Picspam/Quiz: Whose shoes?

During the rewatch, one thing I started noticing more and more was how many shots Guardian has of someone's shoes/feet - and not in a fetishy kind of way. *g* Sometimes it's for mystery's sake (who is this?), sometimes it's because there's something relevant happening at ground level, but very often it's simply a part of dramatically presenting a scene.

I wanted to do something with all of these shots, so I thought, why not ring in the new year with a quiz?

The challenge: identify who's being depicted, and which scene it is!
Hard mode: without looking at the comments first. :p

Sometimes it's easy to say who, but the characters appear so much, it's hard to say when. (Partial points for each!) Sometimes once you know who, you can immediately tell when. *g*

Without further ado (as usual, click for full size):

1. In the dark

1a)White trainers on pavement, in the dark 1b)Black shoes being held by black energy

2. White shoes

2a)White trainers and jeans; someone is sitting on a couch 2b)White trainers on a concrete block 2c)Whiteish boots on pipes 2d)white shoees, soap bubbles and rose leaves

3. Black shoes

3a)Black pointy women's shoes under a table 3b)A pair of strappy black shoes 3c)A pair of black boots walking 3d)Black shoes and white trousers on a wooden floor 3e)Black trainers in a toilet stall 3f)Black shoes with studs and a black dress or robe

4. Two people

4a)black shoes and whiteish boots, a pipe visible in front of them 4b)A pair of heels standing and a pair of green trainers in motion 4c)Black leather shoes stepping towards white trainers 4d)Two identical pairs of red-and-white slippers 4e)Black shoes and brown boots 4f)A white trainer stepping on a black boot

5. More than two people

5a)Two pairs of white trainers, a pair of black boots, and black-and-white women's shoes 5b)White strappy women's shoes, one pair of black shoes closeby and another arriving

6. With objects

6a)A black shoe and an envelope pushed under a door 6b)Bare feet and a card with a ribbon on the floor 6c)A brown boot and an inhaler 6d)Black shoes, blue robe, and a whip on the floor 6e)Brown shoes, and a camera on the ground 6f)Black shoes backed against brown wood; a flash of something falling

7. With vehicles

7a)Brown boots worn by someone on a motorbike 7b)Black shoes and brown trousers, someone getting out of a car

8. Kicking

8a)A brown boot kicking someone dressed in black 8b)A brown boot kicking someone's arm

9. Miscellaneous

9a)Brown boots, ripped jeans and a cane; the ground is covered in dead leaves 9b)High black boots and a black cat 9c)A pair of white and green trainers, dangling 9d)A pair of brown boots standing on straw 9e)the sole of a shoe, and robes 9f)White trainers with red and green, a white dress and a car in the background

I'll post the solution next weekend. Good luck, everyone! And happy new year! :)

Hah, I actually tried this quiz a few days ago, but decided against posting my answers because I looked at some of the other answers before hitting post and was then very embarrassed about some of the ones I hadn't recognized, and annoyed at myself for the ones where I'd thought "maybe???" but was too unsure to write it down, and then it turned out I was right. XD

As far as the five images you say nobody has guessed yet:

Thoughts, not necessarily guesses. XD

2b) I have absolutely no clue!

3f) My original guess was wrong, and I assume whoever guessed Ya Qing must be right. Given the low light, if it is Ya Qing, I'd maybe guess she's in the warehouse with Zhu Jiu?

6d) Based on the robes I feel pretty confident this is the Regent, but I can't figure out when it could be. I didn't think there was a scene with the whip on the floor in the flaschback to Chu Shuzhi's torture, but when someone else guessed it I assumed they had to be right, because I can't think when else there's a scene with the Regent and a whip. :/

3c) This was one of the ones I was super embarrassed about not guessing, because I have notes on Chu Shuzhi's whole outfit that I was just adding to and reviewing like a month ago, which included notes on those little straps on the backs of his boots! I was facepalming so much when I saw other people's guesses. XD I think not being able to see any part of his coat in the shot is what threw me off, but still, those boots are so distinctive, how did I miss it?! Anyway, my best guess about the scene is that he's approaching the courtyard where he meets with the Envoy.

9d) Aw man, I assumed the other guessers were right about it being Zhao Yunlan in the hiding-the-lantern bit. I had no good guesses myself, because the straw on the stairs just makes me think of the dream-sequence scene with Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng in Dixing, but it's obviously neither of them. I feel like it's got to be Zhao Yunlan, but I don't know where else in Dixing there's straw lying around! Maybe when Wu Tian'en is guiding him around?

My main takeaway from this quiz is that I'm really bad at recognizing people by their shoes even if I have recently paid special attention to their shoes and taken notes on them. XD And also WHY DOES NOBODY WEAR SOCKS, I expected only Guo Changcheng's feet to look like that!

Out of curiosity, what did you guess originally?

My original guess was like "Black robes so I guess it has to be the Envoy????" but I was very confused about the bling. XD Also now that I've seen other guesses I think the shoes are probably high-heeled with straps, but it's hard to tell in the dark, so I thought they were boots at first.

There's no whip in the last few episodes with Ye Zun torturing Shen Wei is there? (Not expecting confirmation, just pondering out loud where else there might be a whip...)

Very curious about what made you compile that!

Hah, not really anything in particular, I just try to take notes like that on any characters/settings I'm planning to write fic about, so if I end up needing to describe something, I can easily check whether or not there was a reference to it or image of it in canon. And then every time I do more canon review I end up adding a few more details to my notes. I wrote two Chu Shuzhi stories this last year, so I spent some time rewatching his scenes. :)

(For Guardian I have about 75 pages of notes on characters and places/objects/etc. and another 35 pages of episode summaries (and a separate shorter file that's just summaries of all Chu Shuzhi's scenes), plus another file with the scripts of all the episodes put together. Possibly this is part of why I think writing fanfic is hard and takes forever. XD)

now I think all of them must be wearing those no-show socks

Yeah, that's got to be it, but it still looks so strange to me! (Especially in 6e -- based on the shoe type, my first thought was Zhao Xinci, and then I was like "wait NO SOCKS what." At least Zhao Xinci does wear visible socks!)

You can see them when Shen Wei takes off his boots

Ah, good catch, I didn't notice that! As someone who always wears boots, that doesn't seem like it would be comfortable to me, but then I guess Zhao Yunlan makes a lot of choices I wouldn't make. XD

And also WHY DOES NOBODY WEAR SOCKS, I expected only Guo Changcheng's feet to look like that!

In Kdramas it seems pretty common not to wear socks partly because it's rude to wear shoes inside a private home, and it's less faff to put shoes on and take them off bare feet. But the private houses in Guardian don't have vestibules for shoe-removal, so idk if that applies in Haixing. /really random, feel free to ignore :-)

Having poked around the internet, I was completely wrong! Socks are definitely a thing. Just ignore me. /o\

Interesting, huh -- I wouldn't have thought it was any easier to take off shoes without socks! I've lived and/or stayed in a couple of places where taking off shoes in private homes was the cultural norm, but I think people still wore socks with closed-toed shoes. (Honestly, I was assuming the no-show socks thing was just a fashion I'm not into, but it's interesting to hear that in some cases it might be that they're really not wearing socks!)

...I'm amused that you have such a fitting icon for this post. XD

(You wear slippers inside, and some people wear socks in their slippers, too.)

Got it! That's how it was in Kazan (Russia) when I did a study abroad there. They always had guest slippers near the front door and everyone had to switch from outdoor shoes to indoor slippers. (I got reprimanded for walking around in just socks in my host's house... I hated the slippers because they were too big and it was hard to keep them on!)

Yeah, that sounds right! It really surprised me that Guardian characters wear their shoes inside (and in ZYL's case, in bed and on tables!), because I thought similar rules applied in China, but apparently it's not universal?

(Is Kazan an area where people sit on the floor to eat, and sleep on the floor -- or used to historically? I read somewhere that that leads to more care about keeping outdoor footwear out of the house.)

Yeah, I've been surprised by it in both mainland and Hong Kong movies/shows since I got into Cdramas, because I also expected everyone to take their shoes off indoors. (The place I lived where this was common was Hawaii, which I now assume must be primarily due to Japanese influence, but at the time I lived there, I thought taking off shoes indoors was common throughout Asia.)

Strangely enough, it's just the opposite! In general, the Russian view seems to be that the ground outdoors is disgusting, but also, indoor floors are only somewhat less disgusting, so you should still avoid touching them except with the bottoms of your (indoor) shoes. Definitely no sitting on the floor!

(If you sit on the floor, even indoors, you'll be scolded and, if female, told that you're making yourself sterile. XD I was warned about this before visiting, and then it literally happened to me when I was waiting in a university hallway with too few chairs and was like "surely nobody's actually going to yell at me for sitting here...")

I hesitate to make generalisations after being so wrong about Korea, but it might also be a Pacific Islanders thing. It's required to take your shoes off before entering a Māori meeting house, and I think that applies to homes as well. (Also, no sitting on tables! *eyes Da Qing and Zhao Yunlan, both*)

Ha! Do they have animals in the house? Because I tend to think of my floors as dirty, too, largely thanks to the cats.

Good point, that could definitely be an influence too. (We did actually have to take our shoes off in the classrooms at the elementary school I went to there. No idea if that's true in Japan!)

Do they have animals in the house?

I'm sure some people do, though not the places I visited! (As a fellow cat person I 100% get your point, though. XD)
