Guardian Readalong: Vol. 2, Chapters 3 & 4

Hi, and welcome to this week's installment of the Guardian novel readalong! ♡
Here are last week's chapters, and you can find all previous discussions on the schedule post (vol. 1 part 1, vol. 1 part 2, vol. 2), or via the !readalong tag.
This week's chapters:
- Chapter 3: Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng write a report about their hospital investigation. The concept of karmic lines and merit marks is explained. It turns out that Guo Changcheng can see merit marks, unlike most people, and he has unusually many merits himself. Drunk and heartbroken Zhao Yunlan stumbles into the office and throws up in the bathroom. The SID team supports him (some more than others), and Chu Shuzhi calls Shen Wei to pick Zhao Yunlan up. Shen Wei shows up immediately.
- Chapter 4: Zhao Yunlan is embarrassed and pretends to be asleep while Shen Wei takes care of him. Shen Wei steals a kiss and gets kissed back. Zhao Yunlan tells Shen Wei about the house he bought for both of them, and offers his heart the way he already did in the past. Shen Wei accepts, is overwhelmed with emotions and bites his own writst. They do 'literal sleeping together'. In the morning Zhao Yunlan makes some truly creatively flavored noodles, and gets called to go to the hospital - there are more victims.
The corresponding chapters in the Chinese version on JJWXC and the fan translation are 48, 49 and 50.
Excerpts:
1) Karmic lines and merit marks explained
His whiskers twitched disdainfully as he addressed Guo Changcheng. “The ‘karmic line’ has to do with karma, duh. Actions and consequences. Let’s say you’re walking down the street and a mugger jumps and kills you for no reason. You didn’t do anything to cause that to happen, so it’s an undeserved catastrophe. However, if you’re in a mugger’s way when he comes running out, and he stabs you because you were in his way, then you died as a result of being in his way. Now, that’s bad timing and inevitable fate, so even though it’s a reach, it can be considered a case of cause and effect. But the resulting karmic line would be so light that you could probably brush it off with your hand.”
The cat continued, “Now suppose a mugger came running down the street, recognized you as the guy his wife cheated on him with, and killed you in a rage. You wouldn’t be able to wipe away the karmic line that resulted, but it also wouldn’t be too dark. That indicates that there is a connection, but the consequence is disproportionate to the crime, so the cause and effect aren’t equal. But if a mugger comes running…”
Guo Changcheng, having now been offed by a mugger multiple times, couldn’t help asking, “And that mugger realizes I’m his greatest enemy, whom he’d been planning to kill, and he stabs me to death, the karmic line would be pretty deep, right?”
Daqing bobbed his head approvingly. “The boy can be taught.”
“Then…what’s a merit mark?” Guo Changcheng asked.
“People who’ve accrued merits or sins have a mark behind their ears,” Chu Shuzhi said. “For example, if someone secretly killed someone else, that act would leave a black mark behind their ear even if no one else ever found out and they never faced legal consequences. People used to talk about ‘damaging one’s merits,’ and that’s what they were referring to. Of course, a normal person with no cultivation won’t be able to see it.”
2) Chu Shuzhi calls Shen Wei
Speechless, Zhao Yunlan tried to grab his phone back, but Chu Shuzhi nimbly evaded him, addressing Guo Changcheng and Daqing. “Hurry and hold him down. Hold him down! Look how drunk he is.” He turned to Zhao Yunlan and said, “Listen to me. The way Shen-laoshi looks at you says it all. I don’t believe for a second that he doesn’t feel anything for you. He must just be deep in the closet. As your coworker, I’ll help you out this one time.”
Zhao Yunlan was being restrained by Guo Changcheng and Daqing, who only wanted more chaos in the world. The cat had gone so far as to sit on Zhao Yunlan’s stomach, nearly crushing the air out of him and making him keel over on the spot. “Please show some mercy!” Zhao Yunlan yelped. “I have enough trouble without your help!”
Shen Wei’s voice came from the phone. “What is it?”
Chu Shuzhi waggled his eyebrows at Zhao Yunlan. Shen Wei had picked up on the very first ring. That was a level of attentiveness one couldn’t even get from their own father. This was what Zhao Yunlan called heartbreak?
3) Shen Wei steals a kiss and gets kissed back
On the brink of losing his mind, Zhao Yunlan, through sheer force of will, managed to keep playing dead.
It was more than Shen Wei could possibly stand. Pressing his hands to the bed on either side of Zhao Yunlan, he let their lips brush together, soft as a dragonfly dipping its tail into the water. It lasted only a moment. His eyes were closed, as though he had taken immeasurable comfort from that most fleeting contact. His heart thundered inside his chest, offering the illusion of mortality. For just a second, Shen Wei almost felt human.
There in the dim light, he’d stolen a kiss from the love of his life. His heart soared with elation and sweetness. Even if he had died then and there, he wouldn’t have uttered a word of complaint.
Zhao Yunlan’s mind, however, was perfectly empty. Inside his heart, it felt as though a single strand of hair bore a weight of thousands of pounds. That strand had been stretched past endurance, and now it finally snapped without a sound.
Shen Wei had supposed that the tiniest of stolen kisses would go unnoticed, but before he could straighten back up, the apparent “corpse” on the bed animated, grabbing him with both arms.
Shocked and caught wholly off guard, Shen Wei was dragged down. Zhao Yunlan aggressively flipped them both over, pressing their bodies together.
The scent of alcohol still lingered on Zhao Yunlan’s breath, but his gaze was clear. Peering into Shen Wei’s eyes, he asked quietly, “My lord, what are you doing?”
Shen Wei’s mouth opened, but he was too panicked to speak.
Zhao Yunlan stared at him for a while, complex feelings passing through his eyes. Then he suddenly took hold of Shen Wei’s chin. “And here I always thought my lord was a gentleman. I never imagined you were the type to go around stealing kisses in the dead of night. Such an unprofessional kiss, at that.”
Shen Wei was at a loss for words. “I…”
Even when Zhao Yunlan’s kiss landed on his lips, Shen Wei was still stupefied. He was certain that he was having an absurd but beautiful dream. Helplessly, he reached out and hugged Zhao Yunlan close. The kiss was both exquisitely skilled and playful, threatening to effortlessly peel back Shen Wei’s defenses and leave him at Zhao Yunlan’s mercy.
Nose to nose, Zhao Yunlan said lightly, “Now that is what an expert kiss should be like.”
4) Zhao Yunlan bought a house for Shen Wei
He smoked the entire cigarette before speaking again. Voice low, he said, “I bought it before we went to the mountains. The SID office is going to be relocating, so I’ve been looking all over for a new place. I passed by this neighborhood and decided to check this one out, and it just felt…right, somehow. I got carried away and bought it, even though it wiped out my savings.
“Then I started thinking about how good the transportation options are in that area and how close it is to DCU. I thought, if you were willing to be with me, you wouldn’t need to drive to work anymore and you could sleep a little later in the mornings. I know it’s pretty big—definitely more than two people need, but that means you can have a large study…and I want to get a dog, one that’s not too bright. Once in a while we could stage a Great Battle of the Cat and Dog or something, like some special New Year’s entertainment…”
An uncontrollable tremor overtook Shen Wei’s hands. The file folder crinkled as he trembled.
“But then, surprise! Coming back from the great northwest, it turned out that you can just teleport from one side of the city to the other. Driving? Getting up early?” Zhao Yunlan chuckled. “Mm… But obviously none of that was the point. I was mostly out looking because we need a new office, not because of you. I just…thought about that stuff while I was at it.”
Shen Wei slowly met Zhao Yunlan’s gaze. It seemed much the same as always, but with the teasing stripped away, what remained was the gentleness Zhao Yunlan ordinarily kept deeply hidden. Catching just a glimpse of that rare sight was enough to compel one to drown in it.
5) Zhao Yunlan offers his heart, Shen Wei bites his own wrist
Zhao Yunlan massaged his temples lightly. In a barely audible voice, he said, “I have plenty of assets, but I doubt they’d appeal to you. All I really have to offer is my heart. But if you won’t accept it, then just forget about this.”
The words smashed into Shen Wei’s heart like a stone, unearthing an ancient memory of a voice right by his ear, speaking in the exact same offhand way. “I hold all the world’s famous mountains and rivers in my hand, but what of it? They’re nothing but a bunch of rocks and wild waters. Of all that I am, the only part worth anything may be my heart. If you want it, it’s yours.”
The man before him was the same as always, as if the past had come back to life.
Shen Wei abruptly wrapped his arms around Zhao Yunlan, holding on with what seemed like every ounce of his strength. He squeezed until the man’s bones cracked from the force as he buried his face against Zhao Yunlan’s neck. Then he leaned past Zhao Yunlan’s shoulder and bit into his own wrist, tearing into it so brutally that the bone was nearly exposed.
6) Zhao Yunlan's noodles!
The marvel in Zhao Yunlan’s hands held more wonders: five bowls of cup noodles in a neat row, all still steaming. The combined aroma verged on indescribable.
Shen Wei could only stare.
Zhao Yunlan boldly plopped himself onto his sofa. With the confidence of a leader addressing a country, he said, “From left to right, we have braised beef noodles made with water; aged, pickled cabbage noodles made with milk; mushroom and chicken noodles made in the microwave with some water and butter; seafood noodles—though I thought they were a little bland, so I added a spoonful of sweet bean sauce; and finally, bacon cream noodles made with hot coffee. That one should be quite good. Pick whichever one you’d like to have.”
A touch of embarrassment set in after he reached the end of the list. “Um… I don’t really know how to make anything else. But since you finally visited, I thought only two cup noodles wouldn’t be enough.”
So he’d made five. How…generous?
Shen Wei’s gaze swept across the five steaming cup noodles. He was at an utter loss as to how Zhao Yunlan hadn’t died of food poisoning yet.
But if it was something Zhao Yunlan had made, even if it were a bowl of rat poison, Shen Wei was still willing to eat it all without the tiniest change in expression—though he made sure to choose the most normal cup noodles offered. He also allowed himself a subtle comment. “Processed foods like these aren’t good for the body. You shouldn’t eat too much of them.”
Questions:
How do you like everyone's different ways of supporting Zhao Yunlan in his heartbreak? What do you think about Guo Changcheng's merits and view of his own life? And what are all your Weilan feelings? (Or some of them - all is a lot when it comes to these chapters!) And most importantly, would you eat Zhao Yunlan's noodles, and which flavor would be your favorite? :D
You can answer as many or as few questions as you like, or just comment without answering any of them at all! And if you see this post and you're not actually reading the novel: Hi there, I voraciously want to know what you think about any of this with limited context!
And here is the schedule, and that's where you can sign up to host a post! (This was my first time hosting and it's really fun, FWIW! :))

no subject
Also I'mma probably overdo it on the comment too because hosting this post means that I fully re-read everything, and also chapter 4 is my faaaaaaavorite (I had no idea which one I was getting when I decided to host btw :D), so. :D :D
"He’d gradually come to realize there wasn’t much difference between humans and ghosts. Some ghosts were quite kind, like this headless fellow who always thoughtfully brought a large warm meal when someone had to work overtime to write a report. This gesture made Guo Changcheng, who only had 20 yuan to his name after visiting the post office the day before, feel a springlike warmth."
This is SO SWEET. I also love that they have a lot of ghosts, not just two. :)
“What is wrong with Zhao Yunlan? These days he’s always either in a daze or letting himself think with the wrong head. Does he do a shred of actual work anymore? Has he still not trained the newcomer? Why doesn’t this kid know anything?!”
I absolutely adore DQ being exasperated
and calling for more exposition, and then calmed down by the prospect of a cat house in a tree. :D :D"Guo Changcheng, having now been offed by a mugger multiple times"
This made me snort out loud. :D
"Once a merit mark is dark enough, it will draw divine retribution. Having the Heavens smite you is no joke, and if it reaches that point, the guilty creature won’t be the only one to suffer. If there are lesser yao in the area and they’re not careful, they’ll be affected too. So to keep innocents from harm, and to prevent bad apples like those from appearing, the yao carefully tally everyone’s merits at the Yao Banquet at the end of each year. If anyone’s too out of line, they’ll take care of it internally first."
I don't know if this is from mythology or just from this book, but it's such a morbidly funny concept to me. Like, hurry up, get rid of the problem before it literally becomes everyone else's problem. xD
“Really? I have merits?” Guo Changcheng was boggled at Daqing’s description. “I have a hard life? I don’t, though! My life is pretty great. I’m just kind of useless, that’s all.”
"His boss and colleagues didn’t look down on him for it; rather, they’d allowed him to stay, and they all took care of him. How could all of that not be considered good fortune?"
HE'S SUCH A SWEETHEART. ♡
I love how Chu Shuzhi and GCC help Zhao Yunlan in the bathroom, and DQ just follows them to be a smug asshole about it. xD
"Daqing woke him with a furious punch in the back. “I forgot to ask. How’s my super-luxurious cat house in the trees coming along?”
Dazed, Zhao Yunlan said, “You stupid big fatty, I’ll kill and eat you.”
Daqing jumped onto his shoulder and yowled into his ear. “Meow! Where’s my luxury cat house?!”"
THESE DORKS. :D :D
"Then, before Daqing could explode, Zhao Yunlan speedily signed the report and stood up. “That’s it for me. Good work today, you two.”"
I LOVE that Zhao Yunlan so completely done with absolutely everything, and he still compliments them. ♡
"“It’s so late and cold,” said Guo Changcheng kindly. “You might not be able to get a taxi here. Why don’t I drive—ow!”
Chu Shuzhi had stomped on Guo Changcheng’s foot ferociously under the table."
They did one tiny case together and they already have this vibe, whatever this vibe is. :D :D
"Zhao Yunlan was being restrained by Guo Changcheng and Daqing, who only wanted more chaos in the world."
I'm just kinda shaking my head at everyone and also adore them to pieces. :D :D
"Our boss drank way too much, and now he’s here hugging everyone he can get his hands on."
CSZ is so full of shit and it's beautiful, lmao.
"Zhao Yunlan grabbed a pen holder and hurled it at Chu Shuzhi’s head. Chu Shuzhi dodged while continuing to talk on the phone. “No, no, it’s fine. He’s just drunk and throwing things.”
:D :D :D This whole thing is one of my favorite SID scenes. :D
"Chu Shuzhi hung up and struck a salacious pose, blowing a kiss at Zhao Yunlan."
I would say that I want to SEE this but we kinda already did, when the personality swap was happening. xD
"He had only knocked once before the door to the criminal investigation unit opened from within and a person was shoved out without warning. Shen Wei caught him, and Zhao Yunlan fell headfirst into his arms."
THIS I want to see. :D :D
"Shen Wei didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. He nudged Zhao Yunlan’s shaking hand down. “That’s enough.”"
This is cuter than it has any right to be. xD ♡♡♡
"Shen Wei had left the car running to keep it warm as he went upstairs to collect him. Zhao Yunlan noticed it as soon as he got in, and the gesture warmed his heart."
This is so precious, omg. The whole car scene is. ♡♡♡
I'm obsessed with the kissing in this chapter, like, what else is new, but also THIS is how you do kissing that is right up my alley. :D :D
Alsooooo this is before the kiss, and it's exactly the same thing that ZYL does in the drama. :D "Some time passed, and then, as though bewitched, Shen Wei slowly bent down, leaning in close enough to feel Zhao Yunlan’s breathing."
"I’m not afraid of destiny or being struck down by lightning, and I’m not afraid of you."
♡♡♡!!
I love when Shen Wei nopes out, and then Zhao Yunlan falls down and Shen Wei is immediately like 'you know what, I take that back, I need to help', AW.
"Shen Wei slowly met Zhao Yunlan’s gaze. It seemed much the same as always, but with the teasing stripped away, what remained was the gentleness Zhao Yunlan ordinarily kept deeply hidden."
Every time this happens I just melt into a puddle. ♡♡♡
"The most determined of hearts could never be broken by winds that might cut you to ribbons, or by frost that pierced you like a sword. That power belonged to the open hand extended to you during a long journey, or to the tender voice saying “come home” in your ear."
The part that has this quote was the excerpt I cut last, btw. There's possibly such thing as 'too much Weilan'. xD
Possibly. Sounds fake but okay. xD xD"For a second, Shen Wei was gripped by the desire to interrogate the Heavens themselves. Why did he have to be the Soul-Executing Emissary? Ants, which perished almost as soon as they were born, were permitted to pair off under the sunlight and rain; birds, which lived out in the open, were allowed to find safe harbor surrounded by branches. Among all things that existed between the earth and sky, he had been born peerless and lonely, but there wasn’t even the tiniest fragment of space meant for him. Everyone feared him, offered him deference, plotted against him, or even schemed incessantly to bring about his death."
Break my heart, why don't youuuu.
"“Sorry,” Zhao Yunlan said. He gently eased Shen Wei’s clenched hand open, holding it in his own. Then he leaned down and placed a soft kiss on the back of Shen Wei’s hand, casually tossing the incredibly expensive property deed aside. “If this is too much for you, just pretend I never said a word.”"
Why so sweet, ohgods. ♡♡♡
Asdfghjhgjfdksl IDEK HOW TO COMMENT ON WRIST BITING so I guess I just won't. xD I am being super anticlimactic, dammit, I was going to weird about it. xD xD
“Please shut up.” Zhao Yunlan applied heavy pressure to Shen Wei’s wrist. “Why do you go insane at the drop of a hat?”
One of my number one favorite lines from the entire novel, lmao, FACTS, and also I love that Zhao Yunlan is both taken aback and also doesn't actually take it seriously, like, doesn't legitimize it and doesn't make it more dramatic than necessary. A++ in de-escalation.
"Shen Wei looked at the tight, neat bandage wrapped around his wrist. Holding his breath, he eased himself under the blankets and lay down, feather light, on the empty half of the bed Zhao Yunlan had left for him. After a long moment, he took Zhao Yunlan’s hand in his and held it against his chest, closing his eyes."
♡♡♡!
The illustration of sweating Shen Wei looking at the noodles is hilarious and wonderful and one of my favorite illustrations, just because of his expression. :D :D
And btw I LOVE when Zhao Yunlan's atrocious noodle choices make it into drama fics! :D (My fav: The Secret's In The (Bacon Cream) Sauce by
And also yep, I would legit eat all the noodles other than the coffee ones, and that's literally just because I don't like coffee in the first place. xD

So, just to get this in before I forget, here's my favourite drama fic that includes the noodles: I'll Be Your Shelter by
Also, I adore this animated noodle artwork by 猴汤HT!

I would say that I want to SEE this but we kinda already did, when the personality swap was happening. xD
That's what I picture when I read this, too. :)
Oh, yes, you pulled another quote I forgot and love! "Shen Wei slowly met Zhao Yunlan’s gaze. It seemed much the same as always, but with the teasing stripped away, what remained was the gentleness Zhao Yunlan ordinarily kept deeply hidden."
Every time this happens I just melt into a puddle. ♡♡♡ I've only read it this once, but me too!
no subject
Hee, and now I'm wondering if this behavior in the novel was a literal inspiration for his personality swap self in the drama! Like, let this CSZ have some fun too. :D
"I've only read it this once, but me too!"
There was a similar situation at the end of volume 1 when he tells Shen Wei what he did when he was drunk. "Smiling, Zhao Yunlan turned back. Where his smiles were so often cold or cocky, this one was unusual. It was intentionally gentle and reassuring." And I just can't every time this happens, like DAMN, Zhao Yunlan being tender and soft has my entire heart. ♡♡♡

You are correct of course!
IDEK HOW TO COMMENT ON WRIST BITING so I guess I just won't.
Don’t worry, I will be weird about it for us both!
So, the wrist thing is, like, pretty hot? It’s less biting and more tearing apart your own wrist, which even kinky humans would (and could) not do, so it really drives home the point that Shen Wei is not human. I’m into that❤
And he’s doing this brutal thing to himself as a restraint, because he doesn’t want his true nature to affect Zhao Yunlan. It’s like this micro-cosmos of how Shen Wei is always restraining himself and never hesitates to harm himself.

It's fantastic!!! I kind of wish there was a drama equivalent (though I know that's just greedy).
Alsooooo this is before the kiss, and it's exactly the same thing that ZYL does in the drama. :D
You mean that Shen Wei does? Yeah! I was going to point that out, too, but I forgot. I love when he just... hovers... over sleeping ZYL! <3333

I really like how Chu Shuzhi is trying to set them up by calling Shen Wei!
Here are a couple of quotes that I really liked:
"Chu Shuzhi hung up and struck a salacious pose, blowing a kiss at Zhao Yunlan" after he hangs up with Shen Wei. I really love this version of CSZ!
In the car, Shen Wei murmured "why are you so appallingly bad at taking care of yourself?" I have read so much fic that I don't remember if this is also a line from the show, or just used a lot in in stories, but I really do appreciate this recognition, the lack of glossing over the bad bits about ZYL.
I love reading both ZYL and SW's thoughts about themselves and each other. ZYL reflecting on the many ways SW is caring for him really tug my heartstrings.
I haven't gotten any further on my re-read, but I know that I need to post now instead of waiting to finish!

I adore CSZ here too, he's so fun! (And 100% not wrong about Shen Wei!) I know he has his deadpan fun moments in the drama too, but to be like this he needed a literal personality transplant, lol.
"In the car, Shen Wei murmured "why are you so appallingly bad at taking care of yourself?" I have read so much fic that I don't remember if this is also a line from the show, or just used a lot in in stories, but I really do appreciate this recognition, the lack of glossing over the bad bits about ZYL."
I think there are some equivalents of this in the drama, but I don't know if this exact line is fic-only either (same reason - I grab fic canon and just roll with it all the time :D). The one I can think of off the top of my head is when Shen Wei thinks ZYL is so smart but so stupid, and only says the second part out loud. :)
"I love reading both ZYL and SW's thoughts about themselves and each other. ZYL reflecting on the many ways SW is caring for him really tug my heartstrings."
Ohgods, yes, I feel like this is where all of the feelings really fall out, and even if they don't say everything to each other (and they do say a lot of it, YAY THEM) it's still all described, and just so touching. ♡♡♡

Aaaah Shen Wei!!!
“I hold all the world’s famous mountains and rivers in my hand, but what of it? They’re nothing but a bunch of rocks and wild waters. Of all that I am, the only part worth anything may be my heart. If you want it, it’s yours.”
It’s THE quote!
And what are all your Weilan feelings?
❤❤❤ sums it up
would you eat Zhao Yunlan's noodles, and which flavor would be your favorite?
In this xitter thread , someone actually cooked all these noodles. It’s not as bad as it seems apparently?
Anyway I’m a coward, I would pick braised beef noodles cooked in water.
no subject
I laughed out loud at this. :D :D
But also yep, true, and I think it works out because no one actually doesn't want these things, they just say that/look like they don't want them.
Which yes, it's not how consent works. But they're so obviously okay with this, GOOD FOR THEM.Except Zhao Yunlan not wanting to call Shen Wei, that one is real, but even this is just because he's embarrassed, not because he doesn't want to see him. (And it's CSZ, not Shen Wei, who doesn't give a fuck about consent here, so that also kinda makes it better because CSZ is being a troll and doesn't have any underlying agenda. :P)"❤❤❤ sums it up"
It really does, doesn't it! ♡♡♡
Oh my gods, the noodle thread is glorious, thank you for linking it! :D :D (And I absolutely love the fact that someone decided to do this - fandom is a wonderful place!) I feel vindicated, lmao, THEY DO SOUND YUMMY TO ME. xD (Again, other than the coffee ones, but coffee alone doesn't sound yummy to me either. xD But the others I would so eat, all of them. :D)

From your chapter summary: The SID team supports him (some more than others) - LOLOL!! Novel!DQ is such a gremlin!!
Zhao Yunlan tells Shen Wei about the house he bought for both of them - I usually hate this kind of gesture. (Let people choose their own houses! Make decisions as a couple!) But these two are so weird, I guess they get away with it.
“I have enough trouble without your help!” - HEEE! I love him so much.
Of all that I am, the only part worth anything may be my heart. If you want it, it’s yours. - <33333333333 (I can't remember when I first encountered that line, but it was years and years ago.)
I'd eat noodles #1, #3 and #4. (I don't do cabbage or coffee, and I'm dubious about the milk part, too.) :D
My notes from these chapters:
I'm so interested that the criminal investigation unit is only a part of the SID. What does the rest of the department do? Who runs it? Are there more shenanigans going in the margins? :D
Odds are he isn’t directly related to the person setting down the curse and doesn’t deserve this level of retribution.
The idea of "deserved" retribution makes me all squirmy. /woolly liberal, in favour of mercy, rehabilitation and redemption ;-p
Awww, the description: "Changcheng's paws lay flat on the keyboard." :D :D :D Also Changcheng's view of his life and situation!! *showers him with hearts*
And ahhhhhhh, I love Chu Shuzhi so much in this chapter!! First, he actually asks Changcheng, "What do you not understand?" -- possibly the first time someone has stopped to explain stuff to the kid! And Changcheng didn't even have to ask! Then CSZ pats ZYL on the back, asks "How did you let yourself get this drunk?" and tells Changcheng to get him a cup of water. And then he sneakily calls Shen Wei on ZYL's behalf (which made me go: ahaha, poor ZYL!). :D :D :D Compared to the rest of the SID, CSZ is kindness personified!
Using the wall for support, Zhao Yunlan walked out, avoiding eye contact. In a muffled voice, he said, “I’ve just lost my love. Can’t a man drown his sorrows?”
Aww, he's such a woobie! (Is it bad that I don't feel sorry for him? So much of this problem is of his own making/viewpoint.)
Also love the whole part of Daqing punching ZYL awake and demanding a cat house, and being generally obnoxious and self-centred, and the bickering that ensues. <3 <3 <3
Because Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan are both as subtle as bricks!! EVERYONE KNOWS!! :DDDDDDDDD
And then Shen Wei disarming ZYL!! \o/!! (Chapter 3 is where I live. Everything about it is joy! :DDD)
I love ZYL pretending to be asleep in the car. (Is this the taxi scene from the drama? Or have we already had that?)
the Emissary’s black cloak, a symbol of terror for humans and ghosts alike
See, I get that everyone finds him intimidating, but I'm still not quite sure why. He's implacable (and inauspicious, whatever that means in practice), but he's not unjust, right? He's not capricious or gratuitously cruel. Why are people terrified of him? Is it really a fear of consequences for their own weakness?
He gave a faint sigh and then, barely audible, Shen Wei murmured, “Why are you so appallingly bad at taking care of yourself?”
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! *loves*
Deep down, Zhao Yunlan had always yearned for a certain kind of life: a life two people shared companionably, where they could even enjoy silence together. Neither would find the other annoying or hound them or try to pick fights. They would make space for one another, but there would always be warmth between them. Like they had always lived together, existing in their own private world, needing nothing but each other.
I think this is actually my favourite excerpt from chapter 4. I love that he's not craving Grand Romantic Gestures or High Drama. All he wants is to live happily ever after in a 100k established-relationship curtainfic! But finding someone to share that isn't so easy, because he's destined to Only Love Shen Wei, so he ends up restless, a total player and human disaster, flipping off the whole world.
Love that Shen Wei starts tidying out of habit. (He can visit me anytime.)
Haha, ZYL's plan to get a not-too-bright dog turned into GCC's Samoyed in the drama, didn't it? Xiaomi! :D
The whole new SID office storyline left some artifacts in the drama, but it's never really explained. (Also here, I'm not sure if the office is just for the CIU or the whole SID.)
It seemed much the same as always, but with the teasing stripped away, what remained was the gentleness Zhao Yunlan ordinarily kept deeply hidden. Catching just a glimpse of that rare sight was enough to compel one to drown in it.
Ahhhhhh! This just made me go "Kunlun-era!drama!ZYL!!!" and explode into hearts.
But he was held back by a sworn oath known only to himself. Thousands of years had passed, and yet Shen Wei dared not betray that oath in even the most minuscule way. It was his last remaining connection to that person.
I wonder if this is what the drama's referring to when Shen Wei thinks, at the end of ep 2, Once a promise is made, even mountains can't get in our way. (I made a post asking about this once, and then later decided that maybe the promise was Shen Wei's name. But maybe the line is just a leftover from the novel...)
The "instant familiarity" is definitely also a drama thing. *hearts*
Aww, I'm a bit sad that Shen Wei thinks his entire reason for being in Haixing is ZYL. What about academia?! ;-p
Squeezing till the bones cracked from the force -- OW! (I would be so indignant, as the squeezee. ;-p) Is this just a metaphor, or does ZYL really have cracked ribs and need healing? /unromantic (sorry!)
“Shen Wei!” Taking advantage of Shen Wei’s daze, Zhao Yunlan finally struggled out of his grip, only to find the bedsheets stained crimson. “Is your head full of holes?! It’s not like I abducted you in broad daylight to make you mine. When you shook your head, did I say anything? Did I push? Did you need to start spilling blood just to deter me?”
and
It suddenly struck him that Shen Wei was probably the type of person who’d made “watch out for the quiet ones” such a cliché
and
“Please shut up.” Zhao Yunlan applied heavy pressure to Shen Wei’s wrist. “Why do you go insane at the drop of a hat?”
LOLOLOL! I adore this fated love between an OTT Dramatic Figure of Darkness and Repressed Anguish, and Zhao Yunlan, a scrapper used to dealing with the SID dynamics. ZYL is so ugh and matter-of-fact about it all, because he's totally used to all the weirdos from work. I LOVE HIM! :DDD
Also, I wrote a whole fic about ZYL vs Cooking without having once read the novel, though of course I'd heard about the noodles by fannish osmosis. :-)

I think it's at least partially an instinctual fear. He is Old and Powerful and Terrifying, like a force of nature. People fear him the way they fear a tsunami, or a forest fire - something deep inside them just says "run".
All he wants is to live happily ever after in a 100k established-relationship curtainfic!
Haha, well put!
ZYL is so ugh and matter-of-fact about it all, because he's totally used to all the weirdos from work. I LOVE HIM! :DDD
Right?? Their dynamic is so fun here ♥

AW, thanks! :D ♡♡♡ I'm already doing the next one, hahah, I'm having so much fun with this. :D
"But these two are so weird, I guess they get away with it."
LOL. ♡♡♡ (And also, it's not like he would make Shen Wei live there. He already gave up on it and wasn't going to mention it until Shen Wei kissed him.)
"(I don't do cabbage or coffee, and I'm dubious about the milk part, too.) :D"
*high-five on not doing coffee* xD
"I'm so interested that the criminal investigation unit is only a part of the SID. What does the rest of the department do? Who runs it? Are there more shenanigans going in the margins? :D"
IKR, I'd love to see that too. :D And they already have a lot more going on at the SID too, with all the ghosts working in the background.
"The idea of "deserved" retribution makes me all squirmy. /woolly liberal, in favour of mercy, rehabilitation and redemption ;-p"
Oh, ITA, but I don't generally find ancient belief systems to be particularly comforting, so this is not the worst I guess. xD
"Compared to the rest of the SID, CSZ is kindness personified!"
Ikrrrrrr. ♡♡♡ Such a genuinely kind person and such a terrible troll at the same time. xD
"Aww, he's such a woobie! (Is it bad that I don't feel sorry for him? So much of this problem is of his own making/viewpoint.)"
Oh yep, he's creating this entire problem for himself, which is only proven by the fact that there is no problem anymore once everyone gets fed up with him and literally throws him at Shen Wei. xD
"And then Shen Wei disarming ZYL!! \o/!! (Chapter 3 is where I live. Everything about it is joy! :DDD)"
:D :D :D Agreed!
"(Is this the taxi scene from the drama? Or have we already had that?)"
There's so much touching happening in cars in the novel that even the drama ended up doing in twice. :D (And I feel like both of the drama scenes are somehow even more intimite than the novel ones? Censorship my ass. :P)
"See, I get that everyone finds him intimidating, but I'm still not quite sure why. He's implacable (and inauspicious, whatever that means in practice), but he's not unjust, right? He's not capricious or gratuitously cruel. Why are people terrified of him? Is it really a fear of consequences for their own weakness?"
He's powerful, mysterious and weird-looking, and his origin sounds scary? I don't think people generally give it a lot of thought before they're afraid of something. xD
"All he wants is to live happily ever after in a 100k established-relationship curtainfic!"
Heeeeeeeeeee. :D
"Haha, ZYL's plan to get a not-too-bright dog turned into GCC's Samoyed in the drama, didn't it? Xiaomi! :D"
Xiaomi is in the novel too, for just a few brief mentions, but they're all adorable. :D
"Ahhhhhh! This just made me go "Kunlun-era!drama!ZYL!!!" and explode into hearts."
YES THIS omggggggggg. ♡♡♡ And it happens so soon after it just happened at the end of volume 1, which is also the last time he saw Shen Wei, which means that he now simply does it every time he meets Shen Wei?? ♡♡♡ *MELTS COMPLETELY AND ENTIRELY* This is always my favorite Zhao Yunlan, hands down.
"(I made a post asking about this once, and then later decided that maybe the promise was Shen Wei's name. But maybe the line is just a leftover from the novel...)"
It probably is a leftover from the novel, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have any additional meaning in the drama - they seem to always create at least a bit more context? I love the name idea, and also the idea that it's about them meeting again. ♡
"Aww, I'm a bit sad that Shen Wei thinks his entire reason for being in Haixing is ZYL. What about academia?! ;-p"
I feel like novel Shen Wei just doesn't give all that many fucks about his job? xD
"Squeezing till the bones cracked from the force -- OW! (I would be so indignant, as the squeezee. ;-p) Is this just a metaphor, or does ZYL really have cracked ribs and need healing? /unromantic (sorry!)"
I read 'cracked' as 'they made a loud sound' and not 'they broke', lol. My bones make sounds all the time, maybe that's why. xD
"LOLOLOL! I LOVE HIM! :DDD"
YESSS. :D I absolutely love his reaction here and how de-escalating it is, but I never thought it's because he deals with weird people all the time, hahah, it totally is. :D (Also, one my favorite Weilan text posts is "What is the greatest ship dynamic ever and why is it shabby trash gremlin x cosmic horror". :D :D)

Yeah, 100% - it's one of those "would absolutely hate it in any other kind of relationship, but with these two I'm just "AWWWW"´moments. :D
The idea of "deserved" retribution makes me all squirmy. /woolly liberal, in favour of mercy, rehabilitation and redemption ;-p
Same. I'm not in favour of this concept either.
Aww, he's such a woobie! (Is it bad that I don't feel sorry for him? So much of this problem is of his own making/viewpoint.)
And again, I'm entirely with you on this! I really can't feel sorry for him, I just want SW to pet him and take care of him. *g*
Because Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan are both as subtle as bricks!! EVERYONE KNOWS!! :DDDDDDDDD
RIGHT?????? :D
I love ZYL pretending to be asleep in the car. (Is this the taxi scene from the drama? Or have we already had that?)
Yeah, I think it's the taxi scene's equivalent. (But I like the taxi scene more, tbh.)
All he wants is to live happily ever after in a 100k established-relationship curtainfic!
I love how you put that! But also, that his ideal relationship is one where they can just be quiet together, and make speace for each other without constantly bothering each other. ♥
(I don't think drama!ZYL knows that about himself quite so clearly, not at this point ...)
Squeezing till the bones cracked from the force -- OW!

How do you like everyone's different ways of supporting Zhao Yunlan in his heartbreak?
I definitely appreciate Chu Shuzhi a lot here!
Some thoughts/reactions from me:
He'd gradually come to realize there wasn't much difference between humans and ghosts.
Awww, yay, Xiao-Guo!
"What is wrong with Zhao Yunlan? These days he's always either in a daze or letting himself think with the wrong head. Does he do a shred of actual work anymore? Has he still not trained the newcomer? Why doesn't this kid know anything?!"
Very good point, Daqing! I mean, seriously, ZYL didn't even delegate that to anyone else?
Love that Chu Shuzhi defends ZYL a bit, though,
And I really like that they actually finally explain some stuff to GCC there.
Guo Changcheng, having now been offed by a mugger multiple times
LOL! I really love priest's humour. And having a translation that properly gets it across! (What I wouldn't give for a TYK translation of this quality ...)
"Really? I have merits?" Guo Changcheng was boggled at Daqing's description. "I have a hard life? I don't, though! My life is pretty great. I'm just kind of useless, that's all."
Awwww!
"A bunch of assholes kept forcing drinks on me. What was I supposed to do?"
"Don't give me that shit," Chu Shuzhi said. "If you honestly didn't want to drink, who'd be able to force you?"
Hee! I really enjoy the dynamic between these two, and CSZ deciding he's had enough of ZYL's moping, and calling SW. And the way GCC and DQ hold ZYL down! :D
Chu Shuzhi waggled his eyebrows at Zhao Yunlan. Shen Wei had picked up on the very first ring. That was a level of attentiveness one couldn't even get from their own father. This was what Zhao Yunlan called heartbreak?
CSZ's perspective is a delight. :D
Chu Shuzhi hung up and struck a salacious pose, blowing a kiss at Zhao Yunlan. "He's at your beck and call. You've got this in the bag. Don't forget my matchmaker's feast."
LOVE IT. :D
And I love how exasperated SW is, and how ready to take care of ZYL (of course)!
In sharp contrast to the frigid smell that surrounded the Emissary, Shen Wei's scent was refreshing, like the lingering hint of soap on fresh laundry. Beneath the Emissary's black cloak, a symbol of terror for humans and ghosts alike, was someone pristine and gentle.
YESSSSSSSSSSSS
(The drama leaned into that so much more, but even novel!SW with his background is this underneath, no matter what he thinks of himself. ♥ ♥ ♥ )
People around Zhao Yunlan came and went. When he was single, he was happy to walk the blurry line between romance and friendship to preserve his confidence. He'd pursued Shen Wei the same way he'd pursued plenty of others, but somehow, ever since the hope of romance between them seemed to wither on the vine rather than blossoming, everyone else he met seemed dull and uninteresting.
Rightly so! I mean, who could measure up to Shen Wei?! *g*
And I love this little look int Zhao Yunlan's approach to romance in general.
This is the dream! I feel you, ZYL, I feel you so much.
I love how the drama played puzzle pieces with so many things from the novel, and how they combined this scene with SW taking ZYL home after the mugging, while the mugging aftermath in the drama got the oinment scene mixed in ... such fun, and really a masterclass in how to do adaptation just right. It's not about exactly copying anything, it's about getting the spirit of the thing in while adapting things to the new medium, and the more I'm reading the novel, the more impressed I am with the scriptwriters. (And I was already pretty impressed before!)
He was certain that he was having an absurd but beautiful dream. Helplessly, he reached out and hugged Zhao Yunlan close.
♥ ♥ ♥
Did you do something terrible to me once, or...are you afraid of falling into my trap?
Oh, OUCH!
Shen Wei had believed that Zhao Yunlan would never know he was the sole reason for Shen Wei's existence, or that he alone was why Shen Wei had made it this far.
See, and here's the bit I don't like about their novel dynamic. *sighs*
The very first time he'd laid eyes on Shen Wei, he'd known he liked him. He'd initially thought it was just because Shen Wei was so perfectly his type and had let himself gloss over how natural the instant familiarity between them felt.
Another bit that made it into the drama so well!
He squeezed until the man's bones cracked from the force
Okay, no! I had to look at the Chinese here, and, that's a mistranslation - he does NOT break his bones, OMG! He hugs him so tightly, his bones make a creaking (咯咯) sound.
The wrist-biting illustration is great!
A human life lasted only a few dozen years. It came and went like a shimmer of light on water. A single thought filled Shen Wei's mind: was he not worthy of even this tiny, fleeting fragment of time?
♥ ♥ ♥
Zhao Yunlan froze for a second, but Shen Wei smiled, sounding almost calm as he repeated, "I accept. In this lifetime, whether dead or alive, I won't let you go again. Even if one day you've had enough or tire of me, even if you want to leave me, I'll never let you go."
They are so NORMAL about each other, LOL! That would be terrible in any other context, but here, I love it.
What I don't love is the aftermath:
There was no room for relief; mostly he just felt exhausted.
Wasn't being in a relationship all about the give and take of flirtation? Romance? Flowers under the full moon? Why was it about blood when it came to him?
Because that just sounds dire and depressing. There should be some joy here!
(When it comes to wrist-biting, I prefer the TYK scene - of course, there its Wen Kexing biting Zhou Zishu's wrist, not his own, but also, it's such a lovely moment of intimacy and acceptance, and who they are - the way they're on the same wavelength.)
Shen Wei's eyes were still locked on him. "If you must die, it must be in my arms and by my hand."
Awww, and I'm back to "only these two!" ♥
AND THEN WE HAVE NOODLES. WITH AN ILLUSTRATION. ♥ ♥ ♥
He was at an utter loss as to how Zhao Yunlan hadn't died of food poisoning yet.
♥ ♥ ♥
Version comparison: I didn't find any huge differences this time, but there are several smaller bits. I'll just quote the ones that struck me:
When SW drags ZYL away from the SID after CSZ calls him, there's this bit in the fan translation:
And during the little look at ZYL's past relationships, there's this:
And this one, just before ZYL flips them over, is an iconic line; I can't believe it's not in the version the official translation worked with:
And a bit later, there's this bit, after ZYL asks about the reasons SW has been holding back:

Thank you so much for this -- and the excerpts!
Because that just sounds dire and depressing. There should be some joy here!
Yeah, but from his POV -- the first time they kissed, SW fled his own body and ended up in hospital. And this time SW has torn his own wrist open. I can imagine some exhaustion setting in, you know?
Zhao Yunlan's slightly intoxicated brain is incredibly awake, "Soul Slayer? So what if he's the Soul Slayer? If I like him then he's mine, to hell with everyone else!"
Oh wow! You're right, why would they cut that?

Yesss. ♡♡♡ I also really love the additional layer of 'he literally actively fought to be this' that the novel has. (But as I said before, they're separate characters to me, I wouldn't want drama Shen Wei to have this background too.)
"Okay, no! I had to look at the Chinese here, and, that's a mistranslation - he does NOT break his bones, OMG! He hugs him so tightly, his bones make a creaking (咯咯) sound."
I never considered that he broke his bones because my own bones are loud af, so all I thought of was the sound of cracking your knuckles - it's not even a mistranslation, it's just the same word. :D
"The wrist-biting illustration is great!"
Oh, forgot to flail about this. xD YESSS IT IS. ♡♡♡
"(When it comes to wrist-biting, I prefer the TYK scene - of course, there its Wen Kexing biting Zhou Zishu's wrist, not his own, but also, it's such a lovely moment of intimacy and acceptance, and who they are - the way they're on the same wavelength.)"
I still don't know anything else about that scene, but I did accidentally find out like a week ago that it's someone else's wrist and I went nope, but also if it was Weilan I would 100% take that too, so I guess I don't much care whose wrist it is in the end. xD xD
"I'm sensing the peculiar vibe of a reverse couple. Our Chief is such a slut, could it be..."
Lol what, does he mean switching? :D
"At this age, Zhao Yunlan is smart enough and experienced enough to realise that when a man looks at someone he likes, and doesn't see tiny waist long legs big butt, but sees the desire for a peaceful home, that's definitely not lust."
AW?? ♡♡♡ (I also love that DQ knows what dirty pictures ZYL has as his desktop background. xD)
"Soul Slayer? So what if he's the Soul Slayer? If I like him then he's mine, to hell with everyone else!"
Omggggg, this IS iconic! And very (novel) Kunlun too. I have no idea why it would be removed??
"As for the second reason... isn't that bullshit? Humans die and become ghosts too, maybe someday I'll..."
I saw this in the summary of the fan translation, where I took the chapter numbers from, and thought 'oh, in the official version Shen Wei didn't get to freak out about ZYL talking about himself dying, for once", lol.
Thank you for always comparing the versions, there's so much good stuff there! ♡♡♡

Also it had somehow not ever stuck in my brain that the noodle banquet was ZYL's version of cooking breakfast for his sleepover date. (Eggs, Yunlan. Eggs is traditional.) I am jealous of the variety of flavors of instant noodles available (much like the variety of flavors of potato chip). I would probably rank them in order of most likely to not be gross: braised beef; mushroom and chicken (probably actually food); seafood with sweet bean paste (might work); bacon cream with coffee; cabbage with milk (danger danger). But then I thought 'add a squirt of kewpie mayonnaise to your ramen' sounded gross and it was actually tasty...
(I am, actually, inspired to go through Beryl Shereshewsky's Youtube playlist of instant noodle hacks. The one I tried - making shrimp flavor with coconut milk - was actually good.)

Ikrrrrrr. ♡♡♡ And the fact that Zhao Yunlan says the same thing without knowing that he already said it in the past, like, ahhh. It actually doesn't happen often that one of those intentionally emotional lines actually GETS ME, but this one sure does. :D
Someone should show this playlist to Zhao Yunlan
and watch Shen Wei die inside. :D :D (Also he's soooo earnest about his breakfast attempt that he could literally make anything and it would be the cutest damn thing. :D)
