Pic Spam: Hei Pao Shi in Plain Sight
For this particular pic spam, I’m going to focus on the first episode - though I'd like to do all the earlier episodes prior to the identity reveal - where we catch a glimpse of Hei Pao Shi peeking out from beneath.
I am going to start us off with a non-HPS pic, but one of my fave pics in the first episode of Professor Shen Wei :D

Okay okay time for some HPS hiding in plain sight 😊
PS: These are chronologically in order in episode 1! :D
This particular picture for my brain screams

Slightly less YOHE HPS as he pets Da Qing and Zhao Yunlan speaks to him.

Pensive HPS as he reads the SID files!

HPS is feeling sus as he chats with Li Qian or as I mentally tagged the pic sus HPS :D

This is where Shen Wei is chatting with Zhao Yunlan to try and keep Zhao Yunlan’s suspicion off of Li Qian. During the whole conversation he’s all smiles/innocent Professor Shen Wei and in this moment, where he asks if Dixing and Haixing people are so different, his face to me becomes very serious.
Sus HPS again!
Shen Wei meets up with Li Qian at the school and helps her pick up her dropped papers/books. In the midst of it he senses something wrong/off/the sundial or the shadow man? Possibly both!!
Li Qian shows the sundial to Shen Wei/HPS. The shadow man finally manifests as well!
THEY RUN! And out comes SERIOUS HPS!!

HPS listens for the approach/to the approach of the shadow man.

HPS comforts Li Qian.

There’s the whole fight with the shadow man before they go to the roof, but the screen captures were super blurry, but know there was a lot of jaw clenching HPS showing during it!
They are on the rooftop!
You shall not pass HPS!
A close of of HPS eyes :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
OH no HPS realizes they are no longer alone! Time to abort HPS eyes!
And for our final picture a nice little team shot. We just need Zhu Hong to make it complete!
Some points to ponder:
- What is your favorite HPS peeking through moment? Any episode not just the first!
- Did I forget any moments in episode 1? There were so many good moments that weren't just HPS eyes!
- Do people think there's more HPS peeking through moments prior to the identity reveal? After? Or maybe a similar amount in pre/post reveal?
I love rewatching the episodes to search for clips and nuances and every time I rewatch them I always feel like i'm finding something new :D
I hope everyone enjoys these pics!! :D

His side eye is chef's kiss I totes agree!!! I made Guardian recruitment slides for DC Slash last year and showed them again at this year's REVELCon, and for the last slide I explained that this is Zhao Yunlan threatening the bad guy with his dark energy gun, and Shen Wei threatening the bad guy with the power of side-eye. And now, thanks to the insights in this picspam, I realize that's HPS peeking out through Shen Wei's eyes!!!

Thank you for the lovely comment!

The threatening side-eyes are my favourite expression on him. I like most the one he does at the wedding in ep 13 ❤

Ohhh, yes, that's fantastic and totally iconic!! :D :D :D

P.S./ A few of my favorite peek-through moments:
Episode 13 (as other comments mentioned!)
Episode 3 when Wang Yike's touch doesn't affect him and he walks forward
Episode 15 when he loses it over the Regent reporting that the Dijun Register is lost
Episode 18 when he has his blade pointed at Yehuo
no subject
YESSSS that little step forward is amazing!
And I love everything about him unleashing his anger at the Regent. :D

Ohhh, yes! Glorious! *rewatches* (And for that matter, when he confronts Ye Huo in the street, before Ye Huo motorbikes away, he starts out in his robes, but then switches to his Haixing suit without stopping being the Envoy. ♥ ♥ ♥)

AND YES to all the favorite peek-through moments you listed. I especially love the episode 3 one AND episode 15 :D Those are some excellent excellent moments!!

Hee! That would be an amazing project. I'd love to see that! So many moments that deserve focus!
I love all the moments you pulled out for this, all the subtle changes in his expression. I'm always especially fond of the ones without his glasses, so that one is a favourite. But also his sideways look at Zhao Yunlan who's watching him and Li Qian, that's a great moment.
In the midst of it he senses something wrong/off/the sundial or the shadow man?
The shot immediately before is of the Sundial, so I always assumed that that was the moment he first saw and immediately recognised Li Qian's pendant. I don't think the Shadow Man arrives until a few lines later.
You shall not pass HPS!
YES THIS! Shen Wei on the rooftop preparing to compromise his secret identity to protect Li Qian is such a fabulous moment!
What is your favorite HPS peeking through moment? Any episode not just the first!
I'm exceedingy fond of the entire interrogation scene in episode 4. But also, for a small underrated moment, there's the bit in episode 2 when the attacker in Li Qian's hospital room goes after him. And at first he just stands very still, looking down and not reacting while the guy attacks him – and then he lifts his eyes ...
Do people think there's more HPS peeking through moments prior to the identity reveal? After? Or maybe a similar amount in pre/post reveal?
I think as the show progresses, the lines blur more and more, and as Shen Wei starts no longer keeping his roles separate, it becomes less HPS peeking through and more him no longer keeping a barrier between the different aspects of everything that he is. Which is perhaps a distinction without a difference, as far as practical observation is concerned. *g*

Agreed! :-)

Ha, I was going to say that bit, too. I love all those little moments when people kind of blanch in the face of just his expression and power. :DDDD

Yes, agreed. Like, in the car in ep 14, when Zhao Yunlan's singing, he's still very much the Envoy, but those barriers fairly quickly start to become more permeable. That's kind of his main character arc, isn't it?

Right???? It's so good, I love it to pieces. :D

At the very least it's a huge part of it!

I'm exceedingy fond of the entire interrogation scene in episode 4. - OH I love this moment too. The music and the way he delivers the lines are excellent. THe whole turning to look through the two way mirror is also chef's kiss! :D :D :D :D

Some of my favorite episodes are prior to the identity reveal, though I do love the whole story line :D But pre-identity reveal was always a fun ride to watch!

I love your theme! I love your screencap choices, and all Shen Wei's different levels of intensities just in this episode -- and different kinds of intensities, from the soft-faced tragic wonder of his first seeing Zhao Yunlan to the fierceness of facing off with the Shadow Man, and the stern implacability, and just everything.
During the whole conversation he’s all smiles/innocent Professor Shen Wei and in this moment, where he asks if Dixing and Haixing people are so different, his face to me becomes very serious.
Yess! I think that's an expression we often see on the Envoy, especially early on, though it's hard to tell because of the mask. That very serious, testing, searching look. ♥
I loooove his suspicious look over his shoulder when he's talking to Li Qian, and how he then kind of smiles to himself. Because he wants Zhao Yunlan to be stalking him, lol. And then, omg, everything on the rooftop, when he totally drops the pretence of harmlessness and ordinariness. So awesome!!!
I love all the scenes others have mentioned too, ALL SO GOOD! I would also add:
Once again, thank you for this fabulous picspam, yayayay! :D :D :D

SO awesome! So true, he wants the stalking to be mutual. :p
when he reveals to Ying Chun who he is in ep 6, just by summoning his dao and doing his Envoy face
Yes, that one is particularly excellent! Such a small gesture, saying so much.

That very serious, testing, searching look. ♥ - Oh I love this thought! THe whole testing/searching look. That's it totally cause he's looking to see if ZYL remembers being Kunlun/or is Kunlun. AHHHHH :D I am having feelings now :D
I love all the episodes you added, but I do especially love this one: in episode 5, when he confronts Wu Tian'en in the street and takes off his glasses
Love it! :heartheart!:

Oh, ha, I was thinking Shen Wei/the Envoy was testing Zhao Yunlan's opinions about and attitudes to Dixingren. But yes, either (or both!) works, especially early on. :-)
