Wikipedia seems to think smoking is very common in China and is seen as a sign of maturity, so that tracks. (I have no idea how reliable Wikipedia is on cultural matters, though.) (A bit off-topic, but there's a description of the proper etiquette for lighting someone else's cigarette there, too, which made me go, ha, of course there's a proper way to do that.)
