Guardian fandom friending meme!!!
Our lovely fandom continues to grow beyond our wildest expectations! Comm membership has just hit 100 98 (and we got impatient)! *shameless champagne and ballooooons*
A few small notes and reminders:
And now, without further ado...
Since some of us are new to Dreamwidth, and some of us are new to Guardian, it seems like a good time for a Dreamwidth friending meme. Come and meet new people! (Re)Populate your DW circle!
To participate, just copy the text below, paste it into a new comment and tell us about yourself. (All information is optional.) Then read through other people's comments and say hi / follow them as desired.
(Many thanks to
teaotter for prettifying the banner pic! <3)
A few small notes and reminders:
- The Welcome/Intro post and the Fannish Resources post are still alive and kicking. Feel free to drop in at any time and say hi, or give us all your resource links (even the ones that might seem really obvious)!
- Lurking is also totally fine, of course! *waves to lurkers*
- Please tag your posts to the comm so other users can easily find what they’re looking for. In particular, it would be great if you could use the canon: drama and/or canon: novel tags, since it’s not always obvious to us mods which should apply, including for fanart or vids that use drama visuals but draw on novel elements. This is our current list of tags, and we’ll add more type tags as the need arises.
- You can find the full (updated) comm rules on the profile page.
- Feel free to promote
sid_guardian on your journal or elsewhere. (Here's a graphic and text.)

About You
DW username: riceworkshop!
Languages: English, Tagalog.
Offline location: Australia.
Other online locations: (ao3, twitter, tumblr, pinterest, etc.) I'm riceworkshop on AO3, RlCEWORKSHOP on twitter and heipaoshi on tumblr. I'm on discord also, as Arby/riceworkshop.
I like: All of the above? As long as consensual, no one's related and everyone's of age.
Guardian-specific stuff
Drama, novel or both? Consume both, but lean towards drama.
Fannish about canon, actors, related shows, RPF or some combination of these? Canon and actors! I do like me some RPF, but all subtle-like. Ish.
How long have you been in the fandom? 3 months ish? It hit me in December, and I went on holiday and celebrated Christmas utterly enamoured with the main characters.
Where can we find your fanworks, if any: Any fic will be posted on AO3 -- though I always post a less edited version on DW first, and snippets of it on tumblr. DW and AO3 mainly, though!
Other points of interest regarding your Guardian fannishness: I lean very heavily towards Yunlan and Bai Yu, to the point where I run baiyusource on tumblr, which is just... a blog entirely dedicated to Bai Yu. I don't think you'll get through an interaction with me where I don't wax poetic about how bright his smile is and how happy and nice he is as a person and oh! he's such an underrated actor! etc etc etc etc. I'm aware that's probably annoying if you're not on the same level of investment, so. That's a point I should make.
Posting habits
How long have you been on Dreamwidth? Where were you before that? I've had this DW since 2010 but never posted until this year. I took a break from fandom in 2017 and sort of stayed quietly on twitter without being traditionally fannish all through-out 2018, but came back. Prior to that, I was on tumblr under riceandshine and various other names.
What do you post about: On DW I post about Life, Guardian and whatever strikes my fancy, and on tumblr I stick to asian-centric media! Twitter is my free for all. It's locked just because its NSFW, not because I don't like people!
Your other fandoms include: many! I've been in so many it'd be a bit embarrassing to name them all, but I have a constant fondness for SGA fandom, DC comics, kdramas and kpop, anime.
Post frequency: Daily on tumblr (specifically baiyusource because hashtag dedicated), weekly/bi-weekly on DW, embarrassingly frequent on twitter.
Access policy: Fandom posts are all public, life posts are locked. Maybe drop a hi on intro if adding because I have tumblr spam bot fears?
Anything else we should know about you? I really love Bai Yu and Yunlan please Know This.
Random Guardian
If anyone wants to talk to me about Yunlan being really good with people and possibly being either a kindergarten/primary school teacher or a social worker... I'm your man.

he's such an underrated actor
I agree with you! He has a very different acting style than Zhu Yilong, but he is also extremely good. It just slays me that this drama got so lucky with both of its leads.

And yes! Bai Yu is a great actor and we were so lucky to get such amazing actors who Both decided that they could keep the heart of Yunlan and Shen Wei's relationship even with everything else...

In addition to the points you made in your post, I was stunned when I realized that the closed-time-loop-of-love is only in the drama, and that's one of my FAVORITE things! Much better than reincarnation IMHO.
You mentioned in the comments to that post that you feel the novel falls into a lot of BL tropes. Can you specify? One of the things I love about the drama is that SW has many characteristics that fandom will use to say "this character must be the bottom" -- including being The Shorter Man -- but he's [novel-]canonically the top, at least in the present day. I loooove subverting cliched top/bottom expectations!

Firstly - I 100000% agree with this on my end. Zhu Yilong is very much an Asian BeautyTM and on the flipside westerners see those attributes (pale, slender, shorter, quieter) as Bottom Things, and this was very much subverted in the novel. I love how well the author played the audience - to the point that during chapter 75, a very staunch bottom!Shen Wei stan commented that they 'couldn't deny it' anymore. I giggled a bit.
I honestly don't remember the context which I said that, but mostly it's the intensity of their romance in novel - that borders on obsessive and creepy. It sometimes feels as if these kinds of attributes are celebrated as opposed to being shown as a bad thing. Some people have told me that it's less so towards the end, but I'm holding off judgement until everything's been translated....
Meanwhile in the show, Shen Wei's actions re: Yunlan's blindness causes a temporary rift between them, as well as his talking to Yunlan's father. I think for me, this makes the drama have an edge over the novel. Yunlan is less patient with Shen Wei regarding his autonomy and it leads/could have led to healthier relationships.
