typical "justice" for Dixingren in Haixing.

with Zhu Hong, I'm really not sure.

She is the odd one, isn't she? Da Qing is frequently blasé about death, Chu Shuzhi would keep his mouth shut and defer to Heipaoshi - neither of those apply to her.
Possibly we're all overthinking, and they just wanted to limit the amount of characters speaking up. For scene composition, or something XD

Haha, I always think it looks so silly

Not mutually exclusive! His clothes definitely look new, I bet he's very proud having bought them :P

Ooh, that's such a great point! Oh dear.

Are the Yashou too jaded to expect help from Dixing's Envoy? Or too proud to be begging?

It could be that the Yashou Tribes don't have a direct relationship with the Envoy of Dixing? But I was surprised Zhu Hong wasn't speaking up...

He wants to show off his new jogging gear. Looks handsome indeed!

Hee!

Xiao-Guo is ill-suited, but they could make him at least a decent tail by patiently teaching him. Neither of them has that patience (or likes to explain anything to the newbie in general).

Yeah, I think that's a fair reading. At least, as Trobadora says, Chu Shuzhi gets better...

Hi, you! So good to see you here. :D

Hello! Glad to be back🙋‍♀️

But I was surprised Zhu Hong wasn't speaking up...

It's so weird for her in particular, right? I've posted the same thing just above replying to Trobadora (sorry for recycling answers, haha), but I've started to wonder if they just wanted to limit the amount of characters speaking up for the flow of the scene. Doesn't help us in-universe, of course...

(At this point I may need to accept that I'm not in this comm as much as I used to, at least for now?? xD HI THO. :D :D ♡♡♡)

- THE JOGGING. :D :D Zhao Yunlan praising his crush whether it's relevant or not (Da Qing is probably all 'damn, everything he talks about has to be connected to Shen Wei' xD) and running into him immediately afterwards. xD

- Btw, tumblr post: “what do you think shen wei is after” says the man shen wei is after :D :D (Just this text + caps from the scene.)

- Also Zhao Yunlan calling anyone Da Qing shameless. xD xD

- Zhao Yunlan admiring himself in the mirror and stroking his mustache is one of my favorite tiny scenes ever. :D :D I've had caps of it for a long time. xD

- And Zhao Yunlan plonking down on the toilet, but honestly I don't think it's that big of a deal, it's closed. xD (I really, really like what he's doing with his hands in this scene btw. ♡__♡) I find it weirder that he sits on the coffee table right next to the tea set and fruit bowl, lmao - in addition to being pretty weird in itself, it's also immediately after sitting on the toilet. xD

- Shen Wei's first instance of 'Zhao Yunlan, you don't get to die, stop touching the Hallows'. xD How panicked must he be to just portal himself right away! (I wonder what he was doing, and how easy it was to excuse himself. ;D) And then he went back to this topic after Wu Tian'en was saved (the voiceover when Zhao Yunlan wants to touch the Dial again is not from the original scene).

- And Zhao Yunlan cares SO MUCH. His small smile when Wu Tian'en is saved!

- The way CSZ and Zhao Yunlan sneak up on Xiao Guo is honestly very impressive, I would be confused too. xD

- Btw Xiao Guo is asking the right question about Wu Xiaojun! They only just had people disappearing from locked bathrooms, it has to be talked about, even if it's obvious to everyone else that it would be very hard for him to come back.

- "She hates sunlight" is about the original Weiwei, right? (Dixingren Weiwei would be a big fan of sunlight, I'm assuming.)

- I'm so glad y'all have pointed out the Shen Wei & Ye Zun parallels because it has never occurred to me before and it's SO PERFECT, especially Wu Xiaojun living most of his life 'knowing' that he was abandoned by his only family when he wasn't.

- Why were they using arrows instead of guns? Did they think/know that a gun wouldn't work? (But then why did they think that an arrow would work?)

- And btw Xiao Guo isn't trying to suck up to Zhao Yunlan who isn't even there, he's genuinely impressed. xD

- What did Huang Sr want from Wu Xiaojun's ring at the pool? He's rich enough, does he still have to steal people's jewelry? Or did he think it had special properties? But it doesn't look like that because 1) he wouldn't want it to have special properties (literally that's the reason he hates Wu Xiaojun - because he's not a 'normal person') but he didn't look afraid at all or like he was protecting himself, 2) he couldn't possibly be able to tell that just from looking at it, and he immediately deemed it worthless, so it looks like he was only checking for monetary value. Could he have other reasons to try to take the ring? Is it just 'it's probably something important to Wu Xiaojun, I can be an asshole about it'?

"(this case's significant jewellery representing his connection with his father)"

Ooooh, another theme to pay attention to. :D (I haven't thought of it before, other than in Li Qian's storyline.)

"But again, in the following scenes - at the SID (though it's hard to see there), and in Dixing - Wu Xiaojun promptly has it back. :D"

Oh yay, I didn't catch that he got it back!

"What's your favourite moment in this part of the episode?"

Jogging! :D

"What happened to little Wu Xiaojun after he was abandoned?"

I'm assuming he was just all alone and fending for himself (and clearly not understanding what happened, which only made it worse).

"How does Zhu Jiu find all these people?"

Lol, I love this question, I wish I had an answer. :D He sure has an endless supply of Dixingren in Haixing to observe and recruit! (Were they all sent/helped by Ye Zun and that's how he knows about them?)

"Do you think the Huang and Li fathers suffered any consequences for what they did?"

Damn, I hope sooooo, but I think it's unlikely.

"Do you think it's meaningful which of the SID members beg the Envoy to save Wu Xiaojun (Guo Changcheng, Lin Jing, Zhao Yunlan), and which don't speak up (Zhu Hong, Chu Shuzhi, Da Qing)?"

I think CSZ would never tell the Envoy what to do, but with the others idk. GCC is obvious, and Zhao Yunlan in this scene is obvious too, but Lin Jing is about as likely to speak up as Zhu Hong or Da Qing, so some of it feels more random than meaningful.

"Is there anything in the Wu Xiaojun case that comes from the novel?"

I think it's only the reveal that the Netherworld/Dixing doesn't like Shen Wei all that much. (But I may be missing something obvious!)

"Why is Zhao Yunlan suddenly insisting on jogging?"

I think what he says to Da Qing is the main reason, but also trying to get even hotter for his new crush. xD As if he wasn't already 12/10 (in general and to Shen Wei in particular, lol), but he's down bad and he's trying to improve his chances anyway. xD

"Is Guo Changcheng uniquely bad at tailing people, or are Chu Shuzhi and Zhao Yunlan bad at teaching him?"

I think he's too earnest to be sneaky, and (paradoxically) too concentrated to pay attention, so maybe he's not just suited for it. But they probably don't try to play to his strengths either, so in the end it's both. :P

"How many different kinds of bathroom disappearances can there be?"

Lol, with basically infinitely many powers (it doesn't even have to be water-related at all, as this case shows) - A LOT! xD

"*weeps* We miss you! HI!"

AWWWWW! ♡♡♡♡♡ *clings* (I'm honestly regrouping a bit re: where my fannish time/energy goes, and I may just not always be the best fit for this rewatch? But at the same time I absolutely love that it's a thing that exists, and without the previous rewatch I literally never would have found Guardian, so there's no way I'm going to disappear completely. :D :D)

"Every road leads to Shen Wei! :D"

:D :D And poor Da Qing needs to listen to that all day. ;D

"It's really delightful! I love how they use the mirror before it becomes obvious that it's plot-relevant. :D"

Oooh true, I didn't even realize that! I was very focused on the pretty. xD :D

"Yeah, seriously, I've never understood why people think this is noteworthy, and I agree sitting on the table next to the tea set is weirder! *high five*"

*high five* :D Bai Yu shrugged it off too. xD

"There's so much more tied up with it here, though - not least awe that Zhao Yunlan would want to go this far to save a Dixingren, this early. And that the SID cares about Dixingren lives now. I feel like all of that really drowns out the worry about Zhao Yunlan here."

He only finds all of that out later though - the reason he show ups at all is because Zhao Yunlan is using the Dial, isn't it?

"I always wonder about that in general! Especially with smoke messengers being a thing - it's not just that sometimes he needs to leave quickly, but he can also get summoned or receive messages in a way that would really give him away if he doesn't catch it quickly enough and wave off the messenger."

Maybe he can make the messages invisible preemptively, like switching a phone to vibrate. xD

"I think it's really fun the way they lampshade it that they have two bathroom cases one after the other. :D"

Hee, yes, and it's both lampshading and explaining to the viewer who goes 'oh, it's that guy again' that it can't be that guy after all. :P

"No, it's Dixingren Weiwei, the Mirror Girl who doesn't have a shadow."

Ahhh, thanks, I totally forgot about the shadow!

"I was wondering if they had some kind of Dixingren-specific poison, either because they already knew there were "monsters" and had been prepared, or because Zhu Jiu got involved somehow."

Oh, that would make sense! Now I'm wondering if they did enough research on "monsters" to bump into Professor Ouyang somehow.

"Yes, of course! Lao-Chu is so grumpy, LOL."

Now I'm thinking that 'you're not actually this pure cinnamon roll, you're just trying to suck up to someone' could be a reference to novel CSZ asking what Xiao Guo is cultivating for, not believing that he just is LIKE THAT, without any ulterior motives. :P

"Yeah, that's it, IMO. He was just trying to be as cruel as possible, taking a treasured possession away while mocking it. Possibly he remembered Wu Xiaojun having it as a kid?"

Oh, true! For some reason I assumed that he didn't know what Wu Xiaojun was holding, but this scene works equally well if it's a familiar ring and he wants to get his hands on it.

"Wu Tian'en wasn't, we know about him, and I think he and his son got tracked down specifically because they were on that team 20-some years ago? With the others, no clue. My theory is that at least some of the young men were recruited through the underground fighting ring, but for many I have no idea."

Yep, other than the Wu family. Some of the people (especially most recently Wang Yike and Jia Hui) don't look to me like they would have the means or confidence or courage to get to Haixing by any means other than begging Ye Zun. (Or begging someone else, I guess, but then the 'how does Zhu Jiu know they exist' question is back. :P)

"Clearly this fandom needs more bathroom disappearance cases. *g*"

There's also Ye Zun's bathroom bullshit. xD

There's so much more tied up with it here, though - not least awe that Zhao Yunlan would want to go this far to save a Dixingren, this early. And that the SID cares about Dixingren lives now. I feel like all of that really drowns out the worry about Zhao Yunlan here.

Yeah, me too. (And for all the warnings, I don't think anyone completely realises how dangerous the Hallows can be, not even Shen Wei -- after all, Kunlun was touching them confidently in YOHE.)

I was wondering if they had some kind of Dixingren-specific poison, either because they already knew there were "monsters" and had been prepared, or because Zhu Jiu got involved somehow.

Would Zhu Jiu be helping Huang Sr? Isn't Wu Xiaojun one of his recruits?

Clearly this fandom needs more bathroom disappearance cases. *g*

Hee! <3

(At this point I may need to accept that I'm not in this comm as much as I used to, at least for now?? xD HI THO. :D :D ♡♡♡)

*CLINGS* <3 <3 <3

- THE JOGGING. :D :D Zhao Yunlan praising his crush whether it's relevant or not (Da Qing is probably all 'damn, everything he talks about has to be connected to Shen Wei' xD) and running into him immediately afterwards. xD

Hee! Yes. It's such a gratuitous little scene (how can we have ZYL find out Shen Wei has moved into his building?), and I love it! :D :D :D

That tumblr post is excellent! :D

Zhao Yunlan admiring himself in the mirror and stroking his mustache is one of my favorite tiny scenes ever. :D :D I've had caps of it for a long time. xD

:D :D :D :D :D

I don't think the toilet sitting is particularly weird, either. I had to go back and watch what he's doing with his hands, though, and a;sdlkfjasd;lfkjas;lfkjasfk yessss. :D :D :D :D

Oh hey, I just realised Shen Wei says, "What's more, do you know how to use the Longevity Dial to renew a dead person's life?" -- foreshadowing their need for instructions in ep 22? Clearly the Hallows need to come with operating instructions. ;D

How panicked must he be to just portal himself right away! (I wonder what he was doing, and how easy it was to excuse himself. ;D)

I wonder if they could have summoned him before the scene starts? They must have planned to do something with Wu Xiaojun and his dad. (Great point about the voice over, yeah.)

- And Zhao Yunlan cares SO MUCH. His small smile when Wu Tian'en is saved!

Yes! He's so relieved!! <3

- The way CSZ and Zhao Yunlan sneak up on Xiao Guo is honestly very impressive, I would be confused too. xD

LOL, right?

- "She hates sunlight" is about the original Weiwei, right? (Dixingren Weiwei would be a big fan of sunlight, I'm assuming.)

I assume Dixingren Weiwei "hates" sunlight only because it reveals her lack of shadow.

- Why were they using arrows instead of guns? Did they think/know that a gun wouldn't work? (But then why did they think that an arrow would work?)

Maybe guns are just less common in Haixing? Heh, yeah, Idk.

I think Huang Snr was just being a dick and taking something that was obviously precious to Wu Xiaojun. Also, mocking Wu Xiaojun for caring about something that isn't monetarily valuable. ;-p

I'm assuming he was just all alone and fending for himself (and clearly not understanding what happened, which only made it worse).

Yeah, such a sad story. :-(

but Lin Jing is about as likely to speak up as Zhu Hong or Da Qing, so some of it feels more random than meaningful.

I was thinking about this some more -- I wonder if it's partly about who has father/family issues. Da Qing seems to have no memory of a family, and Zhu Hong gets on well with her uncle. Lin Jing is estranged -- maybe that makes the "long-lost family member dying in front of Xiaojun" thing hit harder?

but also trying to get even hotter for his new crush. xD

LOL! *hearts*

♡♡♡♡♡!!

"I had to go back and watch what he's doing with his hands, though, and a;sdlkfjasd;lfkjas;lfkjasfk yessss. :D :D :D :D"

:D :D :D GLAD I COULD SHARE. :> :D ♡_____♡

"I wonder if they could have summoned him before the scene starts? They must have planned to do something with Wu Xiaojun and his dad."

It doesn't look to me like they've been waiting for him, especially CSZ, but honestly I think this scene is one of the topics I'll need to drop if I want to keep doing the rewatch. :) (Which I do! ♡♡♡) I just have vastly different interpretations and squicks and especially things that make me happy about Weilan than what the general consensus here is, and I originally thought it mostly just applied to the ending, but in these early episodes I already keep holding back more and more of what I actually liked (because there's no point getting defensive, especially when no one is actually right or wrong), so basically agree to disagree on, like, a lot of Weilan? ♡ Absolutely no hard feelings, and there are many other things to talk about. :D

"I assume Dixingren Weiwei "hates" sunlight only because it reveals her lack of shadow."

Yepppp definitely, I forgot about the shadow thing, that's a very good reason to avoid sunlight. xD

"I think Huang Snr was just being a dick and taking something that was obviously precious to Wu Xiaojun. Also, mocking Wu Xiaojun for caring about something that isn't monetarily valuable. ;-p"

Yep, now that I realized that he probably knew exactly what he was taking, it all makes sense to me! For some reason I thought he actually wanted to find out what Wu Xiaojun was holding, and I couldn't figure out why (other than a potential weapon, but he doesn't look like he's expecting it to be one).

"I was thinking about this some more -- I wonder if it's partly about who has father/family issues. Da Qing seems to have no memory of a family, and Zhu Hong gets on well with her uncle. Lin Jing is estranged -- maybe that makes the "long-lost family member dying in front of Xiaojun" thing hit harder?"

Ohhh, this sounds like a very good explanation! (I clearly forgot something tho - how do we know that Lin Jing is estranged?)
