Guardian readalong: chapters 21 & 22

Guardian novel readalong

Hi, welcome to this week's chapters of our Guardian readalong!

Last week's post (chapters 19 & 20) is here, and you can find all previous chapter discussions on the schedule posts (prologue, 1-16, 17-) or via the !readalong tag.

This week's chapters:
  • Chapter 21: our heroes continue to be besieged by skulls; Zhao Yunlan talks to Shen Wei about watching him; Wang Zheng disappears and Zhao Yunlan follows with Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng;
  • Chapter 22: Zhu Hong talks to Shen Wei; Shen Wei follows Zhao Yunlan and fights Youchu; Zhao Yunlan enters the mountain, gives Xiao-Guo the fear stick, sends the others back, finds Wang Zheng and then faints into the Emissary's arms.
The corresponding chapters in the Chinese version on JJWXC and the fan translation are chapters 32-36.

Excerpts

1) Zhao Yunlan's reaction to Shen Wei watching him sleep

When he'd been startled awake, Zhao Yunlan had seen how Shen Wei was looking at him. It hadn't been the look of someone who'd just woken up or someone lying awake because they couldn't sleep. Shen Wei's expression had been calm and content, something complex but gentle simmering in his gaze. Just seeing it made the heart clench. Zhao Yunlan had had the distinct feeling that those eyes had been focused on him, unblinking, for half the night.

If the situation was that Shen Wei was simply deeply closeted-feeling something for him but too afraid to take the first step-well, that was perfectly normal. Zhao Yunlan was rather attractive, if he said so himself. He was financially secure. He didn't let his beastly temper show in front of just anyone, so he often gave the impression of having a great personality and being easy to talk to. With all that, he had always had good luck when it came to romance.

But whether it was animal attraction or Zhao Yunlan's personal traits, or even love at first sight...would any of those really make someone lie awake all night long just to foolishly watch someone sleep? That had to be several lifetimes of entanglement-a love with deep, deep roots.

2) Chu Shuzhi questions Zhao Yunlan, and something is hinted at

Chu Shuzhi chewed the jerky thoughtfully. He was silent for a bit, then glanced at Guo Changcheng, who wasn't following the conversation at all. After some consideration, he said, "Even though you said it was background research for this trip, you must have already had a certain degree of familiarity with sorcery to be able to put this all together so quickly, right?"

"If you can't tell the difference between ecstasy and heroin, how can you be a drug enforcement officer?" Zhao Yunlan said lightly.

For once, Chu Shuzhi smiled. But bitterness was too entrenched in his appearance for any smile to really brighten his face. "In that case, why don't we 'drug enforcement officers' receive employee training?"

Zhao Yunlan's chewing slowed. He turned to stare at Chu Shuzhi, who blatantly stared back.

Guo Changcheng looked back and forth between them without a clue as to what was going on. He was too afraid of them both to ask. He could only shrink in on himself.

Finally, Zhao Yunlan said, "Lao-Chu, you're smart. I've rarely met anyone smarter than you, so I'm not going to waste my breath. You know perfectly well why. Make of it what you will."

3) Shen Wei vs. Youchu

Shen Wei stood under the mountain's slope and surveyed his surroundings. He suddenly extended an arm, palm down, and made a grabbing motion.

His hand was deathly pale. Blue veins were clearly visible through his skin, as if he were an incredibly detailed recreation of a person. Following his movement, the ground trembled. The wind between the mountains grew fiercer and fiercer. It howled as it began spinning into a vortex, slashing toward the clouds like a blade.

With his hand still in the air, Shen Wei peeled back the ground's surface, revealing the chapped, frozen earth beneath the heavy snow. It was then that something crawled up out of the ground and flung itself straight at Shen Wei's back. Arrow-swift, it hurtled toward its defenseless-looking target. A smell started to permeate the air: the stench of rot mixed with a floral fragrance. In a heartbeat, Shen Wei had already pivoted and clamped a hand around his would-be attacker's neck.

The thing he had grabbed was a youchu. Pure aggression flooded Shen Wei's gentle, handsome face.

The youchu struggled feebly. Gurgling noises came from its throat.

"Rules are rules," Shen Wei said mildly. "Your kind brazenly crossed the boundaries and left the forbidden area without permission. The penalty is death."

The youchu's feet could no longer touch the ground. It kept struggling, writhing like a fish out of water. Its twitching hands came up in a vain attempt to pry Shen Wei's hand off its neck. Shen Wei's fingers tightened. The youchu in his grasp jerked violently a few times and stopped moving, turning rigid.

4) Fear stick time!

Guo Changcheng swung the baton-like thing. Nothing happened. It was like a little flashlight. Of course, it never crossed his mind that his boss might be messing with him. Instead, he assumed he was too dense to understand Director Zhao's explanation. Guo Changcheng had always been the biggest critic of his own intellect.

But Zhao Yunlan didn't seem inclined to go over it again. After his cursory explanation, he'd set off into the cave with his flashlight, forcing Guo Changcheng to jog to keep up. Guo Changcheng didn't know whether to ask questions or just keep quiet. Common sense told him not to enter a dangerous situation without fully understanding something, but...as he looked at Zhao Yunlan's towering back, all he could think was that if he asked, his boss would absolutely curse him to hell and back.

The mere thought of Zhao Yunlan's anger inspired pure terror. As the feeling washed over him, a blinding spark shot out of the little baton with no warning, heading straight for Zhao Yunlan's back.

Fortunately, Zhao Yunlan was on edge and alert. At the unexpected noise, he threw himself to one side. That scorching hot spark shot farther into the cave.

Again in perfect unison, Chu Shuzhi and Zhao Yunlan exclaimed, "Holy shit!"

Chu Shuzhi looked at Guo Changcheng in awe. This useless piece of trash had actually done something that most SID employees didn't even dare contemplate: fucking up their asshole leader.

5) The Emissary sends a sticky note letter

The Soul-Executing Emissary had always been a wordy writer. He was incapable of getting to the point without a polite preface, all but inquiring after the health of every one of Zhao Yunlan's aunts. Only after all that preamble would he address the topic at hand, and that would be concise, demonstrating his grace when it came to complex matters.

This letter, on the other hand, was clearly rushed, with no introduction or conclusion. It was terse enough that it could have been a sticky note.

"Danger. Do not give chase. Hurry back."

Chu Shuzhi craned his neck. "Why would the Emissary send a letter here? What happened?"

Zhao Yunlan folded the letter and stuffed it into his pocket, thinking things over. The Emissary usually sent his "Lone Soul" notices to the SID office. If there wasn't a genuine emergency, he wouldn't have tracked them down out here. After all, he didn't want to be seen by unrelated parties.

Why did he suddenly...

And...how did he know where Zhao Yunlan was?

Questions

How are you enjoying the Hanga arc so far? Which is your favourite bit in these chapters? Favourite parallel with or difference from the drama? Did you cheer when Xiao-Guo zapped Zhao Yunlan? (I did! :p) How do you think the students are feeling about smashing those skulls? Given that Zhao Yunlan has realised Shen Wei isn't human, should he be more worried? What's with all the milk?

(As usual, these are just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like!)

Ooooh, thanks! I never read the JJWXC version, and I always like knowing what the differences are. :D

Damn, they're really ganging up on the kid, but it's hilarious tho. xD (So much of the banter here is so good, I tried not to get sucked into re-reading because I'd never finish my comment, but so many lines are just too funny, and it turns out that even more of them got cut. xD)

"I checked the Chinese for this, and the mnemonic Xiao-Guo recites is 上北下南左西右东 - literally, up north, down south, left west, right east - which also explains Zhao Yunlan's following reaction/explanation about how for the Hanga tribe it's the other way round, south is up (up the mountain) and north is down (towards the water)."

Thanks for this too! :D

"‘Soggy waffles,’ my ass.", MY BELOVED. xD Every time Zhao Yunlan says something, I go 'that's my favorite thing he has ever said' and move on to the next one. xD

These chapters were a lot of fun to read, and I'm loving all the bits and pieces that made their way into the drama either directly or in modified form.

Yes, me too! I enjoyed these chapters so much. :-)

But I'm definitely glad that he's noticing things about Shen Wei, even if I'm still wondering why he's so apparently complacent about his own conclusion that Shen Wei probably isn't human, since he has zero idea what Shen Wei's agenda is ...

Maybe it's because he concluded that in conjunction with Shen Wei seeming to be deeply in love with him. And also, like, Shen Wei hasn't done anything bad or threatening. ZYL must have a sense of him as a good, decent person. So why worry? Especially given there isn't, like in the drama, all the suspicious activity around multiple crime scenes.

The little conversation between him and Shen Wei, where he sort of confronts him but also patiently waits him out, is so good! I really enjoyed that.

Yeah, I really like that he's not pushing too hard.

Because I immediately realised I'd seen that name on the map Chu Shuzhi has in the drama:

Oh, that's so cool. And yes, agreed about ZYL having done the research in the novel, vs the drama. Maybe in the drama they just wanted to give CSZ more to do?

And seriously, I really enjoyed him getting Zhao Yunlan with it. (In the drama, of course, he hits Chu Shuzhi, but then in the novel, those two have barely interacted so far.)

In the drama, doesn't he get ZYL as well? I thought that was where CSZ's thumbs up comes from. *checks* Yep, ep 10, 16:57. And Chu Shuzhi says, "I really haven't thought that the first one to have the guts to hit the Master of the Guardians would be you!" 我真没想到 咱们特调处里第一个混蛋领导动手的 竟然是你 :-)

I'm obsessed with Zhao Yunlan fainting in the Emissary's arms, but what else is new tbh. ♡♡♡

The adorable af skeleton puppet is my favorite character somehow, lol, it does anything at all and I go AWWWW out loud.

"If a large puppet had tried to pull this stunt, he probably would have kicked it to pieces on the spot. But he couldn’t quite bring himself to harm this tiny, thin-boned creature that couldn’t even communicate."

!!! ♡ Like, even Zhao Yunlan agrees with me. xD

"Did you cheer when Xiao-Guo zapped Zhao Yunlan? (I did! :p)"

Ahahah, maybe not cheer, but definitely cackle. xD xD Chu Shuzhi's POV on this is A+++.

I adore Wang Zheng (mostly because I picture her the same as in the drama and she's too damn cute there), and the whole Zhao Yunlan protecting her at all costs thing. I also absolutely love the Hanga arc visually, in general. I'll probably never draw all the parts that deserve it, but dammit, I want to draw something at some point. :D So damn expansive and aesthetically pleasing.

(Daaang, look at me vibing less the same amount, typing more. xD)

This made me laugh! "He didn't let his beastly temper show in front of just anyone, so he often gave the impression of having a great personality and being easy to talk to." If those are his thoughts - he has great self-awareness!

i don't really understand what is going on here: 'Finally, Zhao Yunlan said, "Lao-Chu, you're smart. I've rarely met anyone smarter than you, so I'm not going to waste my breath. You know perfectly well why. Make of it what you will."'

It made me laugh too. I love it. (Your comment reminded me of something I've been wondering, btw: how much of the narration is omniscient "narrator" voice and how much is in the characters' heads. I feel like the narration's a bit more distant than what you'd generally see in a Western novel, and that some of the ruder observations are actually the author's POV seeping in -- what do you think?)

i don't really understand what is going on here: 'Finally, Zhao Yunlan said, "Lao-Chu, you're smart. I've rarely met anyone smarter than you, so I'm not going to waste my breath. You know perfectly well why. Make of it what you will."'

I was wondering about that, too. I wonder if it's just that the SID can't go around teaching people sorcery. That could potentially lead to all kinds of badness, right? Idk...

Thank you for the great post!! Like I said, I really enjoyed these chapters. Zhao Yunlan has some moment of being nice and charming, and the little skeleton puppet was adorable. :D Here are just waaaay too many notes and reactions. :D

What's with all the milk? - hee! Do we know for sure it's cow's milk? Could it be soy?

I love Chu Shuzhi's matter-of-fact use of the talismans. If you have protections, why wouldn't you slap them everywhere? :-)

Zhao Yunlan finally let go of the door. Despite the freezing temperature, he’d broken out into a sweat.

Does that mean he's more scared than he seems or he's exerted himself too much? I presume the latter, in which case, I guess the skulls are quite a threat?

I really love the exchange where Wang Zheng is "just throw me out" and ZYL is legit offended and hurt by the suggestion. However big a jerk he can be, he takes his responsibility for his team very seriously.

Daqing closed his eyes, tucked into Zhao Yunlan’s arms. - awww!

I really like that, compared to novel!Zhao Yunlan with his beastly temper, drama!Zhao Yunlan is generally pretty chill (threats to Lin Jing's bonuses, notwithstanding). :-)

ZYL being aware of his own stalker potential made me laugh.

The other thing about ZYL's not immediately freaking out about Shen Wei not being human is that non-humans aren't illegal in China the way some of them are in Haixing. So that's got to help. And Shen Wei isn't causing any trouble.

I didn't find the jumping skulls scary so much as comedic, I guess because of the lack of hands? Zhao Yunlan accidentally "killing" one with his cigarette butt made me laugh... as did ZYL's "irrational fury" about the blanket not having been left by Shen Wei, hee!

Zhu Hong stared at him, taken aback. “You’re sending me back?”
“Looking human doesn’t make you warm blooded.”

Practicality, chivalry, or being a jerk (cf his other references to her not being human)? I think it's probably mostly practicality this time.

He threw her a small bottle. Zhu Hong found herself holding a bottle of yellow rice wine. It had very low alcohol content and was ideal for warming someone up. It was also produced in Jiangnan and therefore hard to find in the great northwest. Zhao Yunlan had obviously packed it as part of his original preparations, and its small size clearly indicated who it was intended for.

I don't get this. Do they mean Shen Wei? Or ZYL himself?

I love how much stopping to check the map is recreated in the drama.

“Wang Zheng is from the Hanga tribe. Her name used to be Gelan. ‘Wang Zheng’ is the name she gave herself the year she entered the Soul-Guarding Order,” Zhao Yunlan said.

Oh, hey, novel Wang Zheng doesn't have amnesia. In the drama, everyone had amnesia -- I guess to misdirect about the reason Zhao Yunlan doesn't remember being Kunlun?

With the tribal beliefs, it's weird seeing that talked about in a world with literal gods and monsters. I guess not everyone is fully in the know, so different religions spring up based on different partial truths...

Finally, Zhao Yunlan said, “Lao-Chu, you’re smart. I’ve rarely met anyone smarter than you, so I’m not going to waste my breath. You know perfectly well why. Make of it what you will.”

Further to what I said above, I have a note about this that says, "Putting sorcery techniques into the hands of someone like GCC!"

Awww, ZYL thinking of GCC as a lucky charm. <3

Zhu Hong's snake eyes! I guess that wasn't practical for the drama. But aww, they kept the prickliness and rivalry between Zhu Hong and Shen Wei. :D

No one, including Zhu Hong and Lin Jing, remembered that there should have been another person with them.

Shen Wei has powers!!

Aha, the thing moving under the snow last week was a youchu! I like that the drama kept the Emissary's judgement of the youchu, as Shen Wei slaughters them.

Everything about the skeleton messenger, from it rubbing against Shen Wei's pant leg to Zhao Yunlan being protective of it!! Aww! (I'm not usually into kidfic, but Weilan should definitely adopt this skeleton. ;-p)

LOL, Zhao Yunlan has yet another gun under his pant leg AND the stun baton. His trousers are so full! *g*

Guo Changcheng looked at the ground, ashamed. “The examiner said he wouldn’t pass me unless he died and came back to life.” - LOL, and awww! *pets*

Common sense told him not to enter a dangerous situation without fully understanding something, but…as he looked at Zhao Yunlan’s towering back, all he could think was that if he asked, his boss would absolutely curse him to hell and back.

Ugh, I find this way too relateable, and it makes me want to smack ZYL for not being more approachable and kind. ;-p

Love the Indiana-Jones-style booby trap in the caves, and Chu Shuzhi's reaction to Guo Changcheng zapping it. *hearts and hearts*

“Instead, it contains scraps of souls from a hundred beheaded evil spirits. I got most of them from the Soul-Executing Emissary and acquired some from reapers using spirit money. Then I mixed the scraps with True Flames of Samadhi.”

o.O So ZYL has been collecting off-cuts of soul? That is super creepy. (I shouldn't have been surprised by him doing sorcery in later chapters, should I?)

ZYL sending GCC and CSZ back makes so much more sense than in the drama. It's one of my favourite differences in the novel. In the drama, he leaves them behind and goes into the caves alone, which is such a stupid move, especially when he's not confident using his weapon. The caves are full of youchu! Here, they all go into the caves together, then ZYL gets the warning message and decides no point putting them all in danger. (And also, the Emissary knows where he is, so...) It's a much more logical chain of events, imo.

I adore the little puppet trying to block ZYL's way, and ZYL just stepping over it. :D :D :D And then he ends up carrying it on his shoulders, aww! And the way it communicates, it's like a Disney sidekick, like the flying carpet in Aladdin. *g*

From thin air, a long whip appeared in his hand.

Wait, what is happening? (I still get so confused by ZYL doing magic... assuming this is more magic, and not some Indiana Jones schtick.)

Ooh, a pillar. Is this the inspiration for all the drama pillars? I can't remember if there are more in the novel.

Oh, and another knife in his pant leg ("sheathed to his calf") -- HOW CAN THIS GUY EVEN WALK?! :D :D :D

That was so fun.

"I really love the exchange where Wang Zheng is "just throw me out" and ZYL is legit offended and hurt by the suggestion. However big a jerk he can be, he takes his responsibility for his team very seriously."

IKR, this hits me right in the feels, probably because you'd think he wouldn't react like that, and then not only he does, but also there's no way he would do anything else. Ahhh.

"I didn't find the jumping skulls scary so much as comedic, I guess because of the lack of hands? Zhao Yunlan accidentally "killing" one with his cigarette butt made me laugh..."

Lol, yep, "Okay, fine, they bite. But why do they bite you? Aren’t they afraid of being poisoned from ingesting too much plastic?" is especially funny to me. xD

Also I'd still take lollipops instead, but so many things Zhao Yunlan does with cigarettes are just so fun and irreverent. :D

"Putting sorcery techniques into the hands of someone like GCC!"

*snort* I feel like it could be a better idea than it sounds, lol, but it doesn't sound good indeed. xD

"Everything about the skeleton messenger, from it rubbing against Shen Wei's pant leg to Zhao Yunlan being protective of it!! Aww! (I'm not usually into kidfic, but Weilan should definitely adopt this skeleton. ;-p)"

YES AWWWW. (Same, and yes they should. xD xD)

"His trousers are so full! *g*"

I'm just gonna take this without context because I can. 8) xD /moving on

BUT YES, 'how does he even walk' is a very good question, and especially since he does tend to sit all weird in the novel too, and I'm just picturing 'try to lounge like a cat, get stabbed by 11 hidden weapons'?? xD

"And then he ends up carrying it on his shoulders, aww! And the way it communicates, it's like a Disney sidekick, like the flying carpet in Aladdin. *g*"

MORE AWWW. How it this creature that is not even alive my favorite character?? :D (And now that I think about it, it's not even alive, so that makes the Emissary this frakking adorable. :D :D)

I really like that it's Zhao Yunlan specifically who's spelling it out -- it shows understanding, right? He gets Shen Wei's vibe. :D :D :D
