Food headcanons
I'm a white Canadian in a big enough city that I get to sample different Chinese cuisines a few times a year, and know which grocer to hit up for good noodles, but that's about the extent of my expertise. So, a silly question for the crowd:
What's a good Chinese equivalent for a North American's stupid large, medium rare steak? Like, maybe a bit decadent, but also hearty and straightforward and ubiquitous, i.e. the kind of suggestion that would make a dude like Zhao Yunlan go, "Oh fuck yeah," after an intense workout and/or significant blood loss. *g*
Relatedly, but just for fun: What are your food headcanons for the rest of the cast?
Favourite fancy meal? Favourite comfort food? How about sensitivities and loathings? Can they prepare anything from scratch that would impress a date?

Canonically, Zhao Yunlan does seem to be very into fried street food for comfort/celebration? Not sure that qualifies as a Chinese steak equivalent, though!

Street food is important. That's fic fodder right there, eh? ZYL dragging his boyfriend on a treasure-hunting mission to prove street food wrapped in newspaper can be just as expertly, lovingly prepared as anything in Shen Wei's favourite gourmet restaurant.

So, like, Zhao Yunlan at the head of the table, explaining to the server, "Bring us a big damn fish! The biggest damn fish that you have is the fish that we want." Shen Wei is on board: the perfect juicy sear is an art form, and the condiments are house-made and innovative. Foodie Lin Jing is on the same wavelength as Shen Wei. It's a fusion restaurant: Zhu Hong gets her own gorgeous plate of sashimi. Lao Chu and Xiao Guo are excited to be here. Da Qing is ready to lose his mind. And Zhao Yunlan likes his fish, but most of his feels at this moment are that he has hunted and gathered for his family, and all is right with the world.

I think my most controversial food headcannon is that Zhao Yunlan can cook at least some basics, but he mostly chooses not to.
Also I headcannon that Zhao Yunlan particularly likes oranges because of that super sweet scene where Shen Wei cuts an orange for him.
Also based on the way he goes on about the stinky tofu I think Lin Jing is a bit of foodie -- at least when he's not so deep in science stuff that he doesn't have time to care.

I love all of these. I agree about ZYL's fundamental competence -- cooking well takes practice, but cooking adequately isn't rocket science. He can do it if he has to.
Foodie Lin Jing aaaaah! Now I want fic about him and Shen Wei having an unexpected bonding moment.
