I mean, I think there's a continuum from consciously manipulative to completely unthinkingly natural, and to me it probably reads a bit more towards the former end than it does for you. But yeah, it's nowhere near in the same league as ZYL's flipping through his rolodex of tactics, trying them one after another, as per the nose-wiping scene. :-)
