SID office propspam
A propspam (= props + picspam) devoted to the SID office. I love the look and faintly steampunk vibe of the place. There's a good mix of routine office stuff, like fax machines and printers, and more personal touches like figurines and little sculptures.
Lao Li's space is near the entrance of the SID, and there's an animal sculpture there:

It's on a table next to a set of carving tools:

Beyond the table is the wall of TVs/old monitors, which have been there since Zhao Yunlan was a child and Zhao Xinci worked in the SID:

Entering the main space, next to the double doors is this large, water tank-like or boiler-like object:

Iguana cage by the first staircase:

Wang Zheng has a globe and an hourglass on her desk:

And two telephones:

Beyond the phones you can see part of Zhu Hong's desk - the back of her computer and a miniature Big Ben clock tower:

There's a writing board:

The office incense burner, used to communicate with Dixing and/or Hei Pao Shi:

Wall lights:

On top of some cabinets is this arrangement of small (metal?) sculptures:

The projector that is often set up next to the large table:

Zhao Yunlan standing in the office's work-out area with exercise equipment:

Set of weights:

On the windowsill of the work-out area is a toy vehicle:

I have no idea what this is, but it's very large:

Same with this, though it looks like maybe a person could sit in it?

Another view:

Inside Zhao Yunlan's office is a practice putting green:

This picture is on his wall:

On the cabinet under the window is a sculpture and a ?magazine holder?:

Stuff on his desk (and a gramophone on the cabinet against the wall):

Inside one of the desktop drawers:

His desk lamp:

Next to the gramophone is this sculpture:

We don't get a very clear view of it, but it's visible from different angles in the background in a few scenes, and it looks the same or very similar to this sculpture in Shen Wei's apartment:

Entering the laboratory, there's a funky large ?cabinet? along one wall, with other stuff:

I don't know what this is, but it has a red light:

Lin Jing's desk in the lab:

Next to the desk are some books on a cart:

And sensitive equipment:

Chalkboard:

Examination table:

Large copper ?vat?:

I'm sure this stuff is all very scientific:

This is a free-standing board:

(No idea what the squares/rectangles are.)
There's an overhead projector and what looks like a pair of goggles:

And of course Lin Jing's popcorn machine and some lab coats for safety:

Going upstairs, there's a game table:

Giant clock:

Back of the clock:

Another free-standing board. This one seems to have slots with ?scrolls? in them:

Close-up of one of the library books:

By the upstairs lounge area with the sofa are some shelves with an assortment of objects:

Past the library is the area where old 'junk' (like the Lantern) was stored in cardboard boxes:

Inside the box was this, which is so random and is one of my favorite props:

Bonus - for Zhao Xinci's visit, they hung a poster on the pinboard:

I looked up the words I could see in Pleco:
责任 duty/responsibility
服从 obey
文明 civilization/courtesy/culture
制约 restrict
奉献 offer as a tribute/present with all respect
传承 impart and inherit
牺牲 sacrifice

提升修养 promote/elevate + accomplishment/mastery/self-cultivation
弘扬正气 carry forward/develop/enhance + healthy atmosphere/unyielding integrity/moral courage
Come discuss the SID space! Share your favorite details! Identify the objects I couldn't figure out. :D

Where is the putting green in ZYL's office? I don't remember seeing it at all! :O
Love that ZYL has an entire drawer of face masks and we never see him wearing one!! ^^;;
I wonder if Lao Li carved the lion(?) they pull out of the box :O
Thank you for a wonderful propspam! There are so many things in the SID that I'm just like ? ? ? about... maybe anything we can't identify is part of the machinery/system that powers the SID's dark energy shield!

After umpteen rewatchings, I only noticed the putting green recently. It's along the wall next to the door. In this screencap, it's along the right-hand edge:
(This may be an excuse to include this screencap because of the look on Zhao Yunlan's face. <3)
Love that ZYL has an entire drawer of face masks and we never see him wearing one!!
Thinking of ZYL's personal habits when he had a cold and was sneezing everywhere, I'm now wondering if the masks were put in the drawer by someone else! :D Or handed to him and he stuffed them in the drawer to be forgotten...

That would be cool! I like this idea. Maybe Lao Li wasn't happy with it and put it away in the box.

Oooo, that's a great idea! New headcanon accepted! :D

I have no idea what this is, but it's very large:
XD I've wondered about that thing as well! It's so prominent and looks so important, but we have no idea what it's there for!
Past the library is the area where old 'junk' (like the Lantern) was stored in cardboard boxes:
Oh no, I never noticed that the cardboard boxes have English on them. XDDD "Made in China." XDDD
We don't get a very clear view of it, but it's visible from different angles in the background in a few scenes, and it looks the same or very similar to this sculpture in Shen Wei's apartment:
I think I remember noticing one or two things in Shen Wei's office that looked really similar to things in his apartment, too. And I'm pretty sure the same painting was hung up in two different places at the university. Looking at this post, I'm surprised they needed to reuse any props, since it doesn't look like they had a shortage of them! They clearly put a lot of work into getting the eclectic steampunk aesthetic they wanted for the SID.
Thanks for looking up all the stuff on the poster. :D 牺牲/sacrifice there at the bottom (end?) seems... highly thematic, shall we say.

At least two of the figures look like owls to me, too. (Possibly wearing hats??) Another figure looks like a ?person? on an old-fashioned bicycle (the kind with one big wheel and one little wheel, which Google images is telling me is called a "penny-farthing").
It's so prominent and looks so important, but we have no idea what it's there for!

The "Made in China" caught my eye the first time, LOL. XDD

Yeah, there's more prop re-use than I expected! I didn't notice it until I started making screencaps for propspams. (I want to do a Professor Shen's office propspam sometime...) I think they wanted a lived-in look to these spaces, with lots of visual appeal.
They clearly put a lot of work into getting the eclectic steampunk aesthetic they wanted for the SID.
Yes! Even if we don't notice specific items in the background, we get the overall look and feel. As with so many aspects of this show, the more closely I look, the more impressed I am. They had a shoestring budget and didn't need to put every prop they could find in the SID. But they put the effort in to make the set look as interesting as possible. The SID space is an impressive set, with the stairs and upper level, etc. Imagining it without all these props, it would look stark and bare, and that doesn't feel like the right SID vibe. (Sleek, clean, and less cluttered works for the Haixing Inspectorate lab, though.)
It just occurred to me that by having lots of props, it somewhat disguises all the furniture they reused because everything looks different. At the same time, the reused furniture and the familiar props (even if we don't immediately notice they're the same) give a sense of continuity, that all of these spaces are in the same universe/time period/vicinity.
(I'm totally rambling! This is the kind of stuff I get nerdy about...)
牺牲/sacrifice there at the bottom (end?) seems... highly thematic, shall we say.
I thought the same thing. ;__;

Some of my favourite things are all the lights/lamps; they’re all unusual in some way, and all look great. The wall lights especially are SO steampunk, and I want them.
On the cabinet under the window is a sculpture and a ?magazine holder?:
Definitely looks like a magazine holder to me!
I never noticed it said "made in China" on the cardboard box!
Bonus - for Zhao Xinci's visit, they hung a poster on the pinboard:
Aw! Thank you for transcribing, that is fascinating! And yep, the sacrifice bit is definitely foreshadowing ...
My absolute favourite SID thing is the clock wall with its implications about weird time zones in Haixing (cap from episode 4, 2:46):
(Here's a more readable BTS pic.

I adore the wall of clocks! And the different times on them!

1. So many gorgeous little details!! LOVE!!!
2. I think we saw Lao-Li whittling one time? (He reminded me of Lester Freamon from The Wire, which is why I particularly noticed.)
3. Beyond the table is the wall of TVs/old monitors, which have been there since Zhao Yunlan was a child and Zhao Xinci worked in the SID:
Oh, is that where they are? (*facepalms about putting them in the wrong place in a fic* Never mind, maybe ZYL moved them there later on.)
4. Wang Zheng has a globe and an hourglass on her desk:
A regular earth globe, right? Ha!
5. The projector that is often set up next to the large table:
I was going to ask if we ever see them use it, but it looks like it's in use in that photo?
6. On the windowsill of the work-out area is a toy vehicle:
Is that a jeep? LOL.
7. PUTTING GREEN! OMG! I wonder if he ever ever uses it, or just got it for the executive office aesthetic. He doesn't seem like a golf person to me? (Or, oh, maybe Lin Jing got it for the lab, and Zhao Yunlan confiscated it for safety reasons?) (Now I'm imagining the various members of the team playing golf. Chu Shuzhi!!!!!)
8. Love the gramophone and all Zhao Yunlan's desk things. (I included the masks in one of my old polls, if you want to see how people voted back in the day.)
9. The giant clock is reminiscent of the one in Dixing.
10. I loooove the random stuff in the box with the Guardian Lantern (especially because in a previous fandom, they had a box with a significant thing, and the prop dept had put in no effort whatsoever to include anything else). <3 <3 <3
11. All the weird steampunky/electrical/power stuff being security-system-related => definite headcanon now. \o/!!

3. Zhao Yunlan totally could have moved them. :D
5. The only time we see it being used is in ep. 26 when Lin Jing is doing his presentation on "Why Da Ji is Suspicious" (before they know it's Da Ji).
7. Zhao Yunlan confiscating it from Lin Jing sounds very plausible. *g* From the position of the putter in the various scenes when the putting green is visible, it apparently gets used!
9. It definitely is, which is interesting.

Do we see the actual iguana in the 1st episode, as just another thing for Xiao Guo to panic over, or did I make that up? (If so, was it real, and if it was, where the hell did they get a live iguana?)
Agree that the various large mysterious things should be part of Lin Jing's dark energy shield etc.
(I love it that the magnifying glass? on Zhao Yunlan's death is enlarging Shen Wei's sleeve garter in the picture...)
The big cabinet thing against the wall actually looks almost like a big old-fashioned speaker to me. Another part of the dark-energy thing, giving out vibes/energy waves of some kind?
I wonder if the board with a grid is for crime-scene analysis of some kind, like those string grids archaeologists do?
Is it just me or does the diagram in the book have Hebrew letters in it? Kabbalah?
Look at the ABCD blocks on the upstairs shelves, do you think Wang Zheng used those to teach Sang Zan to read English (or whatever Haixing calls English, since they demonstrably have it)?
Anyway, this is a great post. Out of universe, I wonder if the props people just went around all the other drama sets and said "if you have any props you're not using...".

Zhao Yunlan does say in episode 20 that the SID shield is based on something like that!
"That's right, a Holy Tool. Faced with another dark energy magnetic field, its polarity forms a protective membrane. Our shield at the SID is also built on this theory. I'm putting my study into practice." (from Solo's subs)
So it could definitely be emitting some kind of energy field!
(unrelated: how much do I love that Zhao Yunlan actually knows how the SID shield works?? He's paid attention!! ahhh love him ♥)

Haha, sounds right! (I wish they'd done the same with costumes, for Dixing ...)

I like the idea that the board in the lab is used for crime scene analysis (or “strange occurrence scene analysis” as the case may be).
It would be interesting if the book image was Kabbalah. Hmmm!
Aw I like picturing Wang Zheng teaching Sang Zan the Haixing language that looks like English. It appears on quite a few book spines in the library (not shown in these screencaps, but in other scenes) so it would be useful for him.

When I finally noticed the putting green, my eyebrows raised as well!
I don't always obsess over sets & props, but one of the things that attracted me so strongly to Guardian was how great it looks. A lot of people only see the bad CG and think the show is ugly, but I never thought that. It's got a lot of rich visual elements in it that I love staring at. (Including the actors... XD)
