Scene discussion: Episode 40: Zhu Hong and the Yashou leaders

Location of scene: 29:03-30:00

English dialogue from the subs by Kayoku, QC by Solo

In the Yashou forest, Ying Chun, Ya Qing, and Fourth Uncle are sitting outside arguing about Yashou matters. Zhu Hong comes out of the hut/cabin and crosses her arms over her chest, looking displeased.

Screencap of Zhu Hong from Guardian

She chastises them: "Argue, argue, always arguing! Aren't you fed up, arguing for dozens of years?" (吵吵吵。就知道吵。 都吵了几十年了, 烦不烦呀。)

Screencap of the Yashou leaders from Guardian

She comes over to them and asserts her authority as Yashou High Chief and complains a little: "I, your High Chief, I'm the one who had a crush on the Lord Guardian, and was the Black-Cloaked Envoy's rival for his love. I've come here during my day off in order to host the meeting. It's not easy, okay?" (你们的大族长我当年可是暗恋过镇魂今主跟黑袍使干过架的人。这次专门趁放假回来给你们主持大会。我容易吗我。)

They smile. To me, it seems like they're smiling because they've been caught arguing by Zhu Hong.

Screencap of Ya Qing from Guardian

Screencap of Ying Chun from Guardian

Screencap of Fourth Uncle from Guardian

Fourth Uncle tells Zhu Hong they know they were wrong: "Well, Sweetie... no, no, High Chief, we know we did wrong. It's your turn, go ahead." (那个阿红啊。。。不不。。。大族长。我们知道错了。你来说。你来说。)

Screencap of Zhu Hong from Guardian

Zhu Hong makes a declaration: "Now I have an announcement. Seeking peace, pursuing development, I herewith open the Yashou convention for internal reform and advanced exchange of ideas." (下面我宣布。谋和平求发展,亚兽族内部改革大会暨先进思想交流大会现在正式开始。)

Screencap of Zhu Hong from Guardian

There's so much worldbuilding potential from this short scene. It touches on the differences and disagreements between the Yashou tribes, but also shows that they want to work together. Zhu Hong has come into her own as leader of the Yashou, but can't help showing her annoyance at their squabbling. I like that Ya Qing is part of the group -- it shows that her past actions were forgiven because she joined forces with the other Yashou leaders at the crucial moment.

Questions:
What do you imagine is happening with the Yashou tribes under Zhu Hong's leadership?
What do you see as the future of the Yashou?
What do you think Zhu Hong wants for the Yashou now? What does she want to achieve?
Do the other Yashou leaders take Zhu Hong seriously and listen to her? (I think they do, but the scene is open to interpretation.)
Zhu Hong says she came on her day off. Is she still working at the SID?

Thoughts, reactions, squee, fanwork recs, anything related to this scene welcome!

Awesome choice of scene, yay, and a really great post. I especially love the screencaps of them all smiling, and of course, Zhu Hong boasting about having been the Envoy's rival in love. ♥!!!

What do you imagine is happening with the Yashou tribes under Zhu Hong's leadership?

A lot of bickering, hee! I like to think that some of the younger members of the tribes are starting to think about what they want to do, inspired by Zhu Hong's choices as well as their leaders' advice. And maybe some of the more established, business-minded Yashou are thinking about trade opportunities (medicines!) and what that might mean going forward for them as a community? In other words, I think Zhu Hong just being who she is opens up the opportunity for / possibility of closer ties with the humans of Dragon City, and hopefully they're all thinking through how to do that without losing the things about their village/tribe cultures that are important to them. (I'm sure Ya Qing has a lot of thoughts on the subject! *g*)

And, as you say, it looks like the dissent between the Crows and the others has been well and truly laid to rest, which is lovely. Zhu Hong doesn't single Ya Qing out or give any sign of mistrusting her -- it's just "here are my tribe leaders!" <333

What do you see as the future of the Yashou?

I hope they flourish and expand. If their young people start going to university, some will probably decide to stay in the city, but hopefully others will come back with knowledge and ideas that can sustain their way of life (and maybe a human or Dixingren partner, for some of them). Plus, they could use a lawyer or two to protect their land from encroachment by developers and their IP. ;-p

What do you think Zhu Hong wants for the Yashou now? What does she want to achieve?

I don't know if she has a cohesive idea of how the future should look? She says "pursuing development", but that's pretty vague. I suspect she wants members of the tribes to be free to be able to follow in her footsteps -- moving to the city, etc. Maybe she's arranged scholarships and housing for them so they can attend school and university? (I like the idea of Li Qian taking in Yashou boarders, fwiw. She has that big empty house, now.)

Do the other Yashou leaders take Zhu Hong seriously and listen to her?

I think there's some wry amusement at being scolded and bossed around by a junior, but I think they take her seriously, too, and they're proud of her and happy to see her coming into her own.

Zhu Hong says she came on her day off. Is she still working at the SID?

I like to think so! Even if it's just part-time, as a liaison.

Yes yes yes to all of this! :D

I feel like Zhu Hong is the right leader at the right time, in terms of the Yashou and their future.

Ooh, this is making me wonder how different things would have been if Ya Qing had won the leadership contest (after changing sides). Like, how would her vision for the Yashou differ from Zhu Hong's? Would she be less inclined to view all the tribes together, even from the position of high chief? Would she be willing to negotiate with humans? Hmm...

They smile. To me, it seems like they're smiling because they've been caught arguing by Zhu Hong.

They're also smiling because she's making a joke of it, what with the "being the Black-Cloaked Envoy's rival". And a bit, wryly, because Zhu Hong is still new in the role and they've only just started taking her seriously in it.

I like that Ya Qing is part of the group -- it shows that her past actions were forgiven because she joined forces with the other Yashou leaders at the crucial moment.

Yes! I really like that they've well and truly moved on from that, and are moving forward together. They know they're all on the same side now, and holding a grudge against Ya Qing and her tribe would undermine the work they're doing right from the start.

What do you imagine is happening with the Yashou tribes under Zhu Hong's leadership?

I don't think she has a coherent vision, yet - none of them do. They're still figuring it out at this point. But she wants Yashou to have choices, and for the different Yashou tribes and the humans to work together in a way that will benefit everyone. I think working out how to best approach that is part of what they're meeting to discuss here.

What do you see as the future of the Yashou?

I think whatever they do, some of them will want to live in a more traditional manner and some will want to live among humans, but either way, I hope they'll be officially recognised and their autonomy respected, and that'll take a lot of political work as well as social change.

Do the other Yashou leaders take Zhu Hong seriously and listen to her? (I think they do, but the scene is open to interpretation.)

I think they've started to. They seem like they're open to what she's doing, willing to listen and work with her, but it doesn't seem to me like they've been at it for a long time yet. It's all still new to them.

Zhu Hong says she came on her day off. Is she still working at the SID?

It sounds like it! And my personal headcanon is that she starts out still working at the SID while getting the work of actually being High Chief off the ground, but it's a transitional period, and she'll eventually stop working for the SID, if only because having the Yashou High Chief under someone else's authority isn't great, politically. She'll probably keep working closely with the SID, but it's not the same thing. (And also it's got to be hard, with Zhang Shi being fake!Zhao Yunlan and all ...)

What a lovely write-up and post!! :D

I always loved that line about being the rival for Zhao Yunlan - The Lord Guardian's affections XD XD XD XD

I also loved how they were bickering in the beginning too :D It gave off such a family-at-the-dinner-table-arguing vibe :D

What do you imagine is happening with the Yashou tribes under Zhu Hong's leadership?
What do you see as the future of the Yashou?
- Oo what a great great question! I always imagined that Zhu Hong would try to unify all of the Yashou tribes. Or, if not unify, bring them together to work together versus staying so isolated. I think Zhu Hong realization isolation will eventually lead to the Yashou tribes possibly dying out. So, I've always envisioned that she would try to be a unifying factor for the Yashou :D

What do you think Zhu Hong wants for the Yashou now? What does she want to achieve? - I think she wants to make sure that her people, not just the Snake Tribe, but all of the Yashou don't splinter off. I think she could see how the Yashou tribe could possibly have a parallel to the people of Dixing, where chaos and war occurred, all because of differences and such, and how easy it had been for Ye Zun to pull in those Yashou who were discontent with how their lives were and I think Zhu Hong wants to try and make sure it never gets to that tipping point again. So, peace, I guess and prosperity/happiness for the tribes :) I think that's what I'm trying to say here LOL :D

Do the other Yashou leaders take Zhu Hong seriously and listen to her? (I think they do, but the scene is open to interpretation.) - I think they do too. I think Fourth Uncle has definitely learned his lesson with under-estimating and undermining her efforts to help with things, High Chief-ness aside. I think all of them respect her at this point of the series.

Zhu Hong says she came on her day off. Is she still working at the SID? - My head cannon has always put her in the slot of 'comes when there's an emergency', or she's bored. More like a consultant now, I suppose, than full time SID member. Like when everything hits the fan she's there to help her SID family, but also too, when she needs a break from the responsibilities of the HC, I could totally see her strolling over to the SID for a break. :D

What an excellent write-up! I enjoyed reading the breakdown (and the pics!!) and your questions. :D Thank you so much for writing it!!!!

This is a really great point! 100% agreed!

I also really like your thoughts on Zhu Hong and the SID. :D

Oh, yes, good point! That's really cool. I wonder how much having left the village and lived in the city, working at the SID, helps her see the Yashou as a single nation, whereas it might be natural for those living in their separate villages/tribes to be more focused on the differences between Snakes and Flowers and Crows?

I think she could see how the Yashou tribe could possibly have a parallel to the people of Dixing, where chaos and war occurred, all because of differences and such, and how easy it had been for Ye Zun to pull in those Yashou who were discontent with how their lives were and I think Zhu Hong wants to try and make sure it never gets to that tipping point again.

Oh, yes! That, too! <333

More like a consultant now, I suppose, than full time SID member.

Yesss! After all, there is precedent for foreign leaders to consult at the SID. *g*

I have nothing useful to say, except that all the expressions in your screencaps are fabulous--those little flirty smiles, and Zhu Hong's look of pleased, slightly impatient restraint!
I do think they take her seriously, but with the caveat that they expect her to get the job done, and will hold her to high standards. Which, being Zhu Hong, of course she'll live up to.
(Also, 暗恋 is a great word to know!)
