Believe it or not, when I first saw this episode, I honestly thought that Team SID was going to win somehow with all its current members surviving. They'd been so clever and made so many smart strategic moves ...
*nodnod* I think that's understandable. The show is trying quite hard to steer us towards a sacrificial ending, but everyone's been in dangerous situations so many times before and escaped somehow. I think it's natural for us to cling consciously or subconsciously to optimism and a happy ending. ♥
And it was strangely reassuring that people didn't immediately die when Ye Zun consumed them.
Ha, that's a good point. Even people we've grieved for aren't all-the-way dead. (Lin Jing!)
Knowing what happens with Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan makes the episode seem so much darker and Ye Zun's attacks on SID people so inexorable. It also makes Xiao Guo's little victory stand out more in contrast.
Yes, agreed on both counts! That sense of attrition and loss feels much heavier when you know where it's going. And Changcheng's resistance is so epic and meaningful, once we see how really very nearly unstoppable Ye Zun is. *pets him forever*
But being able to talk about it during the rewatch and to discuss it with the peeps here helps to make it better!
