The Fifth Annual Interdimensional Haixing-Dixing 520 Day Reverse Exchange
520 Day Reverse Exchange General Concept
As the name says, this is a reverse exchange, also known as a Choose Your Writer/Artist/Fanwork Creator exchange. Instead of making your request and that request being assigned to a writer/artist/fanwork creator, here:
- You sign up with the kinds of things you enjoy creating -- media, ships, tropes, etc.
- You choose three writers/artists/fanwork creators based on anonymised ads.
- You make a request of each of them based on what they enjoy creating and what you want to receive.
- You are assigned one request to create for, based on your offers.
- You receive a gift from one of the creators you chose.
The 520 Day Reverse Exchange covers the Guardian drama, the novel, and real person fanworks about the actors. You can offer and/or request fanfic, fanart, icons, vids, podfic, meta, a remix of an existing fanwork, or fanart for an existing fanwork. Or any combination of the above! If there are other media youβd like to offer, please discuss with the mods.
(Note that meta will need to be sufficiently transformative to meet AO3's rules, i.e. not a collection of canon facts.)
Hopefully this means you get an assignment that fits you like a glove, and just the gift fanwork you're looking for -- maybe even from one of your favourite authors, artists or creators!
Participants who are under 18 must request and offer works rated General or Teen And Up only.
STEP ONE: Sign up with your offers
To sign up, comment on the sign-up post with your completed offers form by 11:59pm UTC on Friday 24th March 2023. (What time is that for me?) You'll find a template (and guidelines to help you fill it out) in the post. You must say something relevant for each point; feel free to give as much info as you like.
Note: All comments to the sign-up post are screened so only mods (

Using our Dixing powers, mods will turn the sign-up forms into anonymous participant ads for you as a writer/artist/fanwork creator.
STEP TWO: Choose three writers/artists/fanwork creators
The anonymous participant ads will be posted on Saturday 25th March. Participants must choose 3 ads from the list to make requests for. (Please note that specific scenarios/prompts are optional for creators.)
Each ad will be removed from the list when 3 requests have been received for that writer/artist/fanwork creator, so be ready to jump in and claim yours!
All requests must be made by 11:59pm UTC on Friday 31st March. (What time is that for me?) Then the mods will assign one of your chosen writers/artists/creators to create your gift.
You'll receive your assignment by Wednesday 5th April at the latest.
STEP THREE: Fill your assignment
Minimum requirements:
- Fanfic and other written fanworks (meta, etc) -- at least 300 words
- Art (analogue) -- a sketch, not on lined paper, at least 500x500 pixels
- Art (digital) -- an edited/manipulated digital image, at least 500x500 pixels
- Vids -- at least 30 seconds long
- Icons -- at least 3 icons
- Podfic -- at least 3 minutes
Post your completed assignment to the AO3 collection by 13th May 2023. (What time is that for me?) The collection will go live on 520 Day (20th May 2023). There is no anonymous period.
Notes:
- All entries must be posted to AO3, so you'll need an AO3 account to participate. If you don't have an account yet, you can request one on AO3 or comment here to ask the mods for an invite.
- AO3 accounts can now be set not to allow gifts, and this is the default setting for new accounts. (Find the setting here: Profile > Set My Preferences > Collections, Challenges and Gifts > "Allow anyone to gift me works".) Since we hand-match assignments based on your requests, AO3 treats all 520 Day fanworks the same as ordinary non-exchange gifts. If your AO3 account is set not to allow gifts, and you don't want to change it, you're still welcome to participate: your creator will give your gift to the 520_Day_Reverse_Exchange account, and we'll email you the notification.
You may post your assignment elsewhere after 520 Day, but not before.
STEP FOUR: Enjoy your gift
Enjoy the gift your creator has made for you, and comment to say thank you.
Note: Thank-you comments are required - if you don't, you may not sign up for future rounds. If you are unable to comment on a gift, please discuss the situation with the mods.

I'm guessing you want to know about requests in particular, because those are the time-sentitive ones? We're aiming for around 8pm UTC on the 25th.
Offers will open tomorrow evening UTC, probably a bit earlier than 8pm UTC, but those aren't time-sensitive at all so long as you don't miss the week-long sign-up period entirely. *g*

Thank you! 8pm UTC is 4am for me which is a bit sad but I had a very favourable timezone last year so I shouldn't complainπ

(I was considering setting an alarm on requests day but 3am just seems worse than 4amπ)

And definitely don't set an alarm; it's not a definite opening time, anyway - it may well take us longer to get ready, depending on what crops up when we prepare things. It just won't be earlier, we can promise that much. *g*
(I'm more likely to meet 3am or 4am from the other side myself!)

Understood re posting! I might still get up early but it will probably be a more reasonable time of 6.00 or something... I was just thinking last night about last year and how quickly several of the posted offers received their three requests and vanished from the offers doc, and trying to figure out how to best manage my emotions about it ^^;;
(I've stayed up to 3 or 4am before but not since my university days! ^^;; I have gotten up at 4am much more recently for film work before, though, so it just seems a little less "middle of the night" than 3am :D :D :D )

(My current time zone is UTC+1; when we go to summer time, it'll be UTC+2.
True, you can never predict what will go quickly and what won't. Good luck getting the best offers for what you want!
(I regularly stay up until 4am if I don't have to work the next day, so it's much more an "evening" time for me than a "morning" one. *g*)

(I think I would often like to stay up later but in practice I have a 5.30am wake up 3 weekdays, and a 6.00, 6.30, 6.45 wake up on the other three so I only get to sleep in on Sunday!)

Oh god, that sounds like literal hell to me. I would not be functional at all if I had to get up that early, so kudos to you! *hugs*
(My mum, on the other hand, habitually gets up at 5 because she's just awake then and can't sleep any longer ...)

It's more of a challenge when my US-based friends wake up and start chatting just as I'm getting read for bed and I have to choose between social interaction and sleeping ;_;
