Before Zhao Yunlan? Unless SW doesn't really need to eat (the way he doesn't really need to sleep?), I'd say he probably only ate what he cooked himself. Unless the food at the university is really good, I guess. :D And then he just cooks for both of them all the time, with a side of SID snacks. :D

Oooh, I actually do think he probably finds it calming. ♡ I've never thought about it before, but he does in the novel, and also it would just make sense - considering how good he is at cooking, he must have done it A LOT. :) But originally I just thought 'but what else would he be willing to eat?' :D

Heh. Good point, he does have rarefied tastes -- though having grown up during a time of famine, maybe he wouldn't be that picky after all? I'm not sure about that.

Oooh, that's a fantastic point that I didn't think of! Maybe that's part why he likes his food to be this elaborate - because it's proof that he has a lot of food now? And he's always really careful with it too. (*looks at your icon* Even with the oranges. :D) Damn, everything about Shen Wei's relationship with food is fascinating. All of this, and also other things, like not liking sweets. Because he only likes this one specific lollipop and nothing else will ever compare. :D

Yeah, now I'm thinking that what he cooks for Zhao Yunlan is probably not super representative. :D I have no idea what he eats by himself or on a regular day. (And now I really do want to know that. :D)

Do you mean the meal in episode 22? That doesn't seem particularly elaborate either, though for sure more than he'd do in the middle of the day if it wasn't for ZYL. *g*

I don't think he has rarefied tastes? As far as I can tell, what we know about him and food is just that a) he's not fond of sweet things, b) he's not fond of greasy street food, and c) he likes to cook.

I was thinking relative to ZYL and the SID generally, who seem to subsist entirely on packaged snacks and street food (with the occasional orange to stave off scurvy).

Oh yes, absolutely, but in terms of nutrition, I expect his intake has taken a nosedive. (Otoh, he's getting lots of exercise and sunshine, training the park, so that will make up the difference.) ;D

Heeee, and now I'm wondering what he ate before - if his uncle and aunt were feeding him/making sure he ate, or if he ate like a college student, which imo is very comparable to eating like a SID employee. xD (I know his grandma fed him as a kid, but that's a long time ago.) I read a fic where he went 'omg this is so not okay' at the SID eating habits and started cooking for CSZ. :D

I have a bad habit of importing cultural norms from Kdramas, as if a) Kdramas bear any relation to reality, and b) the East Asian cultural sphere is more homogeneous than it probably is, so I always assume that in the absence of parents, Changcheng lives with his uncle and aunt, since there's no reason for him not to.

I'm assuming he lives with them, yeah (isn't it canon? at least it's heavily implied, otherwise idk where I'd get it from :D), but if they don't even know enough about his work, they may not be all that interested in what he's eating? Plus he just graduated college, where he probably learned to eat in a way that would make him fit right in with the SID. :D But I'm equally in favor of both headcanons - this one, and the opposite one where he eats great nutricious meals at home and is horrified to see how much it's not the case at work. :D

Do we see any more of Changcheng's homelife than that? I've just been assuming (and may have been incepted by fic).

Maybe. Or maybe they talk about other things at family dinner, and Changcheng doesn't mention the SID because someone impressed on him how secret the work there is (and also he's a bit embarrassed about his klutziness) (and also, when dangerous things happen, he doesn't want them to worry)?
