Huh, now I look at it again, "keeping up appearances" feels like a strange phrase, when ZYL is simply asking if it's normal for Guo Changcheng's uncle to suddenly ask him to a meal. What appearances? (LOL, I'm so glad no one subjects my writing to this kind of microscopic examination!)
But anyway, maybe it's the difference between knowing when to approach people and when not to, versus being able to navigate the actual situations when he's in them?
