Guardian Lantern-a love letter to Guardian
Me:Oh I'm just gonna write a few words to show my appreciation.
A few hours later: *writes a 500+ words letter*
Dear Guardian,
I’m writing this to tell you that if I have unrealistic expectations in love, it’s not Disney’s fault, it’s yours.
Thank you for giving me such real, multi-faceted characters.
Shen Wei who is beautiful on the inside and outside, intelligent,resilient despite the losses and the hardships the world throws at him; never succumbing, protective to a fault when needed. His biggest flaw, to me, was always shouldering his burdens alone, unable to rely on others just a little more.
Zhao Yunlan who is a leader with charisma, humour, a little unconventional but so readily accepting of people as they are. He is pushy to an uncomfortable extent and quite literally rushes in where trouble arises. He may have his faults but at the end of the day he cares deeply for the people close to him and genuinely wants the world to be a better place. Most of all, I love how he treats the women around him with respect.
Thank you for giving me such a pure,wholesome love story that literally transcends space and time.
Zhu Hong who has a top-notch fashion sense and showed me that sometimes you have to let go of someone you love for their happiness and that you can still love them without bitterness, fight for them, be a stronger person that you were yesterday because life must go on. When the time comes, you’ll find strength to lead too.
Guo Changcheng is a character I came to appreciate over time. Not everyone is brave from the get go but it doesn’t mean people can’t change. Guo Changcheng was always scared but when the time came he knew right from wrong and his role as a SID member. He faced his fears and tried to overcome them and maybe he’s a little bit wiser by the end but he’s still got a heart of gold.
Chu Shuzhi was the ‘strong one’ from the start and had a no-nonsense policy. It was honestly great to see him changing with the passage of time from a stony character to one who can let his guard down around his ‘brothers’. Is the development slow? Yes, and that’s okay. Everyone takes their own time.
Lin Jing was the comic relief, the tech guy in glasses who is also strong enough to carry Zhao Yunlan. I love how the typical weak/nerdy trope was surpassed in favour of a mix of quirky and cool character. He gave me a unique character, being one whose lines blurred between his duty to his professor and his work at SID where he felt more at home (could laze around while inventing things) and found people he considers his friends.
Da Qing was the cutest character looks-wise. I particularly loved his relationship with Zhao Yunlan, his fierce protectiveness and his unsaid claim on Zhao Yunlan’s sofa. :D
Wang Zhang and Sang Zan were more in the background but without them SID wouldn’t be complete. They thought love would eliminate hatred and boundaries and fought so hard for it even though it didn’t. I like that they were happier in death than in life and that was absolutely well-deserved after all they went through. Them choosing to die to give Zhao Yunlan a chance at escape just shows how Zhao Yunlan touched their lives too.
Zhao Xinci, a workaholic who made the greatest mistake of his life and doesn’t know or maybe, can’t bring himself to make things better with his son because of guilt or thinking ‘next time and next time’ but it was too late.
And last but not the least, thank you, Guardian, for letting me find this fandom who fuel my creativity and inspire me. People who give me the fix-it works, the happy and the sad, the funny, the AUs and RPF. You guys rock!
