Episode 32: what just happened?

I am a few episodes ahead of my reviews in my watching, and I am really confused. I just watched Episode 32, and I have no idea what happened at all.



Is it a dream within a within a dream? Did any of it happen? Is it Chu's dream or Guo's dream? Are they sharing a dream? Is Chu a cannibal for reals?

Please explain this episode to me like I'm five because it makes no sense to me.

Please no spoilers past 32!

My daughter is distraught over Chu being a possible cannibal, so I would appreciate spoilers about that. Is he really a cannibal?

No, he's not. His "I'm a cannibal" bit is so creepy I don't blame her for being distraught.

He *is* in novel!canon, not in drama!canon.

I believe this scene was one taken out by the censors when they pulled the series last summer.

Oh, interesting. The novel and the show seem to be quite different from each other.

It's super trippy, but Lao Chu shouldn't be a cannibal in tv canon. In novel canon, he's basically king of the zombies or something like that. Which is what the cannibalism is a callback to.

I came in prepared to help but I don't remember figuring what was real/fake during this whole storyline too, so I'm unfortunately no real help!

I watched this three times and still couldn't figure out what was real or not. Right now I'm in the middle of doing the subs for this arc and I'm taking detailed notes. I think I have it figured out now so if you're still confused, get back to me once you're past 33.
