It honestly never occurred to me that this isn't real. It's a pretty terrible handling of Zhu Jiu, but I always took that as an indication that Shen Wei wasn't always handling all his Envoy business great, and had a learning curve. Earlier dialogue, IIRC, Other dialogue in this episode indicates that Zhu Jiu has been on Haixing for a long time, so I always took this to be a very 'young' Envoy who is more prone to mistakes, and maybe overcompensating uncertainty with additional strictness. That's also possible! Shen Wei's expression after Zhu Jiu tells them everything ... has many interpretations. I do think that Ye Zun at the very least nudged the emotions related to recalling the scene and thus skewed it a bit. (The whole bit about centipedes also sounds more like Ye Zun than Shen Wei to me.) However! Young Shen Wei, newly awakened in the modern era, maybe taking some dodgy advice from the Regent and screwing up everything by being too strict is a very valid take, and one I do share, even if I don't necessarily find this one to be an example of it.
He looks like he's impersonating a grown-up without being one... At 10 000 years old, he is veritable proof that one may or may not have to grow old, but one certainly doesn't have to grow up! *g*
LOL! Not quite... The SID is actually pretty ruthless with Zhu Jiu, where they dope him up "for a short while" so they can question him better, but aren't that concerned that he's not going to make it. I find that ruthlessness very... noteworthy. *g* I suppose it's partly due to them having been against him for 6 months, and him almost getting Guo Changcheng and Chu Shuzhi killed. And regardless of whether Haixing's prisoner protection laws are decent or crap, they don't apply to Dixingians. So they can mistreat Zhu Jiu as much as they like.
That's Minister Gao? I am really pretty sure? I mean, now you have made me doubt myself, but... I just looked at the screencaps I took and: probably? I just can't recognize him outside his office. *g*
A really lovely bit, IMO, is Zhao Yunlan poking Shen Wei for a private chat while the others are eating. Just the way he gets his attention and they have their own private conference is ❤️❤️❤️ IKR? And Shen Wei has an actual expression:
The comedy contrast of Ye Zun and Zhao Yunlan is absolutely golden. Indeed! Ye Zun is doing the Dixing Thing of being OTT dramatic, and Zhao Yunlan is ... being Zhao Yunlan. And talking and stalling to buy time for Shen Wei to turn up and deal with this problem Zhao Yunlan has no clue how to solve.
"Never underestimate us humans" is very interesting to me in light of the ending, too. It is, yes, though it would fit better if Ye Zun had actually been taken down by human ingenuity, rather than Shen Wei's self-sacrifice.
