Introducing the Case of the Week Series!
Welcome to sign-ups for the Case of the Week Series! In this series, post hosts choose 1) a weekend slot, and 2) a case from the list below (or any other Guardian case we’ve missed, novel or drama). On your chosen weekend, post anything related to the case. Post ideas:
All degrees of familiarity with canon are welcome, from first-time watchers/readers to those with an unofficial Diploma in Guardian Studies. Come play with us, and roll around in the sleeve-garter-, tooth-necklace-, and cigarette-or-lollipop-strewn glory that is Guardian.

Note: The case list below is based on the drama only because that’s what we’re familiar with, and we understand the novel doesn’t have cases of the week in the same way. For the cases that do have parallels, you’re very welcome to sign up to post about the novel version, or make a comparison between novel and drama! Eps 1-2: Sundial Necklace/Li Qian Case [Li Qian, Li Yufen (Li Qian’s grandma)]
Shen Wei's favourite student is attacked by murderous necklace thieves. Luckily, the SID is on the case, and her professor is a BAMF.
Ep 3: Rape Revenge Case [Zhang Ruonan, Wang Yike]
Shen Wei's colleague's secret student-girlfriend goes on a murderous vengeance rampage, but everyone ships them anyway. Zhao Yunlan steals cake.
Eps 3-4: Face-Stealer Case [Zhang Danni, Jia Hui, Lin Yusen]
Poisonous-gas woman uses her face-stealing boyfriend to get multiple makeovers. Never satisfied. Also, she interrupts Shen Wei’s and Zhao Yunlan’s night-time stroll in the park.
Ep 5: Bath Kidnappings Case [Li & Huang families, Butler Wu Tian’en, Wu Xiaojun]
Engaged couple are kidnapped from their respective baths (while conveniently not-naked). The butler's son did it, but the real villains are the couple's dads.
Eps 5-6: Mirror Girl Case [Zhou Weiwei, Mirror Zhou Weiwei, Ji Xiaobai]
Depressed girl switches places with her reflection. Reflection gets makeover and fiancé, and is understandably reluctant to switch back.
Ep 7: Web Novelist Case [Lai Su]
Horror writer's characters come to life off the page and kill him... but not before they kill other people. Lin Jing learns the hard way: never meet your heroes.
Eps 8 & 17: Escaped Dixing Convict Case [Ding Dun]
Dixing Ambassador seeks escaped convict Ding Dun for information and arrest. Unfortunately, the SID's best detective is off drinking himself into gastric distress, after striking out with his crush.
Eps 9-11: Hanga Arc: The Awl and the En-pillared Boyfriend Case [Sang Zan, Zhu Jiu]
Treasure-hunt time: Wang Zheng's old flame is stuck in a rock, inside a mountain. So is the Mountain-River Awl. Ghosts energy beings (real and fake)! Hypnosis! And lots of backstory.
Eps 11-14: Mind-Control Girl Case [Tan Xiao, Zheng Yi]
Super-powerful mind-control girl has one friend and spends three episodes looking for him, leaving a trail of chaos and destruction in her wake. Tan Xiao fakes Dixing powers with a sonic device; Zhao Yunlan fake-shoots Zhu Hong and Shen Wei, as well as actually shooting Zhu Jiu.
Eps 14-15: “Whistleblower” Case [Cong Bo]
Web gossipmonger snoops around the SID and attempts to blackmail Shen Wei. But Zhao Yunlan can’t stand to see talent go to waste.
Eps 15-17: Missing Dijun Register Case [Butler Wu, An Bai & friends, Ding Dun]
Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan scour Dixing for a missing MacGuffin. It doesn't go so well.
Eps 15-17: Earthbender Guy Case [Bao Laosan, Zhao Xinci]
Sad old guy makes a hole in the ground. Daddy Zhao and the team interview a bunch of witnesses and kittens until the guy gives himself away by attacking the SID.
Eps 17-18: Underground Fight Club Case [Ye Huo, Bo Bi (brother of dead fighter)]
The first rule of fight club is that Chu Shuzhi has to wear a singlet and shorts. The masked bad guy is not a bad guy.
Eps 19-20: Absolute Zero Lab Kidnapping Case [Ye Huo, Zhu Jiu]
Chu Shuzhi, Guo Changcheng, and Ye Huo are kidnapped and chill! Purple-hair guy locks them in a high-tech freezer; Shen Wei takes him down.
Eps 21-22: Miracle Doctor Case [Feng Qubing]
The miracle doctor is a dick, but he doesn't deliberately steal people's life force. It's an accident. Shen Wei kneels in the rain.
Ep 23: Murdered King Case [King of Dixing/Dijun, Deacon/Attendant, Regent, An Bai & friends]
The King is dead;long short live the King! Aka: The King of Dixing is murdered; Zhao Yunlan dresses up as his successor.
Ep 24: Video Game Case [Zu Ma, Dr Cheng Xinyan]
Shen Wei's doctor friend's little brother mind-controls an entire hospital and most of the SID, in the Haixing version of Squid Game.
Eps 24-25: Personality-Change Virus Case [Zhu Hao (taxi driver), Kong Jing (multiple personality guy)]
OOC-ness is contagious! A Dixing power flips the SID team's personalities; Zhao Yunlan tears his hair out. Also, he gets kidnapped.
Eps 26-27: Nine Lives Cat Girl Case [Da Ji (Cat Yashou), Lao-Li]
A second member of the Cat Tribe is murdered, bounces back, gloms onto Da Qing really hard, and is killed again. But don’t worry, she comes back … and hits Da Qing with a bat.
Eps 27-28: Electric Girl Case [Sha Ya, Hua Yuzhu (Sha Ya’s friend)]
Too-cool-for-school electric girl tries to honeytrap Lin Jing, with moderate success. The SID catch her and reunite her with her estranged friend.
Eps 28-29: Zhao Xinci Kidnapping/Treasure Hunt Case [Wang Xiangyang (Mr Grocer), Bai Suxia (Mrs Grocer), Zhao Xinci]
The fruitseller near the SID kidnaps Zhao Yunlan's dad and distracts the SID with a sinister treasure hunt. Backstory from a more innocent time.
Eps 28-30: Flashback: Love Triangle Case [Sha Ya, Hua Yuzhu (Sha Ya’s friend), Gu Ban (Sha Ya’s wannabe boyfriend), Zhao Xinci]
Who killed Sha Ya and her not-girlfriend’s love triangle guy? Sha Ya gets it wrong because Hua Yuzhu isn’t talking.
Ep 31: Flashback: The Body-Snatcher Case, aka Daddy Zhao meets Golden-Eyes [Zhao Xinci, Zhang Shi]
Back when Zhao Yunlan's dad was a cop, he found a dead guy and got parasitised by a homeless bodiless Dixingren. Guess that’s one way to get superpowers?
Eps 31-33: Nightmare Master Case [Nightmare Master, Regent]
It's a dreamfest! Zhu Hong dreams of Zhao Yunlan; Xiao Guo dreams of Chu Shuzhi attacking him; Chu Shuzhi dreams of going to Dixing with Xiao Guo to look for Chu Shuzhi's little brother.
Eps 32-33: Flashback: The Twin Switcheroo Case [Chu Nianzhi (Chu Shuzhi’s brother), Regent]
One twin gets into a bar fight. One twin is murdered. One twin kills in revenge. Which twin is which? It’s twin-tastic confusion until Chu Shuzhi comes clean.
Eps 34-35: Ye Olde Haixing Era (YOHE) Arc: The Stolen Hallows Case [Ma Gui (human leader), Fu You (Yashou leader), Ye Zun]
Ten thousand years, and you’re still like this! <-- what Shen Wei has been thinking all along; now Zhao Yunlan gets his turn, in YOHE. All while fighting the Rebels and chasing after the Hallows, stolen by…?
Eps 35 & 40: The Missing Twin Case [Shen Wei, Ye Zun, the Rebel Chief]
What happened to Ye Zun when they were kids? Shen Wei doesn’t know… and neither does Ye Zun. But it’s definitely Shen Wei’s fault. No, wait, it’s definitely the Rebel Chief’s. Stay tuned for denouement via mind-meld.
