Yeah, that's the saddest part, and one of the reasons why I wish the GCC scenes were in the official version too - Shen Wei needs to be flooded with all the affection he can get, from all the directions, until he can finally see it. :D

It may indeed be a drama/fanon thing, now that I checked. I had the impression that they were close at least at the airport before Hanga, but now I see it's all just the students glomping onto Zhao Yunlan and his fun vibe, there's very little about them and Shen Wei (not just at the airport, later too). The only thing that comes close is "The students were all panicked and at a loss for what to do, having lost their pillar of support.", when Shen Wei is taken to the hospital. And there's also Shen Wei who "quietly reminded the students one by one to stay warm at night", but that's just him being his soft and kind self, it doesn't say anything about the students' POV. And everything else seems to be just regular student-professor interactions.
