I keep going back to the rewatch posts to see 'what happened when' in the drama, so I thought I'd compile all the episode summaries in one place, rather than endlessly scrolling through the tag. I figured I might as well post them here, in case anyone else would find them useful.

Most of the pics are copied from the original posts, but I snagged one or two from Scene Discussions.


Episode 1

• Professor Ouyang tries to recruit Professor Shen

• Zhao Yunlan accuses Li Qian of murdering her grandmother. Li Qian doesn't deny it.
• The hospital attacker snatches Li Qian from the car, and the spirit of Li Qian's grandmother comes out of the Dial to save her.

Episode 3

Episode 4

• The interrogation scene.
• Shen Wei accompanies Zhao Yunlan and Lin Yusen to a crime scene, gets attacked, and heals the cut on his arm.
• Zhao Yunlan starts to form a theory about Shen Wei's power.
• Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei's first night-time stroll, during which they talk about names and friendship.
• Shen Wei pricks his finger and laughs when Zhao Yunlan freaks out.
• The SID (minus Zhao Yunlan) run a sting, and Da Qing and Zhu Hong are kidnapped.

• Wu Tian'en shouts at a lake, is interviewed by Zhao Yunlan and sees a mysterious figure outside

• everyone pleads with the Black-Cloaked Envoy to save Wu Tian'en

Episode 6

• Da Qing and Guo Changcheng are tactless while interviewing Mirror Girl's fiancé, Ji Xiaobai, and Zhao Yunlan stomps on Da Qing's foot. (♥!)
• Guo Changcheng gives more of his tragic backstory and reminds Chu Shuzhi of his twin brother (who we see in a flashback).
• Shen Wei talks to Flower Yashou Ying Chun for the first time and voluntarily reveals (ie, connects) both of his identities to her in exchange for info.
• Zhao Yunlan goes to Shen Wei for a cosy night-time chat advice about the case, and Shen Wei points out this is their first not-a-suspect consultation. They both enjoy it.
• Changcheng successfully thwarts someone stalking him... who turns out to be Ji Xiaobai, who's actually looking for him.
• The Envoy and the SID agree on a new policy, ie, that only Dixingren who've misused their powers will be deported.
• Zhao Yunlan confirms that Ji Xiaobai's real fiancée was the Dixingren who was taken away by the Envoy.
• The Envoy rebukes Mirror Girl, and she gives him a clue re the Mountain-River Awl.
• Zhao Yunlan and Da Qing sprawl around delightfully and gossip about Shen Wei. Da Qing says Zhao Yunlan has changed.
• Lin Jing figures out the location of Shen Wei's flat, and Zhao Yunlan and Da Qing search it. Da Qing mentions his ex-owner, Zhao Yunlan finds a file about the SID, and they both nearly get caught by Shen Wei.
• Zhao Yunlan and Da Qing send a message to Dixing enquiring about Shen Wei by name.
• Chu Shuzhi brings Shen Wei an ugly banner from Zhao Yunlan, and Zhao Yunlan and Da Qing watch via a camera hidden on the banner.
• Shen Wei confronts the Chancellor about Li Qian dropping out of university, and Zhao Yunlan overhears and talks to Shen Wei about it.
• The start of the mugging, and our first second glimpse of Shen Wei's pendant!

Episode 7

• We see Shen Wei's orb pendant for the first time!
  
• Zhao Yunlan "rescues" Shen Wei from the muggers.
  
• Zhao Yunlan visits Shen Wei's apartment for the first time, where Shen Wei (very sexily) tends to Zhao Yunlan's bruised arm.
  
• Zhao Yunlan asks Shen Wei to join the SID. Shen Wei declines.
  
• Zhao Yunlan accidentally reveals that he has been snooping in Shen Wei's apartment.
  
• We learn that both Lin Jing *and* Da Qing read web novels!
  
• While going over surveillance footage, Da Qing, Lin Jing, Chu Shuzhi, and Guo Changcheng are surprised to see Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei out together in the middle of the night. Zhao Yunlan gets all sheepish.
  
• Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan have a video conference (facilitated by an irritated Zhu Hong) to try to figure out what killed the mugger in the alley. Shen Wei knows a lot about bears! Other delightful flirting takes place, and Zhao Yunlan refers to Shen Wei as "a friend" when attempting to get him to stop being so cagey.
  
• Zhao Yunlan says that because he's met a number of the Dixing now, he "won't tar them all with the same brush".
  
• Do we get a glimpse of Ya Qing (in crow form) for the first time?
  
• Chu Shuzhi uses his strings to tangle with the youchu.
  
• Zhu Jiu learns that the SID has a dark energy shield, and reveals that he is after both the Longevity Dial and the Mountain River Awl.

Episode 8

• Xiao-Guo becomes a permanent member of the SID, and gets his fear stick

• Wang Zheng gets an anonymous letter which sparks her memory

• Roadtrips! The SID set off in two cars. Shen Wei sets off with Jiajia and Xiao Quan.
• Team Shen Wei break down, and Team SID fix their car and insist on joining forces.
• Zhu Hong and Lin Jing gossip about Shen Wei, and her crush on Zhao Yunlan becomes increasingly obvious.
• Zhao Yunlan uses Shen Wei as a travel pillow.
• Zhu Jiu assembles two armies: youchu and ghost soldiers.
• Zhao Yunlan gives Shen Wei his jacket.
• The mountain village is spooky in a variety of ways.
• Wang Zheng recounts "rumours" of the Hanga tribe and its slavery practices.

Episode 11

• The Envoy draws the Mountain-River Awl out of the pillar, and Wang Zheng begs him to use it to reconstitute Sang Zan's energy.
• Zhao Yunlan gives Sang Zan an unpaid job at the SID.
• Zhao Yunlan finds Zhu Hong asleep, and her reaction to a mention of Shen Wei arouses his suspicions (again).
• The Drinking Scene!! Shen Wei throws himself on an alcohol grenade and immediately falls unconscious.
• Zhao Yunlan puts him to bed and smells his jacket.
• Shen Wei wakes up to a note from Zhao Yunlan, also smells his jacket, and realises his cover might be blown.
• Back in Dragon City, Guo Changcheng writes in his diary that the SID is unhappy.
• Start of the Zheng Yi case.
• Guo Changcheng has an upset stomach and calls Lao Chu a giant popsicle.
• Zhao Yunlan has a LOT of flashbacks about Shen Wei and speculates about the Envoy with Da Qing.

Episode 12

• Zhu Hong is drugged by her uncle; he wants the Snake Tribe to stay out of the coming conflict

Episode 13

• Zhao Yunlan and co find Da Qing trashing the fruit shop and tame him with fish.
• Zhu Jiu uses Zheng Yi to cause chaos at the Huang/Li wedding, and Shen Wei lets off his Dixing power EMP to break the mass hypnosis.
• Zhao Yunlan and co arrive, and Zhao Yunlan starts to scold Shen Wei but gets diverted into schmoozing (and defending Shen Wei to) Minister Gao.
• Cong Bo has a scoop.
• Zhao Yunlan stews in the Huangs' parlour; Shen Wei comes in to check on him? apologise? give more flimsy excuses.
• The SID find Cong Bo cowering in the street, and Zhao Yunlan learns there's someone behind Zhu Jiu.
• Zhu Jiu and Ya Qing bicker (despite Zheng Yi's presence).
• Chu Shuzhi rescues Guo Changcheng from the Snakes, and in flashback Changcheng defends the SID to Fourth Uncle.
• Zhao Yunlan finds Tan Xiao at the lab and sends him to the SID.
• Ying Chun actively aligns herself with the Envoy by telling on Ya Qing.
• Shen Wei finds Zhao Yunlan at the lab, and Zhao Yunlan confronts him with this circumstantial proof of his other role and says, "Shen Wei, I thought we were friends."
• Zhu Jiu interrupts this heart-to-heart and uses Zheng Yi to take Zhao Yunlan hostage. Shen Wei tries to bargain and transforms into his Envoy form. Zhu Jiu whisks Zhao Yunlan and Zheng Yi away.
• Shen Wei looks for Zhao Yunlan, over-extending himself, and coughs up blood.
• Ying Chun appeals to Ya Qing to turn back to the Light Side, but Ya Qing says it's too late.
• Zhu Jiu uses Zhao Yunlan to invade the SID, reuniting Zheng Yi and Tan Xiao so Zheng Yi will give him the Hallows.
• On Zhu Jiu's command, Zhao Yunlan shoots Zhu Hong.
• Shen Wei arrives, finds Zhu Hong's body and tells seemingly hypnotised Zhao Yunlan, "You're my best friend."
• The whole fake-out with Zhu Jiu telling Zhao Yunlan to shoot Shen Wei, Zhao Yunlan shooting, and Shen Wei rising up again for that classic battle couple shot from the credits.
• The glorious reveal where Zhao Yunlan is a total brat, and we and Shen Wei learn he's been faking all along.

• At Zhao Yunlan's flat, Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei apologise to each other and make a plan to deal with Cong Bo.
• Cong Bo gets his comeuppance and conversion.
• Zhu Jiu is a) still healing and b) rude to Ya Qing.
• Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei toast their success, Shen Wei explains his power of learning, and Zhao Yunlan gets him to clean the flat (again).

• The SID team arrive and take on Bao Laosan. Zhao Xinci comes from inside the SID and pulls his gun. Bao Laosan is shot.
• In Dixing, Wu Tian'en tells Zhao Yunlan about an information merchant.
• Separately, Shen Wei scares the crap out of An Bai and his friends.
• Ya Qing is disgusted by Zhu Jiu's betrayal of Bao Laosan, but Zhu Jiu says his boss would do the same.
• We get the first half of Zhu Jiu's backstory, and confirmation that Creepy Pillar Guy is his boss.
• Zhao Yunlan feels sick from over-exposure to dark energy, and starts to formulate a plan to catch Zhu Jiu.
• The SID is subdued. Zhao Xinci says they did well. Da Qing privately asks Zhao Xinci if he really killed Bao Laosan.
• A masked Ding Dun offers Zhao Yunlan relationship advice and then stabs him in the arm.
• Shen Wei arrives in the nick of time, fights Ding Dun, rescues some smouldering pages of the Register, and saves Zhao Yunlan's life.
• Zhao Yunlan dreams about meeting his mother at the sky pillar, then wakes up in the SID.
• Zhao Xinci visits Shen Xi's grave, argues with Zhang Shi, and remembers his and Shen Xi's tragic backstory.

Episode 18

• Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng watch a cage fight.
• Chu Shuzhi decides to lure out the arena champion by stepping into the cage himself.
• Ye Huo accepts Chu Shuzhi’s challenge, because he wants to know if Chu Shuzhi really can protect his friends.
• Zhao Yunlan learns that they’ve gotten involved in the actual fighting and has strong feelings about this. Shen Wei says he’s the pot calling the kettle black when he brings up Chu Shuzhi’s risk-taking and insubordination.
• Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan talk briefly about Chu Shuzhi’s backstory as it relates to Hei Pao Shi.
• As Chu Shuzhi prepares to fight Ye Huo, Bo Bi tells him about the revenge he wants to take for his little brother’s death.
• Chu Shuzhi and Ye Huo fight; Ye Huo reveals his Dixingren power of creating fire.
• Zhao Yunlan decides he needs to check on Guo Chengchang and Chu Shuzhi, just in case, and Shen Wei comes along with him.
• Chu Shuzhi gets the upper hand in the fight. The crowd storms the cage to protect their fave.
• Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei arrive. Zhao Yunlan fires a fake gun at the ceiling to quell the crowd.
• Bo Bi confronts Ye Huo. We see Ye Huo’s perspective on how he “betrayed” Xiao Jie by not allowing him to win a fight.
• Bo Bi and Ye Huo briefly fight before Shen Wei (as Hei Pao Shi) interrupts and sends Bo Bi to safety.
• Ye Huo escapes on a motorcycle; Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan chase him in Zhao Yunlan’s jeep.
• Lin Jing and Da Qing arrive to help, and are sent to investigate the “base” Ye Huo is leading them away from.
• Ye Huo ambushes Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan in a warehouse for a very fun fight.
• Lin Jing, Da Qing, and Bo Bi (who followed them) investigate the large secluded house they arrived at and are captured by the young men who live there.

Episode 35

• Zhao Yunlan fixes Shen Wei's name and asks about his past and his brother.
• Ye Zun brings the Hallows to the Rebel Leader and gets kicked in the chest, mind-controlled and abused until his power manifests and he commits involuntarily cannibalism; he becomes the new Rebel Leader.
• Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan talk in the moonlight some more; Da Qing runs up to say the Rebels have declared war.
• Clash #1: Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan reclaim the Hallows, and Zhao Yunlan shoots a bunch of guys.
• For the first time in months, Zhao Yunlan fails to activate the Hallows (but at least he doesn't have visions, collapse or go blind).
• Da Qing chooses Zhao Yunlan as his master, and Zhao Yunlan fastens the bells around Da Qing's neck.
• Clash #2: Ye Zun & co attack, Ye Zun's mask comes off, and the brothers reunite... until Ye Zun knocks everyone down.
• The Hallows' wormhole swallows Zhao Yunlan, and he meets present-day Shen Wei inside.
• From there, they watch as:
  • Ye Zun falls into the energy seal, and Shen Wei follows after
  • the Treaty is signed and the Allied Forces disbanded
  • Da Qing leaves in search of his memories
  • 10k years later, the Regent sends Ding Dun to Haixing to investigate the energy seal and look for the Hallows
  • Ding Dun's mission finds the newly waking Envoy
  • the Regent and Shen Wei agree on their roles
  • Shen Wei talks to pillar!Ye Zun, then returns to Haixing and catches some petty Dixingren crooks.
• Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan leave the wormhole and land in the SID lab, where Da Qing is waiting.
• Da Qing says Dixing has declared war on Haixing; cue flashback to Ye Zun impersonating the Envoy and burning the treaty.
• At the DoS security check, Changcheng gets stopped because of his baton, and the guard sends for Professor Lin.
• In the street, Zhao Yunlan tells Shen Wei that he's not a knife, and says the big problem for the moment is humans.
• Lin Jing comes to the DoS security check and takes Changcheng's baton.

• Zhao Yunlan makes Cong Bo hack the Inspectorate. Zhao Yunlan, Shen Wei and Cong Bo witness:
• Professor Ouyang and Minister Gao discussing the serum
• Ye Zun visiting Minister Gao and demanding he give up Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei
• Vice Minister Guo being arrested
• Zhao Yunlan decides to have a worldwide livestream
• Guo Changcheng and Lin Jing meet in a bathroom
• Zhao Yunlan is on everyone's screen telling them Dixingren are people just like them

• The team search the SID for the Guardian Lantern and find it. Its wick is missing.
• Lin Jing's dying video message arrives, mentioning "the rest of the exits," and the team decides to split up:
  • Shen Wei to Dixing to find the wick
  • Zhu Hong and Zhao Yunlan (and Da Qing) to the Snake Village to protect them from the Crows (and find the gateway)
  • Changcheng and Chu Shuzhi to say in Dragon City where Changcheng can use his power for good.
• Team handclasp!!
• Dragon City is littered with smoke and bodies. Changcheng uses his power but finds it heartbreaking; Chu Shuzhi is supportive. ♥!
• Shen Wei has trouble opening the portal and coughs blood.
• The three Yashou elders have a standoff at the Snake Village. The Crows are backed up by Dixingren, including illusionist Mi Lu.
• Ya Qing calls for elections; Mi Lu just wants to kill everyone.
• Mi Lu goes to "welcome" the approaching SID and turns the forest into an illusory labyrinth, trapping (and toying with) Zhao Yunlan, Zhu Hong and Da Qing.
• In Dragon City, Changcheng collapses, and Chu Shuzhi catches him.
• Zhu Hong uses her Snake power to kill Mi Lu(!!).
• In Mi Lu's absence, Ya Qing switches sides and says she just wants to be High Chief.
• The Yashou hold their election, and Zhao Yunlan shamelessly interferes in their weird electoral process.
  • Flashbacks to YOHE science experiments and Ma Gui's crush on Fu You.
• Zhu Hong wins the election, but is reluctant to take office until Fourth Uncle gives her a pep talk and Zhao Yunlan nods.
• Chu Shuzhi, Changcheng and Ye Huo unite in Dragon City and decide to work together. Aww!
• In Dixing, Shen Wei runs into Wu Xiaojun, who asks for vengeance for his father; they go to the palace.
• In Ye Zun's stomach, Lin Jing finds Sha Ya's guitar and cries. :-(
• Shen Wei holds his blade to the Regent's throat, but gets talked out of killing him. Then Wu Xiaojun and the Regent turn on him, seemingly knocking him out. But he's still conscious.

Episode 38

• Zhao Yunlan, Zhu Hong and Da Qing enter the Yashou restricted area and find a set-up to use the Hallows
• Guo Changcheng passes on the last wishes of the dead via livestream
• at the hospital, Guo Changcheng's message helps calm down some panicking patients
• Zhao Yunlan, Zhu Hong and Da Qing have a videocall with Ma Gui and Fu You
• Dr Cheng gets permission to go out into the streets and give first aid
• Professor Ouyang comes to confront Ya Qing; everyone unites against him
• Zhang Shi introduces himself to everyone and tells them he knows the Guardian Lantern's secret
• Ye Zun tortures Shen Wei and announces Zhao Yunlan is coming; Shen Wei gives an iconic speech ("My energy is black. My eyes, my hair, and even my soul are black ...")
• Guo Changcheng insists on joining Zhao Yunlan in going to Dixing

• Shen Wei takes the dark energy hit and falls to the ground. Zhao Yunlan is horrified.
• Ye Zun stabs Shen Wei with an icicle and eats him, because killing him once is not enough.
• Shen Wei and Lin Jing meet in Ye Zun's stomach.
• In Dragon City, Tan Xiao and Zheng Yi come to join the fight against the invaders.
• Ye Zun projects his torture of Zhao Yunlan into the Haixing sky for all to see.
• Zhao Xinci and the Yashou elders make a plan to fight the invaders.
• Zhao Xinci and Zhang Shi talk about cooperation and remember Zhao Yunlan's childhood dream of peace and harmony for all people.
• Over drinks, Ye Zun tries to persuade Zhao Yunlan to join him, but Zhao Yunlan just wants him dead. No, really.
• Zhao Yunlan escapes, using the Regent as a hostage.
• Zhu Hong arrives in Dragon City; Chu Shuzhi is worried about Xiao Guo.
• Zhao Xinci and the Yashou elders defend Haixing at the Locust Tree gate.
• Shen Wei instructs Lin Jing in how to kill him for real, when the time is right.
• More fighting in Dragon City; Da Qing and Da Ji are attacked, and Da Ji is choked to death.
• Zhao Xinci sees Zhu Hong, Chu Shuzhi and Da Qing off to Dixing; he gives Da Qing a syringe of the serum.
• Zhao Yunlan goes to the Dixing bar and gets the Lantern; Ye Zun shows up in Envoy cosplay.
• Zhao Yunlan broadcasts Ye Zun's villain monologue to all of Dixing.
• At the palace, Ye Zun activates the booby-trapped Lantern, which explodes, injuring Ye Zun and knocking An Bai to his senses; Ye Zun eats An Bai and the Regent.
• Chu Shuzhi, Da Qing and Zhu Hong arrive in Dixing and hear that Shen Wei has been eaten.
• Ye Zun thinks he's won now he has the Hallows; he still doesn't have the wick, but he knows he can use Guo Changcheng.
• The bartender gives a rousing speech to the people of Dixing.
• Guo Changcheng remembers Lao Chu and his time at the SID, and snaps himself out of the compulsion to defy Ye Zun.
• Chu Shuzhi, Zhu Hong and Da Qing arrive at the palace and fight Ye Zun.
• Da Qing decides to use the serum, but Zhao Yunlan grabs it and injects himself.

Episode 40

• Zhao Yunlan injects himself with the serum
• Ye Zun needs to consume more and more, and makes everyone in Dragon City (in Haixing?) pass out
• Zhao Yunlan tries various things against Ye Zun:
  • he asks what Ye Zun even wants, letting Ye Zun explain his worldview
  • once his serum power strength enhancement kicks in, he physically fights Ye Zun
  • aided by Guo Changcheng and Da Qing, he uses the Mountain-River Awl on Ye Zun
  None of it is enough to defeat him, but it all does stall Ye Zun so Zhao Yunlan doesn't get eaten.
• With the use of the Mountain-River Awl, Shen Wei has the moment he has been waiting for - he makes Lin Jing drive the icicle all the way into his chest, then saves Lin Jing, the Regent and An Bai
• Zhao Yunlan's hopes are briefly raised as he sees three dead people come back to life, but the spark is immediately snuffed out again
• Shen Wei releases his energies all at once -Ye Zun realises Shen Wei's energy is white, and Zhao Yunlan realises this was Shen Wei's plan
• Ye Zun and Shen Wei reunite post-death, and clear up the misunderstanding between them
• before leaving, Shen Wei sends his pendant to Zhao Yunlan, who opens it and recognises the lollipop wrapper
• People in Dragon City wake up
• Zhao Yunlan has one last conversation with Ma Gui and Fu You before gives himself to the Guardian Lantern to save the planet from the destruction Ye Zun left behind
• in flashback, Zhang Shi explains how to light the Lantern with sacrifice if the/a wick can't be found
• the Dixing clock strikes, and light comes to Dixing
• the remaining SID members return to Haixing with Zhao Yunlan's body
• One year later:
  • Cong Bo flirts badly with Cheng Xinyan
  • Minister Guo is now Minister; Li Qian is is director of the lab; Zhao Xinci's health is much improved
  • Xiao-Guo has an awkward arranged date; Lao-Chu drags him away
  • Zhu Hong meets with the Yashou tribe leaders
  "Zhao Yunlan" speaks in front of a crowd
• in flashback, Zhao Yunlan asks Zhang Shi to take his place
in Zhao Yunlan's apartment, Da Qing and Lin Jing grieve for Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei
• at the SID, Xiao-guo greets many new faces
• in the starry Hallows void, Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei say goodbye and Shen Wei proposes a bet: they will find each other again
