It doesn't make sense in real-world terms, but I think this is one of the places where you just have to suspend your disbelief and go along with the fake "science".

Yeah, at some point we have to just roll with it.


china_shop pointed out that neither the Snake guy Ya Qing (presumably) kills nor Da Ji change on dying, and if that were a clear sign that they're alive, surely the other Yashou would know?

But yeah, it happening with Dong Nan does imply that their animal side is their "real" self in some sense. I wonder if it's becaue she's younger, or if she makes a choice about it.


Hm, that introduces a contradiction to that theory, for sure.

The time between Xiao Guo going oh no she’s dead and her transforming is so small, it’s impossible to tell if changing forms was still her own doing. It didn’t read to me like it was – I can’t really back this up, though, it’s just how the scene felt to me.


I guess they must have been affected, or they'd have been around to help out - but I have no clear image of what that might look like for these two.

Do you think them not showing IS the personality change? Like, they became suddenly unwilling to help?
