Maybe Shen Wei thought the field trip would give him some time away from Zhao Yunlan, to regroup. But I think his students really would have been in trouble if they had gone ahead on their own. Yunlan seems pushy, but if Shen had really minded, he could have easily cut him off. I think Yunlan's acquisition of a "brother" is the natural result of his position, in a hierarchical society: he's bound to attract people wanting to curry favour, and claim they are good friends with him - especially officials stuck in little provincial towns, who might think he can put in a good word for them.
