Picspam/Quiz: Whose shoes? - answers
And here are the answers to the shoes quiz!
There were a lot of excellent guesses, and ultimately almost all characters and scenes were guessed in some fashion. The only one where no one came close to guessing the scene was 3f, the Ya Qing one, not very surprisingly given its lack of distinctive scene characteristics. Our winner issakana17, with an amazing 61 out of a possible 72 points - one point per image for identifying the character(s), and one for identifying the scene. Congrats! :D
1a) Most people recognised this! It's Li Qian encountering the Shadow Man on campus at night (episode 1).
There's actually a bit of a misdirect going on in the episode - we see this girl afraid at night, clearly being followed by something/someone, and next we hear, a girl has been murdered on campus! But this is not that girl; as we see later in a flashback, what actually happened after the camera cut away was not Li Qian being attacked, but instead Li Qian stumbling on the Shadow Man murdering Lu Ruomei. I think it's delightful that the Shadow Man mistaking Lu Ruomei for Li Qian (his actual target) is foreshadowed in this way!
1b) Most people recognised this one as well! It's Shen Wei being trapped with black energy by Zhu Jiu in the park at night (episode 4), where Zhu Jiu taunts him. This is the second time Zhu Jiu traps Shen Wei's foot - the first time is in the alley with fake!Zhang Danni, leading to Shen Wei getting arrested. (Many thanks to Zhu Jiu for getting us the delightful interrogation scene!)
2a) This one wasn't as easy! Some guessed Da Qing, but many recognised Guo Changcheng. Even so, since he's sitting on the SID sofa which is not exactly a rarity, the exact scene was a bit harder to pin down. It's when he's new at the SID, having just woken from fainting (episode 1)!
2b) This one stumped almost everyone! Guesses ranged from Cong Bo to Da Ji, but a great many people were just entirely "???". *g* Congrats toextrapenguin and salamandras for recognising Li Qian on the university roof, contemplating suicide (episode 2)! From the comments here, it seems the reason this was so hard was that people mistook the railings for windows. I didn't expect that, but in retrospect it makes a lot of sense.
There are two more pics from the same scene in this quiz, which I thought might jog people's memory. But the main reason why I didn't think this one would stump people so much is that the exact same pair of trainers is visible in 1a) above. *g*
2c) Everyone recognised this one! Zhao Yunlan has very distinctive boots (also seen very clearly and memorably when Shen Wei takes them off him in episode 8!), and the pipes on which he later slips are also distinctive. It's of course on the university roof, catching Li Qian as she's falling (episode 2).
2d) These shoes weren't so easy - I bet in isolation they'd have stumped people, too. But the contextual clues of the soap bubbles and rose leaves are strong, and many people recognised Sang Zan in the SID's library, dancing with Wang Zheng during the Reunion Festival (episode 21).
3a) I thought this might be more difficult, but almost everyone recognised this! It's Da Ji being murdered by her husband (episode 26) - the second time: the first time Zheng Daqian poisons her, but when she wakes up, he suffocates her and she ends up under the table like this.
3b) This one also turned out to be easy: it's young Zhu Hong teaching herself to walk in heels, in the Nightmare Master's dream (episode 31).
3c) The character was easy to guess here - Chu Shuzhi's boots are also pretty recognisable! (Though perhaps not quite as much so as Zhao Yunlan's, going by everyone's replies. *g*) The scene proved a bit difficult, which is probably to be expected from a character who's in so many scenes, walking on a not very distinctive surface. :p Here, he's walking by the riverside with Guo Changcheng, in the Nightmare Master's dream (episode 32).
3d) Basically everyone recognised this was Ye Zun! To make it a bit more difficult, there are actually two scenes with dramatic shots of his shoes as he enters a room. The first is at the university, but this is actually him entering the SID, pretending to be Shen Wei (episode 34).
(In the university scene, I don't think he's actually pretending to be Shen Wei, beyond the clothes - he's being super dramatic with his cane as he walks into a classroom. Though of course there's the deleted scene with Jiajia, in which he is pretending ... but that scene didn't happen, and Jiajia is alive and well, so we won't count it. :p)
3e) Toilet scenes are surprisingly common in Guardian, so it's no wonder people were a bit unsure which one this was! (If you need a refresher, I recommendamedia's hilarious vid Never Going to the Bathroom Again! :D) This one is Lin Jing in a toilet stall at the Inspectorate, waiting to secretly meet with Guo Changcheng (episode 36).
3f) Some people guessed the Black-Cloaked Envoy for this, from the swishy blackness, but it's a dress, not the Envoy's robes! The studs on the shoes give it away - though Shen Wei is not opposed to bling, his shoes are much more sedate. *g* This is Ya Qing - but even the people who recognised her weren't sure about the scene. I'm not surprised it proved hard to identify - there's nothing to tell which one it is, beyond it being dark, and Ya Qing is often seen at night. (The only reason I picked this particular shot was that it was the only pic of Ya Qing's feet that I could find. *g*) Here, she is about to accost Lin Jing (episode 36) - taking him captive, shortly before Ye Zun eats him in the end.
4a) The third appearance of this scene in this quiz! And everyone recognised it, too. This is Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei saving Li Qian from falling from the university rooftop (episode 2).
4b) This one was slightly more difficult - the face-stealing case got a few guesses as well - but it was still recognised by many. It's Zhang Ruonan being snatched by one of the rapists (episode 3).
(Anecdote time: during the rewatch, the shots of Zhang Ruonan's heels were when I realised for the first time just how common such shots were in Guardian, and I started paying attention from there.)
4c) Everyone recognised Shen Wei, and almost everyone identified the other character as Wang Yike too. I guess that's not a big surprise; Shen Wei's shoes are rather distinctive, and there are only two scenes I can recall of him dramatically confronting someone in this fashion - this one and the one at the hospital, and the setting here is clearly not the hospital. *g* So yep, this is Shen Wei stepping towards Wang Yike after her attack on him fails (episode 3).
4d) Another one everyone got! The identical shoes make it easy. It's of course Zhou Weiwei and Mirror Zhou Weiwei fighting in the bathroom (episode 5).
4e) Now this one was a bit harder! Zhao Yunlan's boots were recognisable enough to most, and so was the Dixing setting, but the other character proved much harder, which of course made the scene difficult to pin down. It's Zhao Yunlan and Wu Tian'en in Dixing, searching for the Dijun Register (episode 17)!
4f) Also pretty recognisable! It's Da Qing stepping on the Attendant's boot and discovering it's hard as steel (episode 23).
5a) This is a pretty iconic moment and a nice group shot! From left to right, it's Da Qing, Guo Changcheng, Chu Shuzhi and Zhu Hong at the hospital, about to attack Zhao Yunlan during the video game case (episode 24) - or, asautodach rightfully put it (in the order they’re named in the episode), Shota Boy, Coffin Face, Royal Lady, and Little White Rabbit!
5b) This one I thought might stump more people - I was surprised by how many people recognised the scene! It's a flashback - Hua Yuzhu being taken hostage, and Gu Ban arriving to rescue her and get himself shot (episode 29).
6a) The SID door is easy to recognise, and many guessed Lao-Li, but there were different guesses for the letter - it's the envelope pushed under the SID's door with the anonymous message for Wang Zheng (episode 8) that kicks off the Hanga arc.
(Special congrats tosolo for the only instance in this quiz where someone correctly identified a scene but not the character! The other way round was much more common, of course. *g*)
6b) The only shoeless pic! A number of people guessed Da Qing for this, but it's actually Zheng Yi. She's hypnotised Da Qing and made him take her to the SID to steal the Hallows. This is her at the SID, finding the wedding invitation (episode 12) and remembering Zhu Jiu telling her she'll find Tan Xiao at the wedding.
6c) The brown boots are of course very recognisable as Zhao Yunlan's (almost as much so as the beige ones!), and the scene proved much more recognisable than I expected - it's him at the hospital, finding Kong Jing's asthma inhaler (episode 25).
6d) This one proved surprisingly difficult, and not just because a lot of people didn't recognise whose robes those were. I thought the blue would give it away - it's the Regent. But there's another, much more iconic scene involving the Regent and a whip, namely the flashback where the Envoy frees Chu Shuzhi! This is not that, though; it's the Regent dropping the whip Ye Zun gave him, after deciding to free Shen Wei (episode 38).
grayswandir came closest to the answer, wondering if there was a whip in in the last few episodes with Ye Zun torturing Shen Wei. Yes, indeed, there is! Remember the dramatic shot of Shen Wei's blood-spattered glasses? Ye Zun uses a whip on Shen Wei there. Later he leaves for other business, and hands the whip to the Regent.
6e) I almost used the second image instead of the first - would you have recognised it? The camera gives away the character, of course, and most people recognised Cong Bo. The scene was more difficult, but many still guessed this was after the wedding, when Zhu Jiu and Zheng Yi confront Cong Bo and he drops his camera (episode 13).
6f) This is the one that surprised me the most! Several people thought this was Shen Wei in the corner at the Haixing Inspectorate, avoiding the cameras while searching with black energy. But it's not! Well, it is Shen Wei, but a completely different scene: in Zhao Yunlan's kitchen, dropping the knife after being caught cutting himself (episode 23). It's such an iconic scene, but it didn't prove nearly as recognisable as I might have thought, despite the flash of the knife falling. Once it hits the ground, the shoes go out of focus, which is why I chose this and not something easier. *g*
7a) Despite the fact that this is someone wearing brown boots and riding a red motorbike, it's not Zhao Yunlan - and no one was fooled either. *g* It's of course Ye Huo on his motorbike, after his first confrontation with the Envoy (episode 18).
7b) This also proved more recognisable than I thought! It's Zhao Xinci getting out of his car for the inspection at the SID (episode 15).
8a) Chu Shuzhi's clothes proved more recognisable than Zhu Jiu's boots, but plenty of people recognised Zhu Jiu kicking Chu Shuzhi during the fight before he kidnaps him, Guo Changcheng and Ye Huo to the subzero lab (episode 18).
8b) This one is such a delightful moment! Many recognised this as well - it's Shen Wei kicking Kong Jing away from a captive Zhao Yunlan (episode 25). (Lin Jing: "Professor Shen, Shen-daren, did you need to use so much force?" *g*)
9a) Zhao Yunlan's distinctive brown boots strike again, and the cane gives away the blindness arc. In particular, this is him just after stopping Shen Wei's confrontation with Ya Qing dead by calling him "Xiao-Wei" (episode 21). :D
9b) This one stumped a lot of people, and we got a lot of delightful guesses as to who Da Qing might be encountering: is it Zhao Yunlan? Guo Changcheng? Shen Wei? Nope - these are high boots; it's Sha Ya meeting Da Qing (episode 24), who's trying to wingman for Lin Jing. *g*
(Sha Ya: "Is this your cat?" - Lin Jing: "No, it's my boss ...'s cat.")
9c) These shoes turned out to be quite distinctive, but I didn't remember them at all until I made this picspam - and neither did many others. *g* It's Guo Changcheng having a nightmare of being strangled by Chu Shuzhi (episode 32).
9d) As ever, Zhao Yunlan's boots were easy enough to recognise, and so was the Dixing setting - but the actual scene gave people trouble; many guessed this was later in the drama when he's hiding the Guardian Lantern. Congrats tochina_shop for eventually guessing that it's him sneaking into Dixing to rescue Shen Wei and Guo Changcheng (episode 33) - this is the moment before he picks up the stone we see lying next to his boot, to throw it and distract a guard so he can steal his uniform.
9e) Iconic and easily recognisable! This is of course the Envoy arriving at the SID after being summoned by the incense (episode 2).
9f) Another easy one, from a scene repeatedly seen in snippets as flashbacks: Bai Suxia almost being run over by a taxi (episode 29).

Argh, I had a bad feeling about the Regent one, even though I'd just rewatched the Chu Shuzhi being tortured scene and felt sure it was in there. :( But I couldn't immediately picture where in the scene it was, which should've been a red flag that I was on the wrong path.
I wondered if 2b was Li Qian -- I remembered her enormous jeans cuffs! But I also thought the railing was a window and went down a completely wrong track thinking there must've been another random character with jeans cuffs whom I didn't remember.
Hmmm, I think I would've guessed Cong Bo even without the camera because he was the first Cdrama character I noticed who wore dress pants and shoes without socks... And I hated the shoe color. XD

Haha, yeah, I still notice it every time too. It looks terrible! I mean, I assume most of them are wearing those invisible socks that that sit so low in the shoe that you can't see them, but still. Close-toed shoes without visible socks look terrible to me. And bad enough with trainers; dress shoes are even worse! :p

My mental idea of Zheng Yi is all about the white tutu dress (her party dress?); I'd completely forgotten about her overalls(?).
I didn't get 9c) until I clicked through to the larger version and noticed the stones; should have clicked through for more of them. Doh! And also kicking myself for not reading the alt text. ;-p The "flash of something falling" is telling and might have jogged something, and the description of Wu Tian'en and Zhao Yunlan's feet -- which still look like identical trousers and black shoes to me (maybe my monitor's set too dark? oops!) -- is helpful, too. Check alll the available info, china! *facepalm* :D

Zheng Yi in the tutu is iconic! But here she's just wearing jeans and a long-sleeved shirt (sweatshirt?). There are other scenes where she wears the same outfit with a jeans jacket and white trainers. I guess she's not wearing shoes in this scene because she's coming straight from her hospital bed.

I was really worrying about giving too much away with the alt text, but I guess I needn't have worried - no one read it! :p
As for the Wu Tian'en and Zhao Yunlan pic - they seem pretty clear on my screen as brown boots and black shoes, Zhao Yunlan's instantly recognisable as identical to the brown ones we see in multiple other pics. If you can't distinguish them at all, yeah, checking your screen settings might be useful?

I think people read the flash of the knife falling as just a random spot of light! But yeah, I definitely expected it to be more recognisable than it was.

Oh man, I did totally think that was Da Qing. Oops. XD
This is not that, though; it's the Regent dropping the whip Ye Zun gave him, after deciding to free Shen Wei (episode 38).
Aha! I wondered if Ye Zun used a whip -- it makes sense with Shen Wei being covered in blood -- but somehow I couldn't actually remember a whip in that scene (I still don't!). It's just the only other place I could think of where the Regent was near someone who was being tortured. XD

This also proved more recognisable than I thought! It's Zhao Xinci getting out of his car for the inspection at the SID (episode 15).
This was the one scene where I actually remembered the dramatic showing-just-the-shoe shot and then the cut to Da Qing looking SHOCKED. XD
