Focus On: Shen Wei tucking Zhao Yunlan into bed and dealing with his disaster apartment, ep 8

The scene that leads up to this is the Taxi Scene, beautifully covered by [personal profile] melinoel616.

Location of the scene: episode 8, starting at 25:36. I'm choosing to treat this as a single scene, even though it's broken up by Zhu Jiu doing villain things in a forest.

Everything about episode 8's crucial relationship scenes is catnip to me. In fact, a description of what happens here -- starting with Shen Wei picking Zhao Yunlan off the curb and taking him home -- was held out to me as a carrot to get me to watch the show properly, instead of catching bits of it on Youtube and thinking that the professor was awful pretty. Needless to say, it worked a treat.

This post features Shen Wei's Microexpression Theatre and a special Zhao Yunlan 'I have an ow, but I don't need any help, but please notice I am suffering, but also I am FINE' Cocktail of Emotional Damage.

Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan enter the apartment with Zhao Yunlan's arm draped over Shen Wei's shoulders, and Shen Wei's arm around Zhao Yunlan's waist. Zhao Yunlan casually tosses his keys away without locking the door, and they head to the bed which is so conveniently placed in the middle of the living room.

There are some wine bottles by the bed, as well as slippers and I think a boxing glove.

zhao yunlan in bed

Shen Wei lowers Zhao Yunlan to the mattress carefully and he curls up on the bed, boots and all, looking like he's hurting:

zyl with a stomach ache

Meanwhile, Shen Wei starts to look around. I always wonder what goes through his mind on seeing Zhao Yunlan's disaster of an apartment. Shen Wei decorates with antiques and books; Zhao Yunlan decorates with robots, booze, and sports equipment. It's intimate, of course, seeing the place where Zhao Yunlan lives for the first time, but it's also a cluttered mess. And that, combined with the stomach pains, basically screams I don't take good care of myself.

Zhao Yunlan tells Shen Wei he doesn't know where his stomach medicine might be, "Try the fridge." Shen Wei opens it and rears back in disgust. I love this moment, and I love his reaction:

sw with finger over nose

Instead of pinching his nostrils shut, he delicately places a forefinger across his nose. It's so elegantly disdainful, and reminiscent of older times: you can imagine him draping a sleeve of his ancient robe across the lower half of his face to shield himself from the horrors of Zhao Yunlan's fridge.

Shen Wei sternly asks "What do you usually eat?" Zhao Yunlan tells him "I ate hot pot two days ago. Yesterday I went boozing with friends," while Shen Wei stares at the date on a carton of something (milk?) with grave suspicion.

sw with milk carton

Shen Wei reacts to this helpful information with a tiny eyeroll and a longsuffering stare into the middle distance, which intensifies as Zhao Yunlan tells him he hasn't eaten at all today: he looks like he's questioning all his life choices and asking himself if this man could really be (have been, will become) Kunlun.

shen wei exasperated again

Then he turns around and pointedly says "No wonder you're suffering. You were asking for it." Zhao Yunlan doesn't react, just winces in pain.

Shen Wei gives a put-upon sigh that is a LOT, for him, drapes his finger over his nostrils again and delves into the fridge to find the medicine.

He returns to Zhao Yunlan, hands him the medicine and says "I'll get you some warm water". Zhao Yunlan responds: "Don't bother, I'll swallow them dry." There is a pause, then Shen Wei reacts by stepping forward and abruptly yanking the pill bottle away from Zhao Yunlan's grasp. We get a very close focus on their hands touching:

shen wei and zyl hands

Zhao Yunlan looks up at him with a hint of his babyfaced, innocent 'What did I do?' expression.

zyl innocent look

And Shen Wei, who is still very much in Stern Annoyed Professor mode, glares down at him and turns away with another tiny eyeroll, his entire posture expressing Why Are You Like This and Why Do I Love You.

shen wei exasperated

Of course, to get water, he has to enter the kitchen. Evidence suggests that Zhao Yunlan ate an orange and drank some booze (with Da Qing?) recently, otherwise it's just a mess, with one half of the sink full of dishes. Shen Wei grimly starts filling a kettle with water, looks around and sighs again.

We cut away to Zhu Jiu, and when we come back Shen Wei has taken off his suit coat and rolled up his sleeves to wash a glass. This shot is here purely for the sexy lighting on his hands and the focus on the Chain:

shen wei dishwashing

And this one is here to show that the sleeve garters are doing a great support acting job, showing off Shen Wei's biceps:

shen wei arm garters

Shen Wei comes back with the pills and a glass of water. Zhao Yunlan is curled up tight on the bed, and Shen Wei says Zhao Yunlan's name twice to wake him up, then shakes his shoulder.

In response, Zhao Yunlan turns over, away from him, and Shen Wei's frown tightens as he looks down at him. I imagine at this point he's saying to himself ‘take your medicine you infuriating beautiful man, or must I force feed you your pills?' but he doesn't follow through.

So far the scene was without music, but here a delicate piano begins to play as Shen Wei kneels on the bed and begins to take off Zhao Yunlan's boots (fashion note: possibly these are Yeezy desert boots).

shen wei takes zyl's boots off

shen wei hand on zyl ankle

When he's done, he puts his hand on Zhao Yunlan's ankle and pulls the blanket over him, puts another cushion down by Zhao Yunlan's head, then tucks in the duvet a little more.

shen wei tucks zyl in

Then he starts folding Zhao Yunlan's clothes. We see it in closeup first, and then the camera pulls out to show us that Shen Wei is sitting at the foot of the bed. Every time he puts an item of clothing down, he gently smoothes it with his hands:

shen wei hands clothing closeup

shen wei folds clothes

Then he's interrupted, and we see the Envoy side of him take over as the Regent's message arrives, exposing his identity as a 'senior official using the name of Shen Wei'.

shen wei envoy look

Shen Wei checks to see that ZYL is still asleep, then erases the message and replaces it, and returns to his favorite hobby, staring at Zhao Yunlan asleep. Zhao Yunlan's face has smoothed out, he no longer looks like he's in pain, and the lighting here is chef's kiss:

zyl in bed angelic

Looking at him, Shen Wei's expression seems to settle into quiet satisfaction, as if he's saying to himself, Worth It.

And end scene!

What I love about this scene: I love Shen Wei coming in to take care of Zhao Yunlan's everything and also scold him a little bit. I love Zhao Yunlan's contradictory behavior as he seems to both invite caretaking and repel it.

I love the lighting, which makes them both look luminously beautiful. I love the caretaking and the touching.

I love the way this scene is infused with character from beginning to end, on both sides. It says so much about Zhao Yunlan that his apartment is a disaster, and that he is pretty much not interested when it comes to looking after himself. (And yes, Da Qing lives there too, but who could expect a cat to do any housework at all?)

Shen Wei's response is so telling, so different from later scenes where Zhao Yunlan blatantly asks his Service Dom to take care of him, and Shen Wei reacts with fond indulgence. Here, there's none of that: he is pissed and exasperated and his body language expresses that beautifully. But then, once Zhao Yunlan falls asleep, we see the sternness and disapproval give way to an aching tenderness.

We see it in the way he handles Zhao Yunlan as he tucks the duvet over him and removes his boots, as well as the careful way he deals with his clothes, and we see it in the intense look he gives Zhao Yunlan when he's done tidying. And we know that he will stay by Zhao Yunlan's side all night.

Questions:

Why do you think that Zhao Yunlan refuses to take his medicine?
Do you think this is the first time Shen Wei stayed all night by Zhao Yunlan (Kunlun)'s side?

If you know of any fanworks that feature this particular moment, please share. And of course I'd love to know what you think about this scene!

I feel like I should be able to comment thoughtfully on this lovely post, but I keep getting stuck on "how is he so beautiful." Excellent choice of screencaps, oh dear. The way his eyelashes flutter down in the picture just above "Of course, to get water, he has to enter the kitchen.," delicately expressing "how is this my life and why am I not unhappy with it," oh dear.

Okay, having gotten that out of my system. "Why does Zhao Yunlan refuse to take his medicine?" is an interesting question. My main impression is that he's just kind of in roll-up bug mode, leave me alone to be miserable I don't want to move or think or do anything, but you could also read it as a hint that he doesn't completely trust Shen Wei at this point, not enough to let Shen Wei feed him what could be anything (in principle). And the message-erasing thing makes the point that he's kind of right not to trust Shen Wei completely, either.

I love the way this scene is infused with character from beginning to end, on both sides.
Yes! The dialogue is minimal (except for Zhao Yunlan's horrifying explanation of his eating habits), and their expressions and body language carry the whole thing and say so much about the situation and who they are, individually and with each other.

(Shen Wei is sitting at the foot of the bed. Every time he puts an item of clothing down, he gently smoothes it with his hands
chalk up one for my theory that Shen Wei relaxes by ironing his beautiful clothes.)

Ahhhhh, this scene! You have done it beautiful justice in screencaps and descriptions! ♥____♥

I confess, it's taken me an embarrassingly long time to think about this scene because I always get caught up in the pretty and the caretaking. :D But what strikes me about it now is that I think Zhao Yunlan's contradictory behavior stems from: no one else takes care of him like this. (And may never have taken care of him like this, at least not for a very long time.) No one else makes sure he got home safely and helps him to the bed when he's in pain. No one else asks if he has medicine and waits to see if he'll take it. It's not a slam on Da Qing (because: cat) or anyone from the SID, because I think Zhao Yunlan tries hard not to reveal this level of vulnerability to the SID team. He's their boss, even if he doesn't act very boss-like. I'm not sure, myself, how comfortable Zhao Yunlan is being so vulnerable around Shen Wei, so the contradictory behavior seems right to me. I think Zhao Yunlan welcomes Shen Wei's care, but also isn't sure how to react to it. Especially because his pain and disaster eating habits are things he's used to. Shen Wei's caretaking and reactions are more than just acquaintance-polite -- only someone who cares him would be so pissed at him for being like this. I think Zhao Yunlan must be taken aback by that.

I love how pissed Shen Wei is! If this is Kunlun, how could Kunlun live like this? How could he treat himself in this way? This (beginning with the earlier taxi scene) is the first Shen Wei sees of the private Zhao Yunlan, and he wasn't prepared for this level of disaster. Poor Shen Wei. I always figure he's like, "give me strength," and then he's like, "I will show you that you are worthy and deserving of being cared for, Zhao Yunlan." ♥

his pain and disaster eating habits are things he's used to.

It did strike me that Yunlan's reaction to having gastritis was remarkably casual!

It is one beautiful scene. I have a question for you - when Yunlan's apartment is so filthy, how come his boots are so clean? They look like they've never touched a pavement!
This is not the first night he has spent by Kunlun's side. No way!

I love this scene! And these photos! Where are my smelling salts!!! Best Modern Shen Wei Outfit, A+++++. The deep blues, the very slim cut, the vest, the sleeve garters, THE CHAINNN. Hummina. I also really enjoy getting to stare at the slashes of light through the blinds onto Shen Wei, siiigh, so chiaroscuro and lovely--and, as you point out, the glow of light on sleeping Zhao Yunlan. Plus such an early appearance of Zhao Yunlan's 'AM BABEY' face! Polish up that look, dude, you'll deploy it some more later. :D

I love the Horror Fridge Reaction Shot so much, and you capped it perfectly. Plus now I will always think of this observation: It's so elegantly disdainful, and reminiscent of older times

I also love watching Hei Pao Shi tackling the dishes; he's inspirational. Only upon reading this post did I actually remember, that since Zhao Yunlan hasn't eaten anything lately, those dishes and their remaining contents must be getting pretty old! Dayyyys. D: Unless we think they're all from Da Qing, but I tend to doubt it--the cat using a plate just for himself seems a bit unlikely.

The cleaning in general is so nice to watch--the way he starts from the crucial center, the care and comfort of Zhao Yunlan (including washing the glass for the water for the pills), and then moves outward through Zhao Yunlan's clothes and things. The delicate folding, and even more, the smoothing, is so gentle and tactile--it always feels to me not just a feature of his innate tidiness and control, but also a vicarious way of gently touching Zhao Yunlan, after the tucking-in has ended (whether Shen Wei admits that to himself or not). He can't make Zhao Yunlan take care of himself, but he can make things nice for him.

Speaking of Zhao Yunlan taking care of himself, I'm not entirely sure why he doesn't take his medicine after Shen Wei gets him the water, when he had just started making a move to swallow them dry. Maybe the rolling away is a bit of a control tug-of-war, after he's had to cede pretty much everything else including his pride. And/or, he really has slipped into a doze, because he's being taken care of (which never happens!), so he's been able to relax and feel safe (see above re: never happens), which has eased the pain enough to let him sleep.

I like to think that back in Ancient Haixing, Shen Wei certainly sat up with and over his sleeping (sick? wounded?) Kunlun. He developed that love language somewhere, for it to appear fully-developed in next week's scene (not just hanging around the same apartment space, like waiting on the couch, but sitting RIGHT THERE, close and attentive), and back in their me-and-thee warrior days together would have been a perfect time to start it.

Honestly this was the scene where I went from 'kind of interested' to 'completely sold' because yes, this scene was like someone tailor made it just to my tastes. I rewatched it a few weeks ago, and was just struck by like... how good all of SW's microexpressions are. Both the fondness and the 'why are you like this?' and the 'What the fuck, seriously, why are you like this?' when he grabs the pill bottle

I deciphered the carton Shen Wei pulls out of the fridge: 味全紫米红豆牛奶 (Wèiquán zǐ mǐ hóng dòu niúnǎi) - Weiquan purple rice red bean milk. It's a real product. I found a picture of it on Douban.

Episode 8 is my favourite episode of the whole show for, well, basically all the stuff you just said about it. And the screencaps are all so pretty!

It's so elegantly disdainful, and reminiscent of older times: you can imagine him draping a sleeve of his ancient robe across the lower half of his face to shield himself from the horrors of Zhao Yunlan's fridge.

This cracked me up because that's EXACTLY the vibe and it's so very Shen Wei. He wouldn't stoop so low as to make an audible noise of disgust/horror, but his gestures sure as hell are going to make the point clear.

Why Are You Like This and Why Do I Love You

Yup. I love that that's kinda their dynamic with each other. Shen Wei is so fond of him already but he also looks at the disaster human thinking that, and then Zhao Yunlan grows so fond of Shen Wei but sees him, you know, literally slicing himself open for Zhao Yunlan's sake and has basically the same reaction (with more angst).

... will I ever be entirely over the ass chain? Current evidence suggests not.

I always think it's a mixture of this being the first time Shen Wei is confronted with Zhao Yunlan's dubious taking care of himself skills and he needs to digest that, and the fact that Shen Wei is much happier once Zhao Yunlan actually asks for help/pampering in general because it speaks to trust and their evolved relationship (and also gives those Service Dom urges official permission).

Do you think this is the first time Shen Wei stayed all night by Zhao Yunlan (Kunlun)'s side?

Canonically speaking, probably? But going with fandom's general assumption that Zhao Yunlan was Kunlun for longer than a day and a night to make any of this make sense, I can easily imagine bb!Shen Wei keeping watch over Kunlun's sleeping form in various circumstances (out on a trip? Need to watch for enemies; Kunlun got very minorly injured? Need to make sure he doesn't die during the night; we were up late talking in his tent and he fell asleep? Better move him to his furs and guard his dreams).

ooh, nice catch! Didn't Zhu Yilong advertise something or other for Weiquan? (or maybe it's just that ubiquitous in China, I have no idea).

no one else takes care of him like this. (And may never have taken care of him like this, at least not for a very long time.)
:( Oh dear, Zhao Yunlan. At least not since his mother was alive, maybe, yeah. I tend to bring Zhao Xinci into everything and I apologize, but even without getting into ZXC's failings as a father, his guiding principle seems to be "take care of yourself and don't lean on other people," as in not telling even his closest colleagues that he has heart trouble etc., and he seems to have passed that on to Zhao Yunlan in some form.
And it's not like Shen "我没事" Wei is good at letting people take care of him either. He and Zhao Yunlan really need each other, oh dear.

That's a great point, and I totally agree about Zhao Xinci's guiding principle. I can easily imagine Zhao Yunlan modeling that behavior whether he's aware of it or not.

And it's not like Shen "我没事" Wei is good at letting people take care of him either. He and Zhao Yunlan really need each other, oh dear.

I don't think it's possible to be over the ass chain, honestly. It's like being over...I dunno, chocolate? XD

Good point. And no one is telling me to get over chocolate, after all. We should afford the ass chain the same grace.

Bb!Shen Wei would be less assertive about it than later Shen Wei, but feel no less strongly about watching over Kunlun at night. And, you know, subtly ogling the fall of his hair, the way the beard frames his lips, the contrast of the rich blue of his robes and his skin...

With the standard disclaimer that I'm not a Chinese language expert... After a little sleuthing, it seems that Chinese uses a different character (浆, jiāng) for soy and rice (etc.) "milk".

Ah, I found another link on Taobao where it's being sold with another drink. Based on the info here and Google translate, it seems to be a multigrain drink made from milk powder plus other ingredients and it might be sweet because one of the top ingredients based on the product description is white sugar. Sorry that I'm nerding out over this, but I'm kind of fascinated by it. (I'm one of those people who likes to go to supermarkets in foreign countries and just wander the aisles and look at all the different stuff.)

it hits in such a vulnerable spot for ZYL to LET himself be taken care of, and later I think he's more ready to joke about it than he is now.

I hadn't thought about the contrast with the later scenes until you mentioned it in this post, and that's such a great observation! The later scenes underscore the trust and closeness between them, that Zhao Yunlan not only lets Shen Wei take care of him but jokes about it and plays into it a bit. Awww.

who else is there, his dad? Ha. We see how much ZYL doesn't want that when he's blind.

Oh, wow, yes, great point. Even if Zhao Xinci was prepared to caretake his son while blind, Zhao Yunlan really didn't seem to want him to - didn't even seem to want him around.
