If you know of any fanworks where Lin Jing makes other cool inventions, feel free to link those, too.

- the watch he gives to ZYL just before ZYL gets kidnapped by Kong Jing
- the anti-hypnosis earbuds, of Envoy Reveal fame
- possibly the black energy-suppressing handcuffs used on Zhu Jiu (but we don't know if Lin Jing invented them, they never get explained and really only appear the once, so who knows)
- the security system for the Hallows (which must be Lin Jing's doing, but what does it actually do? who knows)
- what he uses to track down Zheng Yi (or possibly Tan Xiao's sonic device?) in episode 12
- the protection against Sha Ya's electric powers when they confront her and Wang Xiangyang on the roof
I may be missing some! Lin Jing does a lot; I didn't even remember how much until I went through the episodes in my mind. *g*But anyway, "best" for purposes of viewer entertainment has to be either the popcorn maker (because that scene is glorious) or the Envoy Reveal earbuds. But from a worldbuilding/in-world importance POV it's got to be the SID's black energy shield.

And I feel like the handcuffs have to be him, too. If the Inspectorate lab had that technology, they'd be expanding that instead of developing a serum, and we don't see anyone else doing dark-energy-related science.
I can't believe I forgot the anti-hypnosis earbuds, doh!

I approve of your conclusions, even if I still can't help preferring the fear baton above everything else. It's such a genius idea. :D
ETA: Nearly seven years!!! How has it been nearly seven years already??

OH OKAY YEP, I just went and added "other" to my vote just because of how weak I am for the reveal. :D ♡♡♡
I just re-watched the popcorn scene like 3 times a few days ago, I don't even know why, but I think I was looking for something else and found this instead, and it is glorious indeed. :D

The Detective Conan watch! It should get bonus points for doubling as cosplay gear. Very fun :D

I went entirely for the coolness factor and not the plot-relevance factor this time, and voted for the fear baton and the star ring. :D
And I originally started watching in January 2023, when y'all were doing the rewatch, and I never would have started watching otherwise, and I'm eternally grateful. :D ♡♡♡
Also, my phone got entirely bricked last night by something that really, really shouldn't brick it (when I google what happened, it says it's because I tried to root it or break into the source or whatever, and I literally just tried to change a keyboard setting in the totally official "click the settings icon" way *facepalms and grumbles*), so the first thing I thought when I saw a Lin Jing post was "Lin Jing would totally fix my damn phone". xD

Haha, I did the opposite and voted with a cold heart for the most useful thing :D
But the baton is the most fun invention!

Oh no! I hope you can fix it :(

I'd love to have a star ring of my own, so long as I could set the password myself. *g*
So glad the rewatch got you into Guardian! ♥ ♥ ♥

Ha, a highly valid metric. The fear baton is delightful AND improbable AND cool!

It's win-win! So very glad to have you here!! <3 <3 <3
But oh no, so sorry about your phone!! That sucks so much!! :-(((( Yes, where the hell is Lin Jing when you need him? *deducts his bonuses (and gives them to you in compensation)*

The energy detector is very useful in theory, but in practice, the SID doesn't trust the technology enough to make the most of it. Like when it detects Zhang Shi, but it's just assumed to be a malfunction.
The baton has... obvious downsides. XD
It's too hard to control, a bad feature on a weapon. I'd give it a consolation prize because it suits Guo Changcheng and because it's funny.
The tracker is a neat little thing, though I'm not sure it can be credited to Lin Jing. Tacking technology isn't new, although hiding it in jewellery is smart.
The popcorn is good for morale! Not as much as a shield protecting you from surprise attacks though.
The ring also falls into this category: No real use, more about the sentiment. I wonder how long its battery live is.

I wonder what would have happened if Lin Jing had trusted the detector when it went off for Zhang Shi.

YEP! Sometimes he's just really damn GOOD at what he does. *nods*
"I'd give it a consolation prize because it suits Guo Changcheng and because it's funny."
ITA with everything else too, but especially this. :D :D

It's such brilliant technology (and such a great plot device -- I love how it adds to the cosy safety of the SID, when they're feeling besieged).

Haha, yeah. User error.

Hee! I assumed it
magicallyran on ambient/body energy or something. Maybe it's dark energy powered, and uses a tiny tiny bit of Sha Ya's DE?no subject
And wow, how is it almost 7 years already? My 7th anniversary of watching the first episode for the first time will be in July 2025. :)

Same, and I love that they're tied for first place at the moment. :D

Damn, that is SO close to when it originally aired! I'm always so happy and excited for everyone who got to experience that. :D

but I just love Changcheng's fear baton so much.
Me too! I love that they turned his greatest weakness into a strength. *pets his nervous little head* <3 <3 <3

In terms of gizmos, I can name three of my own fics in which Lin Jing makes inventions:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/58411024
People Who Care (if I live or die) - Amedia - 镇魂 | Guardian (TV 2018) [Archive of Our Own]
Lin Jing has invented a ring with a tiny gem in it that enables Ye Huo to focus his flame into a narrow beam like a laser.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/43217808
Less Than Kind - Amedia - 镇魂 | Guardian (TV 2018) [Archive of Our Own]
Lin Jing and Shen Wei are trying to figure out if Xiao Guo is okay after bad guys tried to use an infusion of dark energy to flush out his serum power. At one point Lin Jing uses an unspecified scanning device that looks “like a steampunk View-Master.”
https://archiveofourown.org/works/58411024
Find Me in the Club - Amedia - 镇魂 | Guardian (TV 2018) [Archive of Our Own]
In this fic, Lin Jing has built homing beacons/emergency radios into jewelry for two undercover pairs posing as couples (similar to the bracelet he made for Zhu Hong during the Face-Stealer case). For Zhu Hong & Li Qian he made “a pair of shimmering necklaces, each with a heart-shaped pendant,” while for ChuGuo he made matching signet rings with the same function. (The tech isn’t original, but making it part of the cosplay was fun.)
