Aha! Now I see the confusion!

Like, they open from the inside and the outside the exact same way, indefinitely, as long as no one locks them with a key. And then once someone locks them, you'll need a key, from the inside and from the outside.

You can lock ours with a key (from either side) in addition to just pulling it shut. But even when it's not locked with the key, you can't open it from the outside because there's no handle you can push/knob you can turn, so there's no way to retract the bolt other than with the key.
