Summary:

In the early morning sun, the SID’s brick façade glows like a volcano. There’s already a snaking queue outside, people singly and in couples—one woman with a baby, two teenagers with a sleepy child.

Dai Jiaying joins the queue’s tail, and others soon come up behind until, logically, they’re the tail, and she’s right in the snake’s belly. She banishes the thought, shoves her doubts and misgivings away; she’s here now. She tilts her face into the sunlight and prepares to wait.
