I just finished The Earth is Online, about an alien civilization that turned the earth into a video game. It's basically a survival puzzle game with very slow-burn m/m romance between two intelligent teammates.

That does sound like it fits better than an existing RPG system! Haha, Zhao Yunlan obviously with the high charisma/social skills...
