Quick heads up for people: There's going to be a two parter Guardian Web movie that begins filming in May. As is typical of Chinese web movies made to capitalize on popular shows, it will have a different cast and has a 99% chance to be crap. BUT on the 1% chance it's a decent adaptation, I figure I'd bring the news here.

From the info available, it will be guzhuang (historical period piece) and everyone is around 20. And there's wuxia? There's mentions of martial arts at any rate. Full Poster

Part of me is screaming in delight, part of me is horrified, and part of me thinks it's best if I just pretend this isn't happening until it gets filmed (if it ever does). Best case scenario for me would be if it's kind of a prequel to the series or just so different that I can put it in a separate box.

Ooh, interesting! I'll take a shot at it at some point. If it truly is historical/wuxia, then they can show supernatural stuff happening, since it's before 1949, and it'll very likely be more novel-worldbuilding fantasy, which should make a bunch of people happy. Regardless, it'll definitely be a completely different thing to the drama.

I don’t read Chinese, but the text of the weibo (?) post mentions Zhu Yilong and Bai Yu? So is some of the cast repeating or is just an identification to connect it to the show?

Yeah, honestly my main worry is that they're all 20 years old, and there's a dearth of decent young actors at that age. But hopefully it brings something completely new to the table!

Yeah, BY and ZYL's chemistry and acting is definitely a huge part of Guardian's success that this movie is lacking. We'll see who they cast and how they do!

It's a shameless attempt at grabbing attention by using popular tags. It basically says "In 2018, you had the popular show Guardian with Bai Yu and Zhu Yilong. In 2019, you get these two movies."

I feel like the lead actors play such an integral role in my enjoyment of the series. And the only way any show without them will be salvageable is if I look at it as not being quite canon, like they're not being replaced in any way. So kinda like a tribute band, or an AU fanfic. *g*

It's impossible to make out much of the descriptions because of the image quality, but what I can see doesn't look promising...

My eyesight is terrible, so I have to admit I didn't actually read the text beyond glancing at some numbers. But yeah, a bunch of super young version of the characters + some OCs and a rando 70 year old is... well, they're certainly adding their own touch to it.

I'm just gonna wait for everyone else to watch and review it and then watch if it's good. But knowing me, I'm probably gonna go watch it for at least five minutes or fast forward it if it's bad anyway just to cry and wonder why I did that to myself.

Wuxia is one thing - there was a lot of fighting in the past, so. ;-) But they are all around 20...? (Okay, now I am thinking about ways to make this work with drama canon, but honestly, I bet it is just going to be another novel AU.)

I can't really decide how to feel about this right now! I need time.

I just remembered this and was wondering if there has been any news about it since this announcement. Have you heard anything?

Hmm, well, they said they'd start filming in the middle of May, and they're filming both movies in 30 days, so I'd think they're not even done filming yet. That said, I haven't heard anything about it and no one can predict how much of a delay there is between filming and production!
