Xiao Guo is the main character in the novel's first chapter, too, and later never really retains that position. Not sure what to think about that, except that Chinese writing conventions are not what I've come to expect.
I actually thought it a nice touch that Zhao Yunlan says they have to suck up to power *for a specific reason*, because usually in Chinese media, sucking up to power is just the status quo and always expected, no further explanation necessary. (Also, novel!Zhao Yunlan is extremely good at playing that game, which is shown as one of his heroic qualities, so... *shrug*)
Also: yes. I did quit after the first half of the first episode the first time I tried watching it, so... that sums it up well. :D
