Daqing's "vision"

troubadora's recent post about Daqing's timeline reminded me of a nagging question I have.


Toward the end of Ep. 12, Daqing is mind-controlled by Zheng Yi and gets the Dial and Awl for her, holding them in the process. The next time we see him is this scene:

The subtitles for Daqing's audio-only "vision" or flashback are:

a. woman's voice, "Didn't I tell you to be quiet?" & crying child. "You're always screaming and crying."
b. Man's voice over them, "If you keep this up I'll leave you behind."
c. loud noise, woman's voice & crying in background, man's voice: "You're a boy, if you keep up the noise, I'll really leave."

Do we ever see a full version of whatever Daqing is hearing or remembering? My rewatch is only up to Ep.24, so while I don't remember anything from later that doesn't mean a whole lot.

Do any of you recognize either the man's or woman's voice?

What the heck is this about? What is going on?

The only way I can tie this into the plot in any way is if the crying boy is a young Zhao Yunlan, the woman some auntie or other caretaker (?), the man his father. Or maybe the woman is his mother. Either way, Daqing would be his childhood cat.

I always figured this was a random scene that had no bearing on the plot, just a flashback to some of the trying times he had had during his years wandering from place to place looking for somewhere to belong. I don't think this links to ZYL, because "You're always screaming and crying" doesn't sound like him at all, even as a kid who'd just lost his mum. He only cried and caused a significant fuss a couple of times, iirc, and then resolved to become stronger from the experience so as to gain independence from his dad asap.

Kid's crying and woman's voice are not flashback, but are from the background scene (a woman in white with a kid hanging on to her, walking away down the street). The woman's words triggered his memory about something that ZYL (man's voice) once said to him (near the end of the 10kya storyline, when ZYL first gave him the bells?).

Yeah, I always thought that was going to mean something, too, and then it doesn't. I think at one point we're told that he's abandoned, and I guess that refers to Zhao Yunlan leaving in the past? IDK
