The portal spat him out in Haixing. As soon as he began to fall, he shifted into cat form, instinctively twisting into a foot-down position and relaxing, so he was able to land safely with just a mild smack of his chin against the ground and slight bruising to his toe pads. He sat down and licked his paws to soothe the sting while he looked around.

He was home, outside the SID. It was night—well, a slight shimmer at the horizon and the rolled-up newspapers on some of the doorsteps said about an hour till sunrise—and the city was quiet, with just the background hum of delivery vans. It smelled normal. The invasion must be over.
