I think the fact that we don't see ZYL say it in YOHE is what makes me use it sparingly in fic. Like, it isn't just a casual endearment for him, you know? It's significant for both of them. So if he said it spontaneously, it would have to be an emotional response to something.
100% agreed on all of that! I actually don't like it when "Xiao-Wei" gets turned into a regular, everyday endearment - it loses its impact entirely, that way, and I prefer it to have impact every time! So, some emotional moment where ZYL blurts out "Xiao-Wei" without thinking, and then realises the connection - yep, this is coming together very nicely. :D
