Guardian fandom friending meme!!!

Our lovely fandom continues to grow beyond our wildest expectations! Comm membership has just hit 100 98 (and we got impatient)! *shameless champagne and ballooooons*

A few small notes and reminders:

  1. The Welcome/Intro post and the Fannish Resources post are still alive and kicking. Feel free to drop in at any time and say hi, or give us all your resource links (even the ones that might seem really obvious)!

  2. Lurking is also totally fine, of course! *waves to lurkers*

  3. Please tag your posts to the comm so other users can easily find what they’re looking for. In particular, it would be great if you could use the canon: drama and/or canon: novel tags, since it’s not always obvious to us mods which should apply, including for fanart or vids that use drama visuals but draw on novel elements. This is our current list of tags, and we’ll add more type tags as the need arises.

  4. You can find the full (updated) comm rules on the profile page.

  5. Feel free to promote [community profile] sid_guardian on your journal or elsewhere. (Here's a graphic and text.)

And now, without further ado...

The SID team smiling at each other, with a banner reading "Guardian Friending Meme".

Since some of us are new to Dreamwidth, and some of us are new to Guardian, it seems like a good time for a Dreamwidth friending meme. Come and meet new people! (Re)Populate your DW circle!

To participate, just copy the text below, paste it into a new comment and tell us about yourself. (All information is optional.) Then read through other people's comments and say hi / follow them as desired.

Post a link to this friending meme

(Many thanks to [personal profile] teaotter for prettifying the banner pic! <3)

About You
DW username: [profile] niriel
Languages: English (native), Mandarin Chinese (conversational), Japanese (very rusty)
Offline location: USA
Other online locations: Discord and AO3; you can find links on my profile
I like: pretty much anything as long as it's Weilan related. Also Ye Zun, OT3, and occasionally Ye Zun/Da Qing. Not really into any other ships. Genre-wise I'm especially into angst-with-a-happy-ending and crack-treated-seriously, but I'll read most things.

Guardian-specific stuff
Drama, novel or both? Both! I like the story of the novel more, love both versions of Weilan, and find the world of the drama more interesting.
Fannish about canon, actors, related shows, RPF or some combination of these? Mostly canon, casual fans of the actors, was into derivatives briefly but couldn't keep up, not really into RPF but I'll make an exception sometimes
How long have you been in the fandom? Since early 2021...I just didn't make here until now!
Where can we find your fanworks, if any: Uh...I started posting a couple of things on AO3 but I'm not great at updating regularly. That's where you'll find my fics though if/when I ever finish them. I also used to make fanart but currently taking a break. Art will be posted either be on tumblr or here if I decide to make more.
Other points of interest regarding your Guardian fannishness:
1. I saw the drama first and was actually not that into it (although I thought Bai Yu/Zhu Yilong's acting was great). But then I read the novel and became obsessed with novel Weilan, and from that had a new appreciation for drama Weilan. Ironically these days I'm way more into the drama version (although I still love the novel!)
2. I was more a fan of Shen Wei/Zhu Yilong at first, but over time, Bai Yu/Zhao Yunlan has grown into my fave. (But let's be honest, they're both my fave.)
3. Ye Zun/OT3: at first I couldn't understand why anyone would be into this, then in my quest to figure that out I became obsessed. These days I'm more in the middle, but somehow all my fics are about the three of them.

So in a way, Guardian was kind of like acquired tastes that's gotten better and better over time. And I'm glad I gave it a chance, because this fandom is a lovely community and pretty much everyone I've met in it has been really kind and welcoming!

Posting habits Don't know yet but hopefully somewhat regularly!
How long have you been on Dreamwidth? Where were you before that? Just joined today! Before I was mostly active on Discord (for this fandom) and AO3. I also tried twitter (did not like) and tumblr (used to be really active there a loooooong time ago but not really into it anymore).
What do you post about: Nothing yet, but I'm hoping to post thoughts about Guardian, my writing process, and maybe occasionally about my life
Your other fandoms include: Once upon a time: BBC Sherlock (back in my tumblr days). I also like The Untamed and Can Ci Pin, but I'm not active in those fandoms at all. Also I was obsessed with Lord of the Rings (novels) in my youth and would have joined fandom for that if I'd known it existed.
Post frequency: TBD
Access policy: Fandom posts will be public but posts that are more about my personal life will be access-only. The more we've interacted regularly (whether here or elsewhere), the more likely I am to grant access.

Anything else we should know about you? I tend to be a comer-and-goer. Sometimes I'll be really involved, and then I'll need a break. But if it's something that's meant to be a longterm interest, I always come back. I'm starting to think this is a longterm interest...

Shen Wei watches Zhao Yunlan sleeping

(Yep I think that pretty much sums it up 😅)

Hi, welcome aboard, glad you found your way here! Make yourself at home. :D

I like the story of the novel more, love both versions of Weilan, and find the world of the drama more interesting.

Oh, that's fascinating to hear! What do you find more appealing about the drama's world? *curious drama-only fan*

I was more a fan of Shen Wei/Zhu Yilong at first, but over time, Bai Yu/Zhao Yunlan has grown into my fave. (But let's be honest, they're both my fave.)

Great! I'm a Shen Wei fan first, but I love them both a ridiculous amount, and it's always good to see more Zhao Yunlan-first fans around.

Also, I loved the drama from the start, but even so it just kept getting better for me too. Really rewarding, and the current rewatch is just making me love it even more. (If that's humanly possible, LOL.)

But if it's something that's meant to be a longterm interest, I always come back. I'm starting to think this is a longterm interest...

Excellent to hear! I'm the same way; some things I just keep coming back to, no matter how long it's been.

Thank you for the welcome!

Re: novel vs drama-verse - the world of the novel relies a lot on traditional Chinese mythology, so I think it's a bit hard to appreciate without that background. Also it didn't help that at the time I read the novel, it was back when there were multiple translators, so it was kind of hard to understand in general. I'm hoping with the official translation, it'll be easier to appreciate the universe and maybe learn a bit about the cosmology behind it.

I also just like sci-fi as a genre much more than horror (which I feel like the novel falls into). I find the idea of Dixing-ren and Yashou being mutated from aliens more interesting than them being ghosts/supernatural beings. Unfortunately, it's pretty clear to me that the showrunners only did this to bypass censorship rather than because they were interested in building the world of the drama for its own sake, which is too bad because I feel like there was a lot of missed potential. But on the other hand, it does give us in the fandom a lot to play with in order to fill in the holes.

Yeah, I'm also a sci-fi first reader!

Unfortunately, it's pretty clear to me that the showrunners only did this to bypass censorship rather than because they were interested in building the world of the drama for its own sake

In some ways, perhaps, but in others I feel like they really made the most out of this worldbuilding choice - the entire thematic thread about immigrants, bigotry and discrimination is entirely built on the sci-fi premise, after all, and it runs through the entire show and shapes it on a fundamental level. I really appreciate what they did there! (Not that I wouldn't have loved mor about the alien and spaceship elements too. *g*)
